  • While the build of our new Enksail Orion 49 sailboat progresses in the Netherlands, we make a 12-day voyage through the Greek Islands aboard a Jeanneau 54 monohull, enjoying some fast sailing in strong meltemi winds! Aboard are 6 guest crew members new to the techniques of Mediterranean mooring, going stern to the shore and rafting up with another sailboat. We go through all three of these techniques en route, sometimes in challenging conditions! The video includes helpful animations and illustrations as well as visits to remote islands and ancient Greek ruins.

    No diver needed for crossed Nichols in the med at all. If someone has laid over your anchor they just motor forward with their stern lines attached, to keep them off the quay. Then pay out chain so you can lift their chain. Attach a line to your bow cleat, drop it down the under their chain and back to cleat, lower your anchor so it swings free as Theo other boats chain is held in the loop of line off your bow cleat. Then simply let the line go to release the chain. The other boat then tightens their anchor chain again and all good. Quite easy really.
    After 8 years full time live aboard in the med we got very used to this, especially with all the charter boats in the summer dropping their anchors all over the place.
    Best wishes
    SV PAOMIA

    Great video. If you do end up lifting another boats chain, then get them to release more chain so that you are able to lift their chain out of the water. Secure a line to a bow cleat, pass under their chain and back to the clear, take up the slack and secure. Now lower your anchor until it’s clear of the other chain and the finish raising it. Now drop the line release the others chain and bring the line back on board. You are now clear and the other boat can now retention their anchor.

    Great video. Thanks. This refers to the Med mooring. In case the boxes are more tight, do not put the fenders down. When you enter the box your fenders and the ones from the neighbors boat get stuck and one has a big risk damaging the railing. Better prepare the fenders and leave them up. Go backwards carefully into the box and after the lines are fixed lower the fenders for extra security.

    That ‘last in, first out’ principle of pulling up the anchor in crowded med mooring places is definitely worth learning and remembering to implement. I loved getting to watch your Greek sailing highlights, and learning the history and current lifestyles around the islands. And I ❤ Tippi’s slip-on shoes she wore while womaning the windlass. Looking forward to more videos and sails with you both! Happy Holidays and Prosperous New Year.

    In german we call it „Ankersalat”, which means „Anchor-Salad”. In Greece it happens regularly. The best is for sure to avoid it by carefully decide, where to drop your anchor, like Paul and Sheryl showed very well. If it happens anyway, in most cases it is not a big thing, and you can clear it by yourself. If there is another anchor chain above yours, you will realise it, when your anchor comes out of the water, “grabbed” one or even more other anchor chains. Because it’s normally not possible to just pull it by hand, stopp your anchor above the waterline and take a line of approximately 3-5m of length, put a bowline to one end and put this end to a cleat. Go underneath the grabbed anchorchain(s), pull it tight and lay the other end to the same cleat, just as you normally use the cleat. As the other chains are now fixed, you can lift down your own anchor and free it from the other anchorchanin(s). When your anchor is free, you can completely pull it up, being careful to not grab the fixed chains again. The last thing is to release the line and drop other chains back to the water.

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We will make more in this format!
      We tied with two stern lines as shown in the video when we first backed up to the dock. Then we added a third from the starboard quarter across to a bollard on the port side of the quay to triangulate and hold us from swinging to the starboard side where the quay was angled.

    Now do this anchoring with a Trintella 4a .. that thing goes nose in first normally. But obviously backing up is going to be the way in Greek. Now that Trintella does not steer well backwards so that anchor must be down there and holding. Then the staircase needs to be lowered. 😂

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think your Trintella has a full keel with the rudder hung on that? It does make it a bit more difficult but having the anchor dropped well out gives you some control. Our first boat had that configuration and we found it was possible to control the release of the anchor to allow you to swing the bow around.

    I would like to see more how to videos dealing with the issue and consequences of not wearing a PDF while underway.

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Point taken. We are diligent about this on our own boat but since it is difficult to travel with our inflatable PFDs, no one was happy wearing the bulky keyhole PFDs provided by the charter company. We make this a personal decision and did practice man overboard drills with this very experienced crew.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Risk depends on conditions too: storm at night versus clear day, etc. For recreation like this, most people sail on clear days when the risks are somewhat lower and sailing more pleasant.

    • @LetsGoOutdoors
      @LetsGoOutdoors 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      After spending almost 20 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force, some of which involved search and rescue operations off the West Coast, I learned that a pleasant day out on the water can quickly become a matter of life and death due to a man-overboard or other issues. Wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) is a simple precaution, yet many TH-cam channels rarely demonstrate this safety measure. In my opinion, this sends an alarming message.@@LoanwordEggcorn
