I''m just trying to figure out how to grow clover as a lawn alternative, I have no idea about this herd stuff but sounds like a unique specialty. For researchers like me, maybe put "herd" in the title to help target in on a search specific to a baby boomer, sedentary, senior woman lol.

I keep just 1/2 acre in clover at all times. I have fall brassica hunt plots that go in after buckwheat flowers. I also have some really rank old pasture areas that I will plant this fall with red and white clover, oats and orchard grass to make a new meadow. Clover is useful in many applications.

Basically exactly what we are doing lol. Got the clover/chicory because we want to build the herd and really get to see what deer are in the area. We will have Egyptian wheat screening for the edges of the plot then we will be drilling beans into it for the mid and late season. Combination of things I want to try and things you have taught me and things I have been learning in my QDMA classes.

Very good video Jeff. I have some friends who need to hear this one. I have had a quarter acre plot in a wooded area for ten years. It servers very well as a hunting plot. Talking “clover” as good or bad is a general term for plots. I have found (the hard way) it makes a big difference whether someone is planting annual or perennial clover and equally important which species for their location and soil type. Last fall I added annual crimson clover to my rye and wheat planting. The deer see to be enjoying that plot. There you go again -chicory. Have you had your chicory coffee yet?

I'd rather just take a flail mower to it and be done. I also like to incorporate native wildflowers for pollinators. I know this sounds hippie-ish, but have you ever thought about doing some stuff regarding a more natural food plots that not only incorporates habitat improvement for whitetail but also other critters/pollinators. I believe there would be a market for this. Just thinkin'

By the sounds of what you have been saying, It doesn't sound like I should be planting clover on my small food plot out in the woods. The area around my camp has a cornfield about 2 miles away and a bunch of apple trees about a mile away in the opposite direction. Any suggestions on what would be a good thing to plant in about a 1/2 acre plot in the woods to get the timing right for November?

Never rye grass...not rye grain. Can combine clover with oats, rye, wheat, brassica in the late summer plantings.
Never combine brassica with rye, wheat or oats. That's when you can tell someone creating the mix doesn't have enough experience to be selling seed.

I choose chemicals for food plots, or I wouldn't plant them. This of course while being surrounded by 1000s of acres of chemically controlled corn, bean and hay production while the farmers use more chemicals than in 1 year, than I go thru in a lifetime.

In your last EZ no Till plot video you said you don’t want the food near your borders so the deer don’t bed on their land.
In the case of a long skinny property (93yards widex450 yards long) would you say make the food in a u shape back by your house and bedding at the other end of the property so you catch deer coming off the neighbors and direct them back to your bedding?
Or on a narrow property like this is bedding on your neighbors inevitable?
