Stormfly: The Nexpo Of Geometry Dash. Nexpo is a commentator who goes over creepy and unnerving findings from the internet - this video has a really similar feel audio-wise and definitely got my attention. Amazing video tho - I'm surprised not more people know about Teamhax.
What a well-formed documentary! I had originally thought that this was a recent event, but not many interesting events related to hacking take place nowadays. Quite a lot has transpired during this very long hacking scandal. If I had to picture it, I would imagine Geometry Dash (and its servers) to be a large mechanical conglomerate, slowly being broken down and tortured over time. Despite this, it still works, but sustains some mechanical breakdown in many parts. The whole event was an exponential chain reaction - one thing led to two other things, which led to another four, eight, sixteen, and so on. As such, we cannot place the blame on any one person for all of this; even the root cause, while it may have led to a whole host of other things, really only holds responsibility for itself. Either way, there are some things that have transpired here here that are beyond our ability, as a community, to even get started with fixing. The damage has certainly been done, and now, we almost certainly will never see or hear from the thousands of lost levels, and tens of thousands of "Green user" comments. You were correct when you said that most of us had completely forgotten about this, Stormfly. I had even started to wonder why there was a distinct lack of "unregistered/green user" comments in any level, be it old, new, famous, or unknown. Hundreds of gigabytes of data are lost, never to be seen again. Though, if I were to be completely honest, perhaps this was for the better. Don't misunderstand; I certainly would have loved to (properly) view all of Roadbose's levels, rather than seeing remakes of them. The same goes for many, many other creators. However, if you think about it a little, I personally do not think we would want to see any of these now-deleted levels with so much curiosity if they had never been deleted in the first place. They say that one does not know the value of something until it has been lost, or is otherwise inaccessible. Maybe, if all this had never happened, we would not have the grand lore that Geometry Dash has today. Perhaps Stormfly would not have created previous documentaries on topics such as Roadbose's deleted levels. Perhaps the game would lose its element of mystery. Perhaps it would be a little more predictable and boring. So, in a way, in the end, (again, don't misunderstand me) I am a little apprehensive of wishing all this had never happened in the first place. Geometry Dash itself would be a very different place housing a community with a very different mindset than what we have today. Thank you for covering this topic, Stormfly. This was certainly a very interesting documentary. And the Geometry Dash lore continues to grow...
lmao the presentation of this video is so overly dramatic, and honestly i'm all here for it. like this is actually super fucking interesting! and i think it's really good that you recorded your voice for this because trying to follow everything with just on screen text would not have worked at all
TeamHax needs to be the most dictatorial organization in GD. No one should have access to any potentially damaging exploits without a year+ of experience as a trusted team member. If TeamHax is going to do white-hat hacking and create tools that help content creators like Mega Hack, that's great - and I wish RobTop would listen to them to get value from their discoveries - but they need to take responsibility for their own members and make sure that stuff like this cannot happen.
I found Zobros' password when the account password thing came out but he changed his password before anyone gets to login into his account. Really scary
yeah it’s really disturbing when you find someone’s password or believe that you’ve found someone’s password cause what if it gets in the wrong hands or something
This is DEFINITELY RobTop's fault, not "no one's". What he did is complete negligence, and TeamHax was trying their absolute best to warn his lazy ass. It baffles me that RobTop didn't immediately take action the moment he was being warned. Not only the topic itself was already serious on its own, he was being warned MULTIPLE F**KING TIMES - implying that this was not just an average amateur type of exploit/hacking. He was already EXTREMELY LUCKY enough that TeamHax was vigilant about the possible exploits, even going an extra mile and OFFERED HIM security improvements, instead of using what they discovered to abuse the game's already vulnerable and lackluster system, but what did he do? He didn't f**king listen! He f**king wasted a massive opportunity that was literally presenting itself in front of his face! What makes this negligence by RobTop so goddamned frustrating, and in my opinion, is the main person to be blamed, is that most, if not the entire hacking scandal could have been avoided if he just used some extra brain cells to listen to TeamHax. I'm not saying that the ones who initiated the server attack were innocent and not to be blamed. They were complete assholes and 100% responsible for the attack, but they were avoidable, if RobTop just listened. I don't care if RobTop eventually fixed the problem, the damage was already done, and unfortunately for us, the damage was PERMANENT, all because of his negligence towards people who genuinely wanted to help him.
i'm a former admin of the forum and i coincidentally stepped down just before this all happened. kinda wish i waited a little just so i got to witness it all by myself. great video
Damn. I played GD during 2016 and when Anaban hacked Bloodbath, I was in pure shock. Also, about TeamHax, I never knew anything about them, Pizzaroot’s stream and TheHaxor27’s stream and I thought the game was entirely safe at the time. I also never even questioned the “-“ or the unnamed green users and thought that they could’ve lost their save data over time. When I realized the green accounts were hacked is insane to think of. The hacking of these green accounts destroyed most of the Geometry Dash 2013-2015 community. If all of these green accounts were never hacked, many discoveries could’ve been made about old creators, old teams and old levels. Also about TeamN2’s leave, I was actually wondering the real truth about the team leaving the game.
Wow, i remember around december of 2016 I watched Partition Zion's video about Anaban that shows the bb update and viprin and michigun's name changed to "i hate you all" and "i dont rly care". Fortunately i was only playing on gdw at that time :P. This vid brings back so much memories. Thank you stormfly!
this video is probably the best explanation of any part of GD history I've ever seen, looking forward to more of these (though idk if there are any more interesting events regarding GD)
I'm really impressed by the amount of effort you put into this video. I've joined the GD community around a year ago and I didn't know too much about all those hacking incidents, only that they happened. Thanks to you, now I know much more about them. In my opinion you're doing a great job in this community, making documentaries about its past. Much love and stay safe ❤️
Honestly I can see why 2.2 is taking so damn long now. Robtop really had to put up with a lot on top of making the update. I hope everything goes well for him and the game...
I was never aware of this simply because I wasn't as active in GD in 2017. I heard about this hacking from SEA's video listing every drama in 2.1 and mentioning that it's the reason TeamN2 disbanded. Just hearing about this gave me goosebumps... I would've never thought the reason behind the blank green usernames and the cause of a team disbandment would be because of something so devastatingly scary. Outstanding video. I absolutely love videos like this where it goes deep into depth with events like these. :D
a very well done documentary. definitely shed more light on the situation. thanks! and also thank you for not putting in any generic Newgrounds music✨✨
In many years I've been playing this game, I only discovered this events now. Thinking about so much happening behind the curtains while I was normally having fun playing, feels creepy
I really wish Robtop was more open to working with other developers or programmers. On some level I can understand his reasoning to not want to, but when you see things like this happen, it just seems ridiculous not to.
i am still so incredibly proud of you lmao. if you want some feedback, your voice could be a bit less quiet, and you could maybe talk just a tiny bit faster. it's still a great video though!
I never realised that - for green users were because of hacking. I originally thought that all featured lvls by a green user were made the green user called a - and green users can no longer get rated. Thanks for letting me know Stormfly! :)
Damn, that sucks. Also, what was the name of the account, the amount of account comments and the amount of levels the account had before the account was hacked?
this explains why i have seen so many green dash names in the last recent years.. this happening under the majority's radar really makes up for my unknowledge for the community news yet scares me how.. how *this is how teamn2 actually left for..* i didn't have good devices to play their levels yet i enjoyed them being here as they were the 1st team i ever heard of and expected good stuff from good job stormfly and i hope u can make more videos like this as this is just pure gold for the community
The "roadbose deleted levels" part hit hard because as a 1.1 or 1.2 player, it's very possible that I played these levels all these years ago. And to think that people won't have the chance to do that ever again is scary. Whoever or whatever got these levels deleted gave preservation the middle finger.
Almost all of this in near-full detail was told to me by an irl friend a few years ago, pretty sure it was right after the Anaban leaderboard hacking. Now I'm wondering how he knew all this as it wasn't common knowledge (ex. reason behind TeamHax's creation, claims to have a link to an affiliate discord, who was behind the leaderboard hackings, how Anaban was linked to TeamHax, etc.). I can give more info if needed, but you covered basically everything I know.
Can I just say your voice is perfect for narrating more serious content like this. It's so ominous and dramatic, and anxiety-inducing. (that last one is probably just me tho)
Thank you so much, I made a gd iceberg and I'm making the video, I'm going over the team hax entry and stormy is like the only one who made a video, these timestamps help a lot
When SEA stopped making GD videos, I stopped watching him. However, I started watching him again not just because of my mild interest in astronomy, but because his voice is so nice to listen to. I feel that, if you stopped making GD videos, i would still probably watch this channel for the same reason. TL;DR: nice voice
Most people blame robtop for the games bad security, which is quite understandable, but if you look at it from his perspective, the game he had worked on for so long, devoted so much time and effort into, was basically rotting from the inside out. We also dont know what was going on with his personal life, whether he was struggling with some sort of loss, whether he was depressed or whether he was losing motivation, which is why it's quite annoying to hear people say "Robtop doesnt care about the game anymore"
fun fact: on february 28th i actually logged into michigun's account, i got mod; sent viking arena v2 and the level was featured Lol i also uploaded a level that was shortly deleted and made desert temple a free demon, i was a right dickhead i know- i changed for the better a year later
according to flaaroni, it is chayleaf (pavlukivan) who was responsible for this massive event. not sure about the validity, but if true, this is insane
wanted to clarify something (idk if you knew this or not) skrillex party by nether was deleted way before in 2.0, anaban (iirc) hacked that level making it free, changing its name to "anaban is back ;)" and sometime later it was deleted
Damn I remember this one, there was a smaller server hacking mess back in October 2016 aswell but I'm pretty sure that was all down to anaban, good video!

And the Geometry Dash lore continues to grow...

lol your pfp goes well with your name
man just wrote a whole essay
I find it weird how Anaban had a bigger influence on the community than TeamHax.
Same
lmao the presentation of this video is so overly dramatic, and honestly i'm all here for it. like this is actually super fucking interesting! and i think it's really good that you recorded your voice for this because trying to follow everything with just on screen text would not have worked at all
TeamHax needs to be the most dictatorial organization in GD.
True.
Cvolton discovered the exploit that made this worse
I found Zobros' password when the account password thing came out but he changed his password before anyone gets to login into his account. Really scary
yeah it’s really disturbing when you find someone’s password or believe that you’ve found someone’s password cause what if it gets in the wrong hands or something
@@joechristo2 yup robtop should really work on antihack systems

Duuuuude, that was one of my favourite demons...
idk how i missed this video but this awesome. Super interesting to see a real hacking scandal that objectively changed the game.
Robtop was even a victim of this
RobTop try not to be braindead challenge
honestly rob deserved this, after blatantly ignoring absolute's recommendations. rob just didn't care about what absolute said, and it backfired
i mean the damage wasnt really permanent like we dont really care today it was bad back then tho
i'm a former admin of the forum and i coincidentally stepped down just before this all happened. kinda wish i waited a little just so i got to witness it all by myself. great video
Wtf just realized I joined this community just a few days after this hacking situation
14:18 i legit thought there was about to be a commercial break lol
i wonder if this is still the biggest hacking scandal
it is trust me
Compared to anaban, yeah
You remind me of Sea1997, I miss these types of documentaries so well done!
The thought of my password still being out there haunts me a little... thank god I just changed it! Awesome video!
thank you so much for doing a voiceover yes!
When the song stopped at the end and after that you said "...will ever" literally chill down my spine
really great documentary, i briefly remember this happening back then but didnt know it went to this extent
This guy explains this hacking scandal like its a creepy pasta lol
In many years I've been playing this game, I only discovered this events now. Thinking about so much happening behind the curtains while I was normally having fun playing, feels creepy
I really wish Robtop was more open to working with other developers or programmers. On some level I can understand his reasoning to not want to, but when you see things like this happen, it just seems ridiculous not to.
@Gabriel Howell XD
Especially for back-end stuff
Wow, really well-made video. While watching this I remembered a lot of hacking scandals during 2017. Man, time flies...
i am still so incredibly proud of you lmao. if you want some feedback, your voice could be a bit less quiet, and you could maybe talk just a tiny bit faster. it's still a great video though!
I never realised that - for green users were because of hacking. I originally thought that all featured lvls by a green user were made the green user called a - and green users can no longer get rated. Thanks for letting me know Stormfly! :)
18:57 that one at the very bottom was my comment. I remember it because it was my first time commenting :(
Damn, that sucks. Also, what was the name of the account, the amount of account comments and the amount of levels the account had before the account was hacked?
this explains why i have seen so many green dash names in the last recent years..
this happening under the majority's radar really makes up for my unknowledge for the community news yet scares me how.. how *this is how teamn2 actually left for..* i didn't have good devices to play their levels yet i enjoyed them being here as they were the 1st team i ever heard of and expected good stuff from
good job stormfly and i hope u can make more videos like this as this is just pure gold for the community
_”This is what happens when RobTop doesn’t listen”_
_-A wise man_
why do i feel like i'm about to get jumpscared
I feel like my account has been deleted while watching this video lol
Nice video btw I can tell you put a lot of work into it
Can I just say your voice is perfect for narrating more serious content like this. It's so ominous and dramatic, and anxiety-inducing. (that last one is probably just me tho)
0:00 Intro
3:30 The Origin of TeamHax
7:28 What caused the hacking scandal?
14:25 The Timeline of Damages
Thank you so much, I made a gd iceberg and I'm making the video, I'm going over the team hax entry and stormy is like the only one who made a video, these timestamps help a lot
I haven't heard your voice until now, it sounds good!
Its 11pm and the background music scared the shit out of me lol.
But otherwise awesome video!
Ironically enough I joined Geometry Dash as an unregistered user on February 27, 2017, but I guess I got lucky.
i'd 100% blame robtop for this
i would but hopefully he takes the game more seriously.... lets hope 😔
After watching this, I have realized that I missed this whole event by a few months...
Also, why would people do things like that?
Good video! You explained everything in this video very well and fluently. I recommend you make more videos like this in the near future.
I hate how people think spaceuk did more damage than this incident
🤓

@@イエスサーBRYou are incredible. You typed an ENTIRE nerd emoji. So much effort.
@@AverageCommenterOnYT my bad I thought it was funny didn't quite remember this one, shame on me
When SEA stopped making GD videos, I stopped watching him. However, I started watching him again not just because of my mild interest in astronomy, but because his voice is so nice to listen to. I feel that, if you stopped making GD videos, i would still probably watch this channel for the same reason.
TL;DR: nice voice
Robtop should rewrite the servers in something like Node.js or even plain C++ which makes it easier to control everything.
Was it written on Java?
@@lukethekuya No, with PHP and SQL
@@iliashdz9106 Owww...
Did not know Python may have server safety problems...
Probably because of how easy it is to use.
@@lukethekuya ik its like 2 years late but php doesn't mean phyton, and php is more secure nowadays but you still have to know what you're doing
@@GDNachoo Ah okies!
honestly anaban’s message was inspiring and i like that :)
some criticism, I think the audio was too quiet, I turned up the audio to hear the video clearly then got jump scared by ads
Most people blame robtop for the games bad security, which is quite understandable, but if you look at it from his perspective, the game he had worked on for so long, devoted so much time and effort into, was basically rotting from the inside out.
We also dont know what was going on with his personal life, whether he was struggling with some sort of loss, whether he was depressed or whether he was losing motivation, which is why it's quite annoying to hear people say
"Robtop doesnt care about the game anymore"
fun fact: on february 28th i actually logged into michigun's account, i got mod; sent viking arena v2 and the level was featured Lol
i also uploaded a level that was shortly deleted and made desert temple a free demon, i was a right dickhead i know- i changed for the better a year later
😊
according to flaaroni, it is chayleaf (pavlukivan) who was responsible for this massive event. not sure about the validity, but if true, this is insane
yep, i saw that screenshot and the tweet
insane how there are so many historical studies can be learnt in GD even with some datas being deleted by this scandal.
tbh stormy has the perfect voice for a documentary
wanted to clarify something (idk if you knew this or not)
skrillex party by nether was deleted way before in 2.0, anaban (iirc) hacked that level making it free, changing its name to "anaban is back ;)" and sometime later it was deleted
oh wow this brings back memories
These video’s are super interesting because this makes people know so much more about the history of geometry dash, keep it up
Damn I remember this one, there was a smaller server hacking mess back in October 2016 aswell but I'm pretty sure that was all down to anaban, good video!
