I learnt alot from this lesson.
Thanks for explaining everything clearly and in detail.
Especially the part, when you spoke about how the pointer
of the file is deleted, but the file is still on the PC etc.
And the part about I.D.10.T errors.

Thanks for the vid. I accidentally deleted my whole downloads folder. I thought I'd just use system restore but my windows protection was disabled somehow. This really helped.

Okay, just to make absolutely sure, before I format my flash drive and therefore erase all the files, does this approach apply to removable USB flash drive?

For those who are asking if it is possible to run Recuva from a flash drive... Here's the first link I found on Google -> www.piriform.com/docs/recuva/advanced-usage/running-recuva-from-a-usb-drive
You can do what's explained in here on another computer if you really are concern about deleting this/these file(s) and run Recuva on a flash drive, BUT, as Eli said, he personally do not care about it. I mean, when you delete a file, if you have something like 20-50% or more free space on your hard drive, the chances that this deleted file will be overwrite is really really low. And even if you have 5-10% free space, the chances are, again, low, but more, hum, "real".
And, for those who are asking if it is possible to run Recuva to restore files deleted because of a system restore... I'll be honest : Yes. :)
Again, I did a Google search (Google's your friend, it will not bite you, I promise), and here's the first link I found -> answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-files/find-picturesvideos-after-accidental-system/0235ae2a-2655-458f-b883-955c50897903

Excuse me, do you know a particular file recovering software that can completely scan my hard drive for files I have deleted a long time ago well over a year ago and recover them for myself? Is it true just because you delete the files whether on your pc screen or recycle bin does not mean the file is completely gone? For example, would it be possible to recover my files I deleted in 2016 and 2017?

    hi mr Eli,
I have just seen you video about recovering files after deleting
but the problem I have not got anything back
and this problem has happened yesterday and I went straight away back to the bin and restored everything but I didn't get anything back
and I saw any recovering videos like yours and I downloaded the software and still nothing.
so now I am afraid that the folder I deleted is been overwritten ?????
so please can you tell me what to do ??
    thank you

@amraag2010 ...I think this works on 2003... Boot off the install CD... skip the first option to "Repair", you will then be given an option to install Windows or to Repair the current installation. Choose "Repair" from this screen... This worked from Windows NT though XP, I'm not sure when they stopped allowing it for servers... basically it just reinstalls all the important OS files. You have to redo all of your Windows Updates if it works, but otherwise your system should run like normal.

  • @elithecomputerguy
    @elithecomputerguy  12 ปีที่แล้ว

No... once they are over written they are gone... Unless you're NSA ... (I've heard they have the ability to recover data that has been overwritten up to 9 times, but it takes up to a year to do...)

  • @elithecomputerguy
    @elithecomputerguy  11 ปีที่แล้ว

If it's that important you can ship your drive off to a high end data recovery shop... they may be able to get the data back for you, but you'll be looking at a $2000+ bill...

Great Video Eli! However I had videos in one folder then when I wanted to add more videos and I accidentally put replace videos in the folder with the new ones. Because they had the same name they got replaced by the new ones, and I cant recovered them. I tried this method with recuva on the file but couldn't find them and instead just "recovered" the ones the I just added. Please help, would greatly appreciate it.

This will be hell for me to do. I accidentally deleted a server world for minecraft...which I guess I could easily find...if I hadden't already deleted previous versions before hand. I had a look through and recovered all that was in the folder, but the mishmash of files from other versions makes it impossible to organise and set apart...even though I have my world back, it is still lost forever. And here's me remembering backing it up but nope...no back up.

This is because you've written a new partition table and, most likely, overwritten some of the data. You can try Photorec or a program like Foremost that will look for the data based on the headers and footers of the file itself. It's a bit more advanced and you'll have to research how to use them, but they can sometimes turn a "hopeless" situation around.

So... if Recuva tells me that my files had been overwritten with another file (it actually tells me what file is occupying the space of the older one) they're gone forever right?? I mean, there's no chance or hope to get them back right?? I'm asking this because recuva did find the files I deleted by accident but they're shown with a red icon beside them and the status says Unrecoverable... gosh I'm screwed... I clicked Recover either way, and the files are back but when i try to open any of them (They're videos) neither Wmp or any other video program will make them work... I'd really appreciate if you could answer my question Eli, I'm desperate and I really need some help. Thank you for this video though!

I was deleating some shit and i deleated a document i wasn't supposed to delet. Now this was a few days ago so i relised this today. Now i've tried this program. I've tried plenty others. I've tried way to fucking many things. I've spent hours upon hours today trying to recover this fucking document but i just can't I ran this program letting it to a deep fucking scan. I did minor scans of everything that i could imagine. Even shit i knew that document wasn't in. And it's not there. Can someone sugest a way of recovering this file that actually works? Because i still haven't found anything that helped me recover the document. It was a wordpad document wich i deleted. I'm giving up.... They say recovering dead files are so easy. Oh ah... Yeah, well i've tried everything these so called experts tell me to do and NOTHING has helped me.

Got an error message "not a valid Win 32 application" Tried using "Open With/C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start"Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office", but that didn't work either. Also tried dragging the file into Outlook inbox but go an error message, "file too big". What to do?

Well here is a sad story for you.I had to travel home for a family emergency, while there I took pictures on my new Samsung Tablet did not save the pictures, but they were on the Tablet,so I am now heading home with Tablet got on the flight and was told nothing about the flight locking all electronic devices until after they did this.Got off the flight got home sat back to see my photos, turn on the Tablet all pictures GONE.I am devastated.I went to the place today I bought my Tablet from the Tec could not retrieve my photos and I am so freaking mad upset nothing I could do.So is it true that if you don't save photos and this happens can they be retrieved? Is to late now but I wish it could have been solved for me.Regards BrokenHearted.

I have a HDD that came out of a WD20000-H1NC-00 networked drive. The drive wouldn't show up on my network, so I took it out of the case and connected it to my computer using a SATA to USB external powered adapter. In Windows XP it shows the drive as a 668 MB CD Drive (healthy) - in Windows 7 it shows the complete drive as being unallocated. I am using the program on my XP machine cause it's a desktop and I can leave it running for a day if needed vs. my laptop. When I plug it directly into my desktop as a extra data drive, my desktop runs slow and freezes. I am trying to do a scan using AOMEI Partition Assistant Edition - the Partition Recovery Wizard. to see it is shows any data on the drive (I'm not sure what file/format the drive is in that was used by the NAS drive case). When I choose the drive and doing a full scan it's stuck on 0% scan process. It's a 1 TB drive (930.86 GB total actual space). Any suggestions on how I can get the files that are on this drive copied to a new drive without deleting anything? Thanks.

Hi, I don't know what I did to my computer some notice like the CRdrdll.files are missing. It would not let us use anything without this box opening up, no internet, no word, excel, any kind of programs. I lost everything, how can we bring them up, or is it late cause he did a total recover on it. Please help!

i fucked up.. i deleted a folder containing 98gb of data... i was supposed to be able to restore from recycle bin, but i completely forgot about the storage limit within the bin, so it just sent everything straight to hell... thanks for this tutorial! i successfully recovered 61gb of that, so not all was lost.. so really, thank you!
p.s. im not a computer noob, i know about system recovery functions within my system, but i dont have that enabled.... it wasnt enabled when i installed my OS and i didnt do it manually, as i have never needed to worry about that.. i partition my hard drive, so that even if my OS fails, i can reinstall it, and not lose anything important, i run regular virus scans using Nod32 on the partition that contains the data, so its normally all good.. i just made 1 error, while testing an anomaly :D

I was recovering 1 TB external drive, then I realize I should get another partition drive to save those recovery files and my local drives almost full. I think fristly we should get another empty drive with same size as the recovery drive or more.
(11:04) another thing we should consider is the amount of time for recovery, the 1 TB drive full recovery could cost almost 6 hours, so take your best time to start this task.

So, quick question, since deleting a file simply erases the pointer to its location, would a simple way to permanently clean a hard drive be to use a program such as crunch to generate a massive text file to overwrite any free space and then reformat? I have done this by accident by putting an extra 0 in the program :D

A note on that ID10T error you mentioned at the end, your generalized statement that none of the recovery software will recover files that aren't deleted is not entirely correct. For example, scalpel, which is very unrefined, does not take note of these pointers that still exist. I even took a few minutes to confirm this before posting. In response to everyone here who restored/repartitioned/reset, pick a recovery software and give it a shot.

  • @Killerzone33

I know you're very busy Eli, but a response would be Killer. Even from others would be kewl. I moved an external green drive from its case(bad) into my desk top and it shows as a numbered drive and unallocated in disk Mngt. I thought I would have to initialize it in order to access, which I'm guessing was a mistake, but I'm hoping it's one I can overcome and retreive my data.
Are external drives automatically encrypted and using my desk top would be useless?

I was having trouble getting important files off of a drive as it was asking me to format it. I ended up getting GetDataBack, and I thought it worked without thoroughly checking the files it recovered. It actually only recovered half the files.
Without checking files, I then took that drive and formatted it, and I then installed Ubuntu. I just now reformatted it again.
It was about 30gb of files, Ubuntu was only like 5. I have tried all software and none will find files other than Ubuntu files.

If you ran the program correctly you should get a list of documents it sound that can be recovered from the pendrive. Once the list comes up make sure to check all of the documents or the documents you want and make sure that the Recvura will recover the files on files which is on your computer not on the pendrive otherwise the recovered files might overwrite the location of files you had on your pendrive and then you wont be able to recover those files

If you are worried about installing it and over writing a document, just install it to a flash drive and run from there being you have the option to select which drive you are trying to scan for recovery

Also, I tried moving said drive into another enclousure and it's still giving the same results. What is the best approach / direction to head from here? I believe that it's about data recovery, but I have to access it first. Any help from anyone will be appreciated, thanks all, later, Killer...

I have tried to use recuva a few times but has never managed to recover anything. Are there any other free recovering tools. I use to use something called jpeg dump for recovering jpg from flash media. I cant find the tool on my computers and a Google search brought nothing but rubbish up.

    • @elithecomputerguy

You have to find a separate piece of software to fix the corruption... just Google "corrupted mov file"

Will Recuva allow you to recover deleted texts done on an Iphone? All I have is the hard drive that the Iphone was backed up to. The backups show up on the list of the Wise REcovery software but when I try to open them they are all gibberish. Help!

i tried to recover data from my SanDisk USB but couldn't. I have it on password lock too but removed the password so it can detect it. I can't get anything or didn't seem to be working. I just have an empty folder when I open the folder. I will try again.

I haven't done alot of deleted file recovery, but you should be able to point it at unallocated space as long as your machine recognizes it as a drive. If the one you're using does not, you may want to look into some others.

I knew it wasn't too hard to recovered deleted files in Windows (except for overwrites, shredding, reformating, repartitioning, etc.), but I was told it was not possible in a Linux environment ?

I think Eli did say an overwritten file CANNOT be retrieved PERIOD. It is gone forever from existence. Recuva only recovers files that have lost their pointers but still exist within the HDD
