    Highlights from the final of the women's modern pentathlon as Laura Asadauskaite (Lithuania) wins gold, with Samantha Murray (Great Britain) winning silver and Yane Marques (Brazil) claiming bronze at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
    The modern pentathlon was introduced by Baron de Coubertin at the Stockholm Games in 1912, comprising pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running. It was his belief that this event would test "a man's moral qualities as much as his physical resources and skills, producing thereby a complete athlete."
    From 1912 to 1980, the Olympic modern pentathlon was held over five days with one event per day. Now, the event is held over one day. Competitors score points in the first three events, which decide their starting position for the final combined event, composed of the shooting and running disciplines. The first one over the line wins the gold medal.

    The hardest part of pentathlon is being wealthy enough to train for five different sports. Access to horses, shooting range, swimming pool, fencing equipment and specialized coaching will ensure that finding the best and most well rounded athlete will never happen.

    We, Brazilians, are so proud of Yane Marques. She's so determined and strong and had almost no official financial incentive to keep her training routines. That didn't stop her, thou', and that's why she's a real hero. Let's hope next time around she gets gold. We believe she has what it takes!

    Being able to be competitive in five different events is extremely difficult and shows a true well rounded athlete. Maybe all of you hating pentathlons should try to ride a horse or fence. It's very difficult to be good at all five.

    • @hi8355
      @hi8355 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It’s not what you think it is, as an equestrian myself there are plenty disciplines like jumping, dressage, eventing and some western in my opinion it’s more athletic and harder than bicycling (I’m not saying biking isn’t hard or athletic). Plenty of people have been doing it for ages and a lot of people today are still involved in the horse world. It’s much more modern than you may think.
