    Hey John, a few years ago I came across a product call Mr. Grips. Amazon has a pack for about $6. We sell them at the Hardware store. Thin pieces of metal you can cut to size that have teeth on them. You can cut them down with utility scissors or small shears and slip them into holes and then insert the screw. Best fix I have found especially if you don't have time to wait. Never had one fail and customers love them. Thought I'd throw that out there. Great video as usual!

    Nice work on the carnival dart.
    When I was a kid I was given my Grandfathers osage orange or Bois D’ Arc long bow that was made by a craftsman he knew in Sturgis, MI.
    I became an avid archer. I and my friend Bobby would wander the woods hunting frogs, rabbits, squirrels, birds, and anything that appeared to be edible. That was the rule. We could hunt anything we were willing to eat.
    That meant we were often shooting at less than desirable backstops. Hitting a rock or catching a tree branch would break off the tip of the arrow of worst of all strip off the feathers.
    Arrows were expensive. I found that Otto's Sporting Goods was within walking distance of the house so I could go there and buy arrows and the various components that make up an arrow. Fletching was cheaper than a new arrow so I got good at gluing together arrow shafts and applying tips, fletching, and new nocks.
    I have had dart boards and darts but never made a wooden dart like this one. Looks like a fun project.
    I still have my Grandfathers bow. Also a 30 lb Bear Panda, a Wards 45 lb hunting recurve bow, and a couple compound bows.
    While I'm on forced downtime it would be nice to bring out the equipment and give it some TLC it hasn't had since Ryan was little and I showed him and his friend Dustin how to shoot.

    Hi, any time I encounter a problem like this(typically door hinges) I just use a plastic plug for concrete. They come in lots of sizes and just need to be tapped(with a hammer) into the hole. They "self centre" and it's a quick and easy fix. The first time I showed the use of plastic plugs in wood I was told "THEY'RE FOR CONCRETE!" Anyway, he took my advice and his front door was fixed. When there is a large hole in concrete I use two plugs, a large one to fill the hole then tap a smaller plug in to that one to fix to. I suppose the real point is to think outside of the box...I hate that expression. Great vids!

    Repairing stripped screw holes in in wood is something I have done many times.
    th-cam.com/video/XCdQbHs1mbQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=GYjMGeXVuOxwwzHE
    I have found that using dowels provides an end grain thread that creates a weaker thread due to cutting the grain of the wood into small sections over the length of the screw hole. I use a plug cutter to create a cross grain plug that in my opinion is stronger than the end grain repair.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Plug cutters are great, the important thing is many plug cutters are tapered slightly as hole fillers and might be shallow for certain applications. 😃👍

    Loving the dowel store John, makes me feel not so bad with my stockpile !
    My Dad used to have a tin of stuff he used for situations like this it was called Screw-fix, it was a white fibrous powder that you could wet and form to make a plug. He would often (in the field) just spit in his palm and tap some out to mix and apply, turns out it was Asbestos based, it's a miracle the old boy has lasted well into his Eighties ! 😬
    I'm still wondering whatever happened to my darts like those ! 🤔

  • @1lupus
    @1lupus 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    A lot of the time I just bung in a dowel, cut it and sand. Then just use the fixture to mark the holes again, either by using a template, or centering hinge punch set, or the transfer punch set, or my pica deep hole pencil. Really that may be just an excuse to break out the fancy tools! I look happy most times, but would rather be buying new tools. Hmmm do I need a Marxman Professional Marking tool with the pressurised fluro chalk gizmo?

    Great tip on dowelling. I think it would also be stronger than just puttying in the hole. The only thing I can add is that squeezing the dowel with plier jaws would put groves in the dowel which would serve to distribute the glue and also make it easier to insert the dowel. TTh

    Great video 👍 That was fantastic information and demonstration on doweling damaged screw holes 🕳 . I might have tried some saw 🪚 dust mixed with glue or Epoxy for the hole 🕳 but I am digging using the doweling method because you are repairing it with real wood 🪵 and I think that is a sort of a good fix for that damaged screw hole 🕳👍👍. Good information on how to properly get the center dead on to put your screw back in the same location where it was original at using the marks you used to indicate where the center was. Now I get why you left the marks on there when you 🪚 sawed the dowels off flush 😂👍👍👍. I think you did a great job on producing the right amount of stain on your Carnival 🎡 🎪 darts 🎯. I don’t think there was no way that stain could have been prevented in drawing up into those feathers 🪶, but I like the fix with the paint to kinda hide that stain, fantastic job👍.I think you hit the bullseye 🎯 on that one 😂👍! I did hear that trickling of water 💧 in the background of your video and first I thought maybe it was your washing machine or just hearing the rain came down in the background outside, but I forgot you said it was leaking in your electrical ⚡️panel again 😮😱. I hope they can fix that issue for you. Maybe they are thinking that the water 💧 will keep the electrical panel cool so it won’t overheat when you are using your appliances, yeah that it! 😂😂👍No , seriously I hope you can get it fixed soon. Well again great video and can’t wait to see what you do on Friday. Have a great Day! 😃👍👍

    Good demonstration. The only time I have used epoxy wood filler was on my oak desk chair. When I bought it there casters that dindn't fit and had wallowed out the holes so that there was not much left. It might have been better if I had routed out enough to put blocks of oak in but I went with pc woody. I think I tried another and it failed. These have held for 5 years with daily use. Still should have filled with new oak pieces.

    I have had to use the doweling method to repair holes after using a hollow drill bit to remove broken off cut nails in very old, dense oak. Once you drill beneath the depth of the nail, you can use a small screwdriver to break out the core (and nail).

    You have a LOT of dowel stock. I have a single lengths of a few diameters for making custom length dowels. I also have some packets of pre-cut dowels.
    If grain matching was important, I would cut a plug out of similar wood/grain. I like the idea of marking the hole centre before drilling.

    If you have ever watched SnakeMountainBoatworks, they have to fill many holes after releasing a wooden hull. They recommend filling the hole with Gorilla Glue and then stuff as many toothpicks that you can into the hole. You then trim off the cluster of toothpicks like you have done with the dowels. Marking the center prior to the “toothpicking” would be recommended if exact alignment is needed.

    If you are tightening a wood chair leg that was held together with dowels, and one dowel is broken in the hole, could you use a Car Dent Puller to yank out the remaining dowel? I say "Yes"!
    PS - Your stock of dowels is greater than Home Depot! Tip: I was reading the instructions on a tube of Shoe Goo, and it said to rub Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) on the tube threads before placing the cap back on, to keep the contents from drying out.

    Hi John, very nice dowel tutorial. Great advice to add the lines. The darts were interesting. I played around with archery and making my own arrows. Would be possible to strip off the feathers, refinish the dart body, then glue on some new fletching feathers. Then go into the fly fishing kit and hind some thread over the front of the feathers and make it into the band. Very cool how you covered to stain bleed. You always provide great explanations with you treasure trove of knowledge.

    I don’t think you have enough dowel stock in the basement rafters. One can never have enough. Aside from that, I remember years ago there was a hole repair repair kit that included a drill/reamer that matched the taper from a pencil sharpener so you put the dowel stock in the sharpener and drilled the hole with the tapered reamer. I thought that was a great concept. Do you remember that at all?

    Centering the hole when doweling repairs are made is definitely irrelevant! You just need to remove the damage. Which bit worked? I just bought a set of nice forstner bits but have not yet tried them. I did a bunch of dowel repairs using Cascophen glue. Pretty nasty stuff but the formaldahyde works good with the wood cellular structures.

    Hi John, good video. Im retired from ConEd and did repairs such as water leaks. My advice to you is to call and tell them you have a water leak in your end line box. It sounds like it's pouring out. You dont want your end line box to rot out from the water leak (otherwise, you will then need to repair/replace it out of your pocket). The service box/riser pipe and your end line box need to be repacked (oakum, duct seal, duct foam, or hydraulic cement). If I remember correctly, you had your service cable replaced (mention in an old video). Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the oil.😉👍🏻
