  • The title should probably be Strolling to the Longmire Cabin at the Valles Caldera. We took a long time to get where we were going and then back to the ranger station. I don't think it takes the average person that long to hike this 2 mile, mostly flat ground walk. It took us a while since I had to stop every little while to take a picture. We did have a great time exploring the area though. We have lived in the area for 25 years and have never been to the Valles Caldera before. We will return! When traveling with your pets, please note, no dogs are allowed outside of your vehicle and dogs can not be left unattended. Not that you would want to leave a dog in your car.
    The Valles Caldera was formed about 1.25 million years ago. It is still considered to be an active volcano. There are several hot springs in the area to show that there is something brewing underground.
    You will find the Valles Caldera on highway 4 between Jemez Springs and Los Alamos, New Mexico. It is also really close to Bandelier National Monument which is another great place to visit.
    Back country driving is limited in the Valles Caldera. If you plan on taking a back country road trip in the Valles Caldera you will need to come during summer months and even then only 35 vehicles are allowed per day.
    There are so many things to do in this area, you could easily plan on spending a few days at the very least. There is camping available at several state and national parks in the area as well as lodging in Jemez Springs, New Mexico and Los Alamos. If you are hungry there are a couple of great places to eat in Jemez Springs. You can check out my videos of the Stage Stop Cafe, the Gilman Tunnels, Battleship Rock and coming soon Bandelier National Monument on my TH-cam Channel. Please be sure to subscribe to my channel to catch even more videos of things to do in the area and elsewhere. Thank you for watching, I appreciate your views.

    I have been in love with New Mexico far longer than the Longmire series. This is where he revealed that he is a rather wealthy man. FWIW - I would nave never left Victoria for any treasure hunt. she is the treasure

    My wife and I moved to Rio Rancho in Dec. and drove up there today. It was like 60° and sunny but about 3 feet of snow. When we ended the day in Santa Fe we stopped at El Callejon for a snack and a drink. When we were leaving I saw the Longmire pics on the wall when they visited. I liked that series but had no idea it was filmed in NM, or that I was about two miles from "Walts" cabin.

      I have lived in New Mexico for many years and never knew how close I was to this beautiful area. When we rounded the corner and I saw the place I had only admired though the pictures I had seen, my mouth dropped. For whatever reason, I had always thought this was way up north and really off the beaten path. I really should look at maps more often!

      It just shows you how close cool stuff is if you only go and look. We lived near many cool things in Arkansas but rarely traveled to see them because... we could always go see them some other time I guess. Moving was good because we tossed out 16 years of accumulated crap and inspired us to spend our weekend getting out and about. It doesn't hurt that NM is about as different from AR as possible. We have been having a blast so far.

      Oh yes! Minnesota is a lot too cold for my blood! It is cold here in the winter, but nowhere near as cold as Minnesota!

    Very special place that I hope remains low impact. ie They keep vehicles on main roads and minimize human impact.

      I think they will. They had told us that they really limit the number of vehicles allowed in the summer and only the rangers use vehicles to transport a few travelers in the winter. There was supposed to be a driver the day we were there, but they canceled the trip so we walked in. I think we got more out of the visit by walking anyway.

    what does the sign say?

      I bebelieve it was along the lines of no admittance. They don't want people in the cabin or on the porch.

    Why the annoying background music?

    • @ernestinaburke
      @ernestinaburke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simply because some people like it. I figure others could mute the sound.

    Did they let you go inside the cabin

      No, it was chained off at the porch. You can walk around the whole perimeter. Great views all around.
