You are keeping me riveted to my seat with these! and that will likely continue until either you stop doing Legend reviews, or until I break down and just go get one! lol. Best reviews I've seen on this machine by far.
Guys n Gals I was using the stock 11 coil in the Nox. We wanted to keep it as fair as possible, watching Merrill use the legend, I liked what I saw. I thought it very much held its own.
Thanks for all you do for all of us, my wife and I have discovered a new way of life that we both love! Just found a Nokta pro pack bundle in stock and it's on the way. 18 months into detecting and doing well in the cornfields of Illinois. I use the 800 she has Apex, she's getting a big upgrade. Your tutorials, knowledge, humour and finds are second to none!
Have to handed to Phil for calling the double signal, he's very experienced. Another great video merrill the legend seems to be a very capable machine.
I like using iron bias when I get to a loaded site, so I can just cherry pick the obvious tones. When I have cleared all of the shallow stuff out, I lower my iron bias by smaller increments until I get to deeper signals.
Looking forward to you giving the Deus 2 50 hours. I almost gave up on it but now it’s clicking. Still more comfortable with the nox but the D2 has a ton of capabilities! I just hit 50 on it. Your 100% correct if I was just getting into the hobby the nokta is best value.
OK...before I start watching...So glad to see you back in the saddle...and really looking forward to this faceoff between the two, even if its a little uneven given the relative experience with the two machines.
your making a lot of sense.keep them videos coming.im thinking about getting the legend.after looking at this video you got my mind made up for me.great stuff
Another great informative video. I found it interesting how Phil through years of use could detect two different levels of finds. Maybe a video on advanced tones and sounds could be in order.
This was the sort of test I was looking for! The Nox and Legend are close enough that a new detectorist might start with the Legend and be perfectly happy. It comes with quite a lot, at a lower price and it is a close match. It needs to get underwater tested (summer or a warmer clime). Deus II seems to be great too (if rather more expensive). I don't have the money for new right now, but both are tempting. I wish I knew if MineLab has something in the works.
Nice comparison video but the bigger coil on the Equinox is a pure advantage for depth and frankly should have beaten you worse. Two things I found on my Legend are that multi 2 is slightly deeper than multi one in most cases especially on low conductors and field multi 2 is the deepest I think. 2nd unless I read something wrong the stability control is only used and operates on beach mode not on any other mode. You'll find in Beach mode that if you bring the recovery speed down to two or three it runs a lot quieter and paired up with a three or four on the stability control works best. Just my observation.
Merrill keep going deep with your understanding of the Legend updates will be a game changer, all the testing by guys like you who understand the tech. Will make this machine a real monster, or a Hoginistic Ledge nary bomb, love yah man
Thanks Merrill and Phil! Very enlightening video. Learning your machine is very important. Probably have to dig LOTS trash getting there! Updates on the Legend will be interesting to see
Thank you for your assessment it made a bunch of sense since if some ppl are on a budget about updates and PRICE $ Is a biggie ! for me I have a 440,540, vanquish and simplex now so going to see what un folds in the next year before I throw another 1000 at my hobby lol thankyou for your content really enjoyable video s 👊
Hey Merrill....some things I've discovered with the Legend....on the higher conductive coins if you'll listen it emits a snappy very sharp pop at the end of ur swing. Your Wheats will ring right around 42 and nickels will ring at 24. Also try to remember to look at the Ferro check once you pop the plug to check for iron as sometimes if it's further down it won't register at first. I've been testing it on previously hunted ground with the Anfibio and I've actually been surprised on how much I'm finding. The settings I've been going with are Field, Sensitivity 30 if possible, Multi 1, Recovery Speed 5, 4 Tone. Well hope you have a blessed day...HH!
Just a small note, I noticed dry sand on your coil from the beach yesterday. If I go to the beach with a y machine I always take off the coil cover and wash it down as you probably know this can cause falling in the machine.
@MetalDetectingNYC very inportant question for mys self in end of 2022. If right now you need to choose the detector Nox 800? or The legend pro package? wich You would choose? before I had simplex plius, now wnat to upgrade and confused totaly.. :/
Great video Merrill 👍 We need this video everyone is looking for a more competitive detector for the deposits! With these high gas prices 😆 keep swinging and digging Merrill 👍
The most important lesson Phil showed us is that sketchy targets aren't always sketchy. On a site that produces dig MORE not less. As for the two targets together, I've seen that on my Kruzer many times. The trick is to wiggle the coil on one target while moving away from the other target to see how it sounds. NM coils can sometimes be sensitive on the edges and drag close targets up or down. So you need to make sure neither target is near the edge of the coil while you swing on the other. Then one will fade to iron and one will not. I wish you had dug the third target in that mess that Phil said was nothing though. It's wasn't a high tone but it looked nickelish to me. When it comes to small targets you'll probably need to switch to M2. The NOX has park one and park 2 to weight the frequencies, the LEGEND gives you the option to weight the frequencies in every mode using the M1 and M2 feature as well rather than doing it with a direct mode switch. So essentially you have as many modes as the nox. You have parkm1, parkm2, fieldm1, fieldm2, beachm1, beachm2 and gold mode. There may be differences in how the frequencies are managed however.........which can account for the smaller items. I suspect you're just hearing them but not digging them because they ring in low perhaps?
I would agree with your last statement. That one target that he didn't think he was hitting was registering low (~3-5) on the VDI display, so it was detecting it.
You mentioned using ground tracking. I know every place/situation is different but relic hunting for deep targets, I’ve always understood that tracking would try to retune as you’re sweeping over a whisper signal and track it out? Assuming it’s the same with deep coins/jewelry? Enjoyed the review and sense of humor.

I thought I knew the Equinox at 300 hours ..... now at 2000, I realize I didn't know near as much as I thought. 😁
Hi Merrill, I watched your videos of course. But I still wonder about the seperation issue from the legend and the equinox. I only have a legend for about two years which is now updated to 1.11. I think the iffy signal/merc dime test, you were still getting interference even when you couldn’t hear it as much. EMI kills depth in my experience so next time, try turning off the Nox and see if it improves. Great test and moderation of your video
Congrats on the silver ring Merrill. Don’t say the letter “K” too loud, there might be a Karen near by and say she lost it. 😂 I noticed you still have sand on your coil. Hopefully you don’t have any black sand between the coil and cover. It might interfere with depth or cause some falsing, maybe. Also, if you have the latest update, I think you can set up the Legend to speaker and headphone s simultaneously. Great video. _/ 👍
Honest question? How can a pull tab ever be confused with a penny? Especially an older penny. Those are in totally different places on any scale I’m familiar with. Pull tabs are dug with lesser discrimination settings to not lose out on possible rings, nickels etc. pennies , dimes and quarters ring totally different, correct?
My next video is going to be a target ID bible for the legend. Zinc pennies (fresh drop) ring up about 41 and memorial pennies ring up 43-45 generally. Most pull tabs are in the 30s.
