What's the tale of the desert rose that this song is based on? I've tried googling but I'm finding a bunch of different things from Cherokee women to a song by sting.

One of them is a native American tale that talks about the desert rose, the one called "selenites". It was carved by warriors who returned home from the spirit world. The roses were said to have been spread across the Earth to protect these spirits’ homeland. Similar stories were formed and survived by word of mouth throughout the world, proving that desert rose is indeed a quite imposing ancient symbol.
