Fun fact he’s a badass
😂
Yep, THIS
Pretty much an undeniable fact
Blasphemous is literally like berserk.
berserk the 90s anime is legit my fave anime of all time. its the only anime ive ever seen that never once gave in to awful anime tropes. also Guts leitmotif is a perfect lugubrious song
@@greghuffman3061if you liked the anime, then you should read the manga, it's bloody amazing
@@greghuffman3061 watch hajime no ippo the fighting if you like anime’s that haven’t given into money and rep
The penitent one is from a religious group called the brotherhood of the silent sorrows, and its because he was a member of this group that he feels he must atone for his past
What makes me think why he was chosen by The Miracle is that perhaps he was the most devoted to his order’s cause. I really like this charather because he’s so mysterious, a pretty skilled swordsman knight with no background and does not speak due to his vow of silence.
@@matheussilvarodrigues3576its just an allegory to Jesus. Love blasphemous but the game is more aesthetic and atmosphere than lore and gameplay, mind you the best aesthetic and atmosphere
@@guibeck8259yeah exactly. Its really not a deep game imo. The truth is a man with a female breast attempting to feed a baby with a suffering expression is grotesque and that is why it is in the game along with 99 percent of it. In blas2, i skipped every cut scene and enjoyed the atmosphere
@@guibeck8259idk man i really love the gameplay, combat is super fun

Fun fact about mea culpa, in Elden Ring there is a greatsword called the Blasphemous Blade that bears a striking resemblance to Mea Culpa. Also the name itself
He looks like he's in the band imperial triumphant
I mean I’m pretty sure it’s more of a reference to the sword of actuation from berserk. But I would like to think it’s also a reference to blasphemous.

You roll down a staircase…
You slide down a ladder
@@lucky7bolt456unless the staircase has rails

They "fixed" that in Blasphemous 2...
The reason the Penitent One took a vow of silence is because the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow was inspired by the Twisted One, who took his divine punishment without ever making a sound.
They opposed the teachings of His Holyness Escribar, which earned them his anger and eventually let to their genocide, from which the Penitent One got resurected.
Wait, but he said three words: mi gran culpa
Not a word of complain or pain no, He just humbly acepted his punishment without a cry wich is more to what the Brotherhood was reffering to.@@RostyslavShpakowsky
Escribar ended up being right about the miracle being bad but he was then corrupted by the miracle. And the penitent one now is trying to kill the miracle because he realises the brotherhood of silent sorrows was wrong about worshipping the miracles blessings
@@ape13not the miracle rather the high wills
@@arandomdude3109 its both, because in the 2nd one he kills the miracle's child and in the first one he killed the high wills who were fueling the miracle
The Mea Culpa was a sword made by the Miracle. A woman prayed for punishment for her sins, so her sins were made into a sword which she stabbed herself with. This explains why the sword's name translates to "My Guilt," it is a sword born of sin and is one of the few weapons in the series that can kill the Miracle.
...until the rugpull moment at the end where SIKE! Akshually u can't kill da Miracle lol

The Brotherhood of the Penitent come of a real Brotherhood in Seville, in Semana Santa. Its called the brotherhood of silence. Its the only brotherhood dont have music when the Christ go to the streets. You cant even applaud, you cant talk.
One particular enemy minon in the game, the ones wearing a sort of balaclava with a flail and their top is naked, we have those guys in the Philippines and they do "penitensya" on Lenten season where they flail themselves in their body as an act of penitence.
That's very interesting! There's a ton of attention to detail in this series.
This might be a somewhat late reply. But these kind of people existed in medieval Europe too, I believe they are (and were) called flagellants, thus their name in game
@@davidgericke9764 Ah, Catholics all around the world are connected. 😊😊😊 What would happen if the Philippines was still under Spanish rule today?
There are towns in spain where the practice still exists
The sword and masked helmet with throns also resemble Looking Glass Knight from Dark Souls 2.
Looking glass knight itself looks religious with those three faces and the angel wings, even his sword looks like mea culpa
@@abrahamrangel2326i remember making a Tigris of Gaul build from the movie Gladiator in Dark Souls 2 using that mask a while back.
I believe that both designs were inspired by the appearance of King Baldwin IV in the 2005 film “Kingdom of Heaven,” as well as the Nijmegen helmet used by the Roman cavalry in ancient times. It’s got to be one of my favorite character design tropes
"Mea culpa" is said during mass where some individuals beat their chest as they say the phrase asking for forgiveness of sins they made this past week. It's just like woman who beat her chest with the statue that became the hilt of the sword of the Penitent One.
Mes culpa translates directly from Latin: my guilt. However, meaning wise, it would be more precise to say “my fault”. This statement plays an important role during several prayers and other religious rituals were one recognizes their own sins, and how their wrongdoings affects themselves as the people surrounding them. Such as, how it’s our fault that Jesus Christ was sacrificed. We all murdered him. The moral of the story is that, even if we didn’t personally voted for him to be chosen to be crucified in place of Barrabás, we are humans all the same; such as the ones who directly wished for his death.
“Mea culpa” also manifests itself in other ways from a cultural standpoint in places where and when Catholicism reigned above anything else. Such is the one you correctly mentioned in your comment. Such tradition took place during the Via Crucis (Way if the cross). A solemn religious festivity were Jesus tortuous final events are enacted (from the moment he was apprehended, to when he exhaled his last breath in the cross). These individuals would beat themselves while they follow Jesus carrying his cross in his way to Golgotha.
Again, punishing themselves because “It’s their fault”. Sinning equalizes to sentencing Jesus each an every time time. So they’re undergoing a self assigned penitence. So basically these are the origins of all those words and concepts.
Delivering humanity from evil is a strange way of putting it. Humanity is the evil and he payed the price for it.
Exactly, like I never got the saying "Jesus died for our sins". No he didn't. WE killed him.
Sin is the sickness, not us. If humanity were evil GOD wouldn’t care to send Jesus to die for us. It makes me happy knowing The Creator doesn’t find me evil, but hates my sin so much he sent his only son to die to remove it’s power over me.
Hmmm maybe OP is ….. not a believer. Not everyone knows what the Bible is talking about, and using specific terms will alienate people who don’t know. Christians should care about outreach and not just dunk on somebody because they said one detail in a way you didn’t like
@@tinyt.w.i.m7291 Being evil sometimes is in our nature tho. And in some instances evil is necessary since we're not plants nor trees.
@@N_Tertainment7you don't understand, he was killed so he himself will pay for all of humanity's sin, ever heard of "for god so loved the world, he died for our sins", if he wanted to live he can literally wipe out the world of all living things but instead died in a cross just so the almighty father could forgive us all so instead the world that day got rid of all sins but in exchange we became sinners.

I know that I'm 99% done with blasphemous 2 and the last boss has me a little stuck. 99 freaking percent! I've been loving metroidvanias since I was a kid in the 90s. But it's RARE that I 100 percent them. I am replaying through blasphemous 1 now and back when it came out my dad was sick and going out so I barely remember it. Damn these games are SOOO good. I think B2 is my game of the year so far and there has been some great stuff this year. Cheers and thanks for the lore.
I legit only found out there was a blasphemous 2 yesterday when I was scrolling through games on the PlayStation store. After I platinumed the first game a while back I was craving something similar, I guess I'll be eating good tonight 😁
@ameermoradan you will be dining on THE BEST. I LOVED b1 but B2 is a legit masterpiece of a metroidvania. Cheers to our adventures and deaths.
I loved the game so much, I was nervous it wouldn't be good as a big fan of the first but, gameplay wise at least, it was better. I blasted through the whole thing in like 2 weekends, then got royally stuck on the penultimate boss until my friend showed me a cheese lol
Even the sword handle have torns. He is punished in every swing.
I believe there is also a thorn embeded into the handle, gifted by Deogracias, that "grows with the burden the bearer carries"
Fun fact of both Escribar and The Penitent One, Escribar dreamt of a a prophecy that one of the members of the Brotherhood of Silent Sorrow would kill him, So Esrcibar ordered Chrisanta and others to kill everyone. But The Penitent was MEANT to replace him, so he survived.
Twisted are the ways of the Miracle.
The Penitent One having to come back for more and not being able to rest always made me a little sad, especially since Mea Culpa is gone. He really did complete his work in the first game.
Also, his design was initially inspired by the Mirror Knight in Dark Souls 2, I believe
The sword he wields “Mea Culpa” has a miniature statue of the twisted one as its hilt
Also the sword is referred to as “they” which implies it may be something brought to life by the miracle
How is he able to fight with that thing on his head.
He has strong neck muscles
Imagine if he did a headbutt
Before the name, 'The Penitent One', his name was *Jeff* .
The capirote was also worn by those who were about to serve penitence assigned under the strict judgement of the Inquisition. In other words, a creative and cruel way to publicly humiliate sinners.
❤ Blaspemous
He dies… a lot! 😂
He is most likely already dead or undead, given that Crisanta killed him before throwing him to the place where he begins his journey.
@@regisdenoir1361I think he just through multiple cycles of resurrection, to mirror the resurrection of Christ from the grave after his crucifixion, so technically, he isn’t undead but just can never die and will always return to complete whatever task he needs to complete

something i dont understand is when the penitent one is doing an execution in blasphemous 2 he somehow still has the thorn, but that shouldnt be possible since mea culpa got erased at the end of blasphemous 1
It’s some item he got in the second game I believe that allows him to do executions with thorns.
Remember custodia of sin, that thorn bush that sprouted to get the canon ending, thats whats in his hand
I dont think it's like that, the custodia will sprout in ending A and turn him into a tree, but in ending C it vanishes with the twisted one that touched him right befor it happend. I think that means that the twisted one gave him some of his power which may helped him endure the time between both games. Furthermore since mea culpa vanishes with the twisted one it means he had forseen the whole plot of ending C and created the sword as a key and even knew that the penitent one needs to raise again in Blasphemous 2@@ape13
Well you had seen the ending it means you had seen the part with the twisted one. He simply got touched by him and the "power" got passed on as it seems.

*SPOILERS*
Mea Culpa actually translates to “My Guilt” if taken literally, which is in line with The Three Words spoken my the first miracle: “my great guilt.” The sword is hinted to be the physical manifestation of the Miracle’s own guilt at the suffering it inflicts unintentionally at the behest of the High Wills and their hunger for worshipers. The miracle wills the Penitent one into life after death out of guilt so that it may exact vengeance upon the High Wills for the torture they have spoken onto the world by creating the Miracle. Mea Culpa disappears at the end of the first game not because the Penitent One’s guilt is absolved, but because the Miracles guilt is absolved. This is again implied in Blasphemous 2 wherein the Miracle again attempts to manifest free from the High Wills control, however as a creation made to induce suffering it is unable to do so without creating suffering again. Mea Culpa is not created again because the Miracle is no longer guilty, rather it seeks to be freed from the burden of its own corrupting influence by manifesting in The Child. It is instead seeking to avoid guilt, hence Ruego Al Alba which is roughly in old Spanish “I pray for Dawn” or even more literally “I pray for the light” indicating the Miracle’s wishes for redemption.
Actually "Mea Culpa" is most likely "My Guilt"
-Source: My mother tongue is Spanish.
1- The word "Mea" does not exist, but it's somewhat similar to the word "Mia" or "Mi" which means "My" in English.
2- Even if it existed, no way in hell that "Mea" "Mia" or "Mi" means "Through"

Blasphemous were Christians (followers of the message of Jesus Christ). Before not all Christians believed that Jesus was a God. They believed in someone called "Elah" (the Worshipped one) who nowadays we know as "Allah" and Jesus worshipped, guess what? Translate in Aramaic "God" and you find our who he worshipped.
Oh, the one killing these Christians were the other side of Christians (the bullies), believing that Jesus was God. Ask yourself, who's this crazy to blasphem at that time? Only few, but that mask was put to many people how you can see while playing

Well maybe we or i dont know for certain but in the first game it could always be new member of the brotherhood that you play after respawn, meaning that his mind (the player) posses them and only the gear travels.
