I was convinced the cab height camper looked waaaay better than one with a higher top, and it kinda does. But the extra space sounds nice for sleeping in the back, and the leer 180 or snug high liner is starting to grow on me.

Same here. I love the idea of having that extra space. Thinking about the 180

Hi top camper shell if your over 5 foot 9 inches tall..if your shorter cab level camper shell allows you to sit in your bed without your head hitting the ceiling.

I much prefer the higher/tops/ceilings. A person cannot sit up as comfortably in a flat top and with a lower beds for head-room, that decreases under-bed storage. So, I love the ones you dig in your whole video.

Do not buy Leer!!! I bought a Lear 180XR September of 2023 for my Ford. It has been a complete nightmare from so many angles it's unbelievable. I have learned alot since this nightmare began, things an average consumer would not know. The following is a high level summary of issues. The fabrication of the cap has many flaws, some showed up over the 6 weeks it was installed.
1)Various paint flaws. Cap was installed filthy and dealer refused to wash. Some came to light during initial wash, swirls, fish eyes, paint chipped.
    2) fiberglass finish is poor. Worst being a globe of fiberglass that rubbed paint off my truck that Leer and dealer should have caught. Paint shop said it would be a very easy fix.
    3) Rear window overhang edge rubbing against the truck where there should be a solid clearance. Dealer did not do a clearance check and failed to recognize that cap was assembled incorrectly and resulted in tailgate paint line rubbed off in 2 weeks.
    4) Multiple Window leaks showed up after driving for an hour in a light rain. Seriously?
    5) the cap to truck rail also leaked where truck bed sides and bottom were wet. Way beyond a little moisture.
I bought a Leer for my last truck in 2000 and it was great for over 20 years. I expected the same level of quality but this new Leer is a complete bust. It has been 4 months since I've started working with the dealer on resolution and nothing to date. Because of dealer attitude and leer poor quality i have asked for a refund. I am out the $4000 for the cap and have $2000+ worth of paint repairs. They have had the cap for over 3 months. Dealer claims leer has not made any decision with one excuse after another.
After 4 months, i found a leer 1-800 number. Leer corporate told me i should be able to get a refund. Her boss told the person i was talking to that Leer does not want to hear from customers directly, leer said i had to work through dealer. Period! Even if dealer is rude, lied, and constant excuses, Leer does not want to know. I submitted an online request to leer and never heard back. Do NOT buy Leer at this time as quality is very bad with very poor customer support. I would post photos but this forum does not allow.

I've had my Softopper for 6 years now..Yes I do wax it but I also don't need to have another person to help me take it off when I have to load a tall item..also it works great for camping and traveling when you have decked installed in the bed.

I know you do not like the ARE bubble top, but I have 3 gen extend cab, with that cap, and built a baha style camper with kitchen slide out, and did the rear seat delete. The slight hight of that cap allows to sit up strait in side the cap, big game changer! supper cool off road rig. The 4 door tacoma shortbed sucks in useful space, (just a car) The extend cab gen 3 with long bed is the real deal ! Looks is nice, but function of the truck is also important. I have had a total of 13 tacoma's, two were before they called them Tacomas. 458,000 miles on one of them !

The mid rise has always been the way to go for me. Can’t imagine the extra few inches would make any difference in MPG, still looks good, and the extra head room will make livability a lot nicer. The taller ones for me, for some reason just look butt ugly. Got to have windows with screens unless you never are out in 70+ temperatures.

Just bought a 17 off road access cab with 28k miles, came with a lear topper i love the truck and the topper. I do landscaping so being able to just lock my tools over night instead of take them out is clutch. Can still fit 3 kayaks in easy too. Do they make roof racks for the topper?

I have Leer 180 cab height with windoors, looks great but need more head room especially with Decked system. A roof rack in front like Prinsu rack etc makes difference in how the mid rise looks.

  • @janjohannessmith7033

Nice taco! I wish I had any old truck. My old 72 Toyo Hilux 1800c engine two-wheel drive got me all over the Sierra Nevada's no problem. And that thing was primitive!

    • @janjohannessmith7033
      @janjohannessmith7033 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Then that day I came around the corner of the mining road and there was mama bear! And cubs! She grunted and lowered her head and charge my little truck, I threw it in reverse and floored it, spraying her with rocks and dirt, she turned off and I got away! That Mama Bear could have flipped my little truck over very easily.! So I eventually got the indestructible 72 Toyota Land cruiser four-wheel drive, fj40. That thing was unstoppable! Massive frame and driveline and ball and socket front axle, full water jacket engine, thing would only do 55 miles an hour in third gear, after I almost got killed on the interstate by big rigs I retired that one also to a collector.

  • @Bearsfan920

Looks great, does the extra 4 inches make you have to hand wash your Truck. I want to buy a truck cap, and I’m 6”2. I live in Wisconsin, where it snows a lot. The salt makes me want to wash my Truck more, so it doesn’t rust from the salt. Can you go through a automatic wash? My truck isn’t lifted. You kinda sold me on the 180, but I’m just wondering if it’ll go through a automatic wash. If a 180 won’t go through a wash, I might just go with high rise on a 2021 Ram Big Horn.

Has anyone put a roof top tent on a 180? I am soon pulling the trigger on a brand new 180XL for my 5.8’ Silverado bed. The salesman told me to think hard if I want a rack system as it’ll have to be ordered with that upgrade because they reinforce the top to support the weight. I’m curious if it would be computable with an RTT. I see cab height caps with the racks and RTT. But mid-high rise on a short bed? Not sure if it’ll work.
Great video! My dad has a ‘17 Tacoma TRD pro crew cab with the leer cab height cap. Fits his dogs, their beds, rods, cooler, his trapping, gear and a stack of furs during trapping/hunting season.

I hit you up a few weeks ago on a different vid. Thanks for responding! I'm very interested to see your topper build setup considering we live in the same area and experience the same weather and a topper camper setup is exactly the direction I'm going in. Also... I just got the call! I'm picking up my Taco Access Cab on 1/14/23! WooHoo!
For my topper build, I'm seriously considering the "Topper Lift" with insulated canvas tent. This will allow me to keep the topper on and load a 4 wheeler or, insert the sleeping area/drawer system and have a tall & insulated tent that packs down nice and slim in a few seconds. Have you considered the topper lift and, if so, what were your reasons for not going with it?
I'm not a bump top fan but I think you're right, that Leer 180 does look the best! Congrats on the new topper and good luck with the next stage of your build!!

Alway buy a camper top with the front window can be removed to clean the outside camper windows and rear of outside cap windows of pickup..
Mid rise create lots more room then the flat roof camper tops…I use my wind-door alot while camping!
    Leer camper parts are available..
The bump top …it has more carrying space inside …you will find this out why the flat tops ..does not make sense ?

Fantastic segment. Love the enthusiasm. Showing so many toppers back to back to back is really valuable to see what's out there, how they look and the differences between them. Curious if you've seen a Moonlander on a Tacoma? I know they are wider and allow for east to west sleeping platforms on larger trucks. But has anyone put one on a Tacoma? And been able to orient the bed east to west as opposed to front to back on a non full sized truck like a Tacoma? Idk if the bed width would even allow that on a Tacoma. Looking forward to seeing your build out. Thanks for sharing.
