    I'm loving listening to the stuff about music hall. For a couple of years I used to work at The Players on Villiars St and a chap called Johnny Rutland used to do a turn as a ghost in an old Victorian night gown with the gradually extending arms and we used to pull him back and forth to the wings on a truck with visible ropes. What was amazing was his ability with an audience and just how funny and effortlessly accomplished he was. He'd been a jobbing comedy turn before vinyl came along and the artist was the recording. And the point Stuart makes about the middle eight totally resonates.

    • @zaygezunt
      @zaygezunt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is so rare now to hear about the Music Hall, let alone from people who clearly admire the artists and the era. So many great stories, if only people knew

    • @royloveday4350
      @royloveday4350 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@zaygezunt I'm only in my 40's but through my work at the Players in my 20s I met one or two originals. Johnny Rutland was a standout who never retired as far as I know. Some of the artists had been part of the televised music hall that used to come out of Leeds Variety so you experienced a flavour of something genuine from the artists. My understanding is that of a layperson who worked behind the scenes but there seems to be something very kindred between the music hall and the early days of "alternative comedy", something cut throat, insane and even avant garde much Alexi and Stuart were saying. I cant really pretend to remember it so much as I was a cog in a curated piece of nostalgia.

    • @zaygezunt
      @zaygezunt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@royloveday4350 I'm not much older than you and I got into it through my mother (God bless her) who used to talk about her dad's favourite music hall acts. That got me reading more and I joined the British Music Hall Society - they're a lovely group of people!

    Great podcast, thanks to both of you and all the crew. I love my radio and podcasts.
    I am most interested in your comments about the Beeb.
    I hear a lot of people totally diss the Beeb, and yet I still find all kinds of good stuff. I love the comedy, the dramas, the gardening programmes (even they have got a bit of diversity now).
    I dislike the news/current affairs in terms of ‘THE NEWS’ and headlines. It’s tabloid, narrow, and biased. I would never rely on the Beeb to keep me informed about what goes on within these shores, or around the world. Yet step sideways, to From Our Own Correspondent, or the World Service, and expand your vision. I'd hate to lose those.
    I don’t have a telly. It is the same there?
    And I rely quite a lot on satirists of the news to fill me in on the background.

    1:08:12 - "I'd sworn never to wear evening dress until Palestine was free."
    I second Stewart's reaction to that bolt from the sacré bleu. Also hopelessly on board with the jester / shaman parallel. "Not remotely normal", "Like something from the X-Files", "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?" - just a smattering of testimonials from my numerous romantic conquests.
    Not that I could aspire to dumb down; 'hopelessly' in a not-remotely-normal way. Indefatigably and unalopogetically.
    I love 'Didn't You Kill my Brother' ("You should always put a dead badger on a head wound."). I went through a phase, in my mid-twenties, of dragging people home from the pub, getting stoned with them and making them watch that and 'The Wicker Man' with me.

    Fuckin’ A. And I first saw Alexei aged 6 in Kirkby when my mother taught at St Basils, and 17 years later I stood on stage with Michael Redmond - it was Hackney 1989 - and I won the prize - when he did the “a lot of people say to me..”GEt out of my garden”. The best joke Michael did related to his very small wife, that was always about a half mile behind him as they staggered home from the pub. She was very small and had short legs, but he really loved her.. brilliant.

      The UK is increasingly and blatantly, right-wing authoritarian, with the full support of Establishment puppet Sir Keir. Banning books which oppose this grossly unfair, unjust system. Allowing its agencies to murder with impunity. Millions of families having to depend on food banks to survive and the incremental privitisation of the NHS, are accepted norms. Effectively, a one-party state with no opposition to this fake democracy based on greed, privilege, gross injustices against the poor, sick, vulnerable etc. Propped up and enabled by so-called 'free press' owned and controlled by right-wing billionaires, plus state broadcaster BBC propaganda-wing of the right-wing Establishment. A republic based on real democracy - where monarchy is a self-financing tourist attraction - is the only realistic solution. Anything less will always end in bitter disappointment for the many good people working for a fair and just society. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/oct/01/ban-anti-capitalist-resources-schools-stifle-dissent-orban-hungary

    Remember Steve Frost & Mark Arden in the first series of The Young Ones - various hapless characters, presumably their own material, inserted into that week's storyline. The thick Coppers, the Skinheads trying to get into the party etc.

    Many Alternative (left-wing) comedians eventually did advert voice-overs. It was part of the decline of the left-wing through the 1980s. The earnings for half a day way above a whole series input. Insane economics.
