KAANA SINGH
(1937, Gujjarkhan)
Poet, Short Fictioner, Memoirist
Kaana Singh’s main forte is her poetry written with a tinge of Pothohãri. Her known collections are: LohioN Pãras (1988) and Ud Kalãvey avãN (2006). She is equally good at prose. A TV film has been made based on her short story ‘Khushbu’ (Dir. Gurcharan Channi, 2005) taken from her to be published book Khushbu te Maria which was printed later in 2006. Rooh da Anuvãd (1999) and Chit-Cheta (2013) are books of memoirs. Her other publications include: Ukãb di Akkh (2006) interviews with her contemporary Punjabi writers and a travelogue Mohali to Moscow (2009). She has also published children’s stories.
Kaana Singh shares her pre-partition memories in Gujar Khan city. She tells about love of muslims and non-muslims in the city. She also recalls her schools days and classfellows.
Kaana Singh remembers a muslim police officer who saved sikh people from the violent mob.
It is worth-listening.

Great interaction. My dadaji, native of Sukho was Stn Master in 1947. He remained at duty 4 months after partition & moved to Ludhiana only after getting his transfer orders.

I would add one thing about the Sikh refugees from the Pothowar area who migrated to East Punjab. The local Jat Sikhs of East Punjab used to make fun of the Pothwari dialect and called these Pothowari Sikh refugees " Bhapa." This is a derogatory term that is still used in East Punjab.
In regards to the Muslims of Faridkot state. It is true that the Maharaja did not let Sikhs kill Muslims in the city and the surrounding areas, but the Muslim kafala from Faridkot was attacked near Muktsar, and many Muslims were killed during that attack.

@@mrart4276 All old history book mention Pothowar was a Ghakhar land. Sikh came after the last Ghakhar Sultan Magrib death 1765. Sick annex pothowar and persecuted native people of pothowar especially Ghakhar and Janjua. You can never find any sikh in village of Pothowar. Sikh was alien of these land.
