The Celtic New Year...Time for A Deep Clean

- Samhain marks the Celtic New Year and I am getting into the spirit of things, making plans and doing some deep cleaning. I want to face into winter with my dreams and aspirations clear in my mind; as well as snuggle down into a clean house. If you would like to make your own cleaning agents, some recipes are below.
I prefer all things natural which includes my cleaning products. Apart from those, I make my own medicines too. If you would like to know how to make medicines yourself, have a look at my Introduction to Herbal Medicine course,
www.danusirish...
My two little books, The Weed Handbooks Volume 1 and 2 are helpful aids to getting started with wild plants and they are available here - www.danusirish...
We have just celebrated Samhain which is one of the great festivals on the Wheel of the Year. My course Wise Woman Way training is a transpersonal course which follows the Wheel of the Year. We meet with Plant Spirits, Irish Goddesses and craft magical and medicinal remedies as we heal from past hurts. Our next festival to celebrate will be the Winter Solstice. More information here - www.danusirish...
Thanks so much to Lol for the music and editing. You can find out more about Lol's music here lolhardimanmus... He is also on youtube - / @lolhardiman5247
The cleaning agents I use in my home are natural and free of toxins. I clean windows and glass with a mixture of white vinegar and a drop of liquid soap. To wash woodwork I use Soda Washing Grains which are dissolved in hot water and then a clean rag or cloth is soaked and wrung out and applied to the woodwork. I use the Gem brand which is freely available in Ireland. For bath and sink cleaning I mix bicarbonate of soda with a little white vinegar and some liquid soap to make a smooth paste. Sometimes for extra hygiene I add a little lemon juice. This is very effective for bath tubs, sinks and taps and tiles. Sometimes I will add a drop of a favourite essential oil for a clean fresh scent. I like to spray my laundry - especially bedding - with Lavender water. There are a number of ways to make Lavender water. Sometimes I infuse water with Lavender flowers, with a cap of vodka added. Alternatively I use 150ml of distilled water and 30ml vodka and add about 20 drops of an essential oil. I hope you enjoy making your own home cleaning agents.

Thanks for watching and Happy New Year!
I love to see how the chickens, dogs and cats are able to roam free around your land - thank you for letting them live their best lives!
They are all happy and each in their own world - fascinating to watch them just being themselves. xx
Teri, I love this. I have a theory that our New Year should begin in March... then we need 13 months (Moonths) because September would then be the 7th month (Sept meaning 7) October 8th month, (Octo = 8) November 9th month, December (Decem = 10) 10th month... our natural rhythms have been tampered with when the Gregorian calendar was forced upon us... With 13 moon-ths the actual year would be balanced and in tune with natural rhythms xxx
I agree we are not in the right balance and as we have 13 moons why not 13 months. Don't know enough though - about the different calendars. xx
Thank you for the cleaning tips Terri, I would be lost without my white vinegar and bicarb 😁 I have been using them for a while now. We've gradually replaced all the shop bought stuff with more natural ingredients which are , as you say, much better for the planet. Always a pleasure to see you best wishes 🌼
Best Wishes to you too Gina - Happy New Year xx
@DanusIrishHerbGarden happy New Year to you and yours Terri x

Ha ha - so helpful for you!😂 Out kitchen window gets very grimy from the cats rubbing against it. Most of the time i don't notice but when I do😳 xx
Happy New Year to you as well. Holding a vision of nurturance and wellbeing for everyone. Love the shot of the kitty in the window with the arch relection behind. 😻
I do believe that if we put our minds to it, we can bring wellbeing for everyone into the world. xx

this is my favorite time of year and my favorite channel on TH-cam ❤
Thank you so much, I'm honoured. xx
It's really a good time for cleaning, planning and dreaming. All the best for you as well.
Thank you! You too! xx
Rainbows alwaya reside where they are seen, it's your local rainbow. Great video on cleaning tips. Will try these out.
Hope you like them - I couldn't go back to those shop bought things xx
Terri, have you written your family’s history and your own biography ? I love storytelling and I am so curious how you came to live in Connemara and I guess, just your family’s story. Maybe you have a blog post and I just haven’t found it. Your videos are so soothing and interesting for us rat-race city folk!
I live here because this is where I am from, my family's roots are here and I can trace them back on father's mother's side 400 years. I have traced the family history on all four sides but mainly the Connemara branch
Thanks for your interest xc
Inspiring as always most appreciated... and a gentle reminder 'kick up the bum' to get on with cleaning 😮
best wishes and thanks for posting ✨
You are welcome. Enjoy the work xx
First time this year, I clipped around 20 Hydrangeas blooms from my parents plants and dried them my 84 year old mother, was blown away how lovley they are dryed.
Aw, how lovely for her xx
I agree about the chickens, cats & dogs
They must all love your garden
I hope to visit Western Coast of Ireland with maybe my granddaughter, daughter in the near future.
I was born in Norway 72 years ago, but I have made my life in South West London. Blessings and prayers from a crazy cat Lady. My oldest daughter’s name for me. I have lived with cats for 68 years in Norway & England. I also had a German Shepherd Female Dog. She never had puppies, and lived for just over 16 years. ❤
German Shepherds are such lovely dogs. You had her for a long time xx
Hi Terri, I received my copy of your book. Thank you very much. It will come in really handy 😊
It certainly will. Glad it arrived as post has been erratic xx
It’s always so wonderful to watch your videos.. thank you!
Thank you very much - glad you enjoy them xx
I know that I am late posting, but I just want to say how I adore both you and Lol. I have learned so much from your channel Terry. You are an inspiration and breath of fresh air. I love these clips that you post and share with us. I feel that I am experiencing your beautiful land, as if I was actually there on holiday with you. Happy New Year to you! xx
Hello to you both, lovely video again to see all the natural colours vibrant even under a dark sky. Cleaning for the New Year meant repainting my kitchen adding a new and fresh dimension upcycling existing furniture with a fresh new colour endless joy at achieving and bringing about the changes. I follow the Celtic calendar, " Colette's" learnt the" Old Irish way of pronouncing each day and month on Calendar.. My father was a Roscommon man, living in England heritage roots are deep. Really enjoy your video and lifestyle, Samhain blessings to. You for the New Year . Hugs and Blessings to all.💚🌹
Samhain blessings and Happy New Year to you too Linda. Sounds as if you had a great and satisfying day with the kitchen. xx
Hugs 💚🌹🤗
Loved this 🙏🌱💫🐈⬛thank you 🙏
Glad it is helpful xx
Lovely video. I especially liked all the shots of your animals, the one of your black cat in the beginning was very striking😍
That was Milly, who is now in the spirit world. She was looking up at the pigeon that visited us for a few days. She was a terror for hunting birds and you can see she really wanted it😳
Also a bicarb and vinegar person - surgical spirit in some places too. Lovely to see your extension in progress too with a fantastic end result. Your cupboards - who would have known they were originally pallets!! This has been the worst year for weather here. Pretty poor harvest too. Most eaten by slugs - even my two plum tree leaves were stripped when their pots blew over. Not much else can be done outside - it is sodden! So cleaning indoors and sewing a lot! Sewing is the prize for completing a chore! LOL!
I love sewing when I have my sewing head on. Lots of sewing to do for Christmas presents so sometimes rain is a blessing xx
Thank you Terri I’ve been using white vinegar and baking soda too for cleaning its great. Love you seeing all your cats dogs and chickens 😊
Always lovely to watch and learn something new from you 🍀
Thank you! Cheers! xx
Happy Celtic New Year to you too Terri. I have been making my own cleaning products for some years now, I was allergic to the scents and chemicals in the bought ones and a friend recommended a small book to me for making window cleaning spray. polish and laundry stuff as well, I love the clean smell it gives off, I use peppermint in my window cleaning spray, and olive oil, tablespoon white vinegar and lavender oil in my furniture polish the house smells lovely and fresh and clean, and you wipe it on leave for minute and then buff to a shine, I love polishing things to a shine, takes more time but it is more than worth it. I am going to try your, window cleaning spray as well, then I can choose which one suits my mood at the time. My family laugh at because I make my own cleaning stuff and herbal medicines but I just take no notice and get on with it the satisfaction I get from producing my own stuffs out weighs their stupid comments by a mile. I feel so much closer to nature the more natural stuff I produce, and my granddaughter is getting more interested but , I know her mum won't let her do any of it but I am going to show her so, that when she is older she can make her own stuff anyway. I made her some beautiful hand made soap shaped like roses because her middle name is Rose, with oats in as she has eczema, and they threw them away and told her not to accept anything from me as I was dangerous and didn't know what I was doing, I do still treat her occasionally when she comes on Sunday with her dad, and I ask him and he reluctantly say it is up to me and if Cara my granddaughter is happy too I then give her whatever she might need all made with lots of love and magic. I do however believe the time is coming where our skills are going to be needed much more than before unless we get burned as witches once again, something in history I hope doesn't repeat itself🤣💖💜💚 P.S Apparently I am talking a load of BS about all the dangerous chemicals in food, cleaning products etc, you know what I mean so I don't need to list everything. Thanks for all your wisdom I love everything you do 💖💖💞
I hope your granddaughter gets to see you every week as you are light of her week I would think. Your daughter in law sounds like a very foolish and ignorant woman - even if she didn't agree with your way of life, to throw away a beautiful hand made gift is so disrespectful.. You are right about our skills being needed and I agree with you that I hope history doesn't repeat itself - again!! You are a wonderful example and influence for your granddaughter, showing her how to be a strong and independent woman. Sending lots of love xx
Hi Ann your words about your family's distain for your efforts are very moving but I sense a quiet strength in your purpose. I believe these crazy times are coming to a tumultuous end and we will indeed need the skills and the wisdom of our wise elders in the years to come. Nature, like hope, springs eternal and truth can never be suppressed for long. God bless the work and know that you are working with forces much greater than yourself 💚
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Thanks Terri she is certainly the light of my life when she comes. Still going to do what I love, I am going to try candle making, dehydrating food, fermenting food, sour dough, and making my own ink from oak galls and rusty nails for iron oxide, Also my own apple cider vinegar, can't make the fire cider because of my silly stomach. Lots of Love, hugs and Peace 💖 Ann
I wish I had had a gran like you KEEP doing what you do your little one will remember and when she is older she will have essential knowledge and beautiful memories of her wise and loving Nana.Im sorry about the mother. Its tricky try nor to feed her energy.Put your own little circle of protection around both you and your granddaughter ❤
My parents always told me when I was a child that I needed to put more elbow grease into it whenever they had me working! 😅
Thank you for this inspiring cleaning video. All the ingredients for cleaning i have in my house, including overripe lemons, which I normally use for potpourri I can now repurpose as a disinfectant. I love your beautiful garden; it is an oasis in the already beautiful Irish countryside. Take care and God bless 🙌 🙏
You are so welcome! Blessings to you too xx
Lol is so talented! A brilliant musician and a master builder! That is a beautifully made room by any measure, and to do so with upcycled materials is an additional challenge. Outstanding and a work of art. In many ancient cultures the new year begins in the fall, and it makes perfect sense: After the end of the agricultural season, the new year begins. The Jewish new year begins in the fall also. Another great program. Thank you. Peace be with you friend. 🥀🌻🍀🍂🍃🥬
How are you john? Thanks - Lol will be delighted with your comment. Great peace to you and all xx
Hi John thank you so much for your lovely comments, I'm honoured and humbled (leave me SOME modesty! 😂).
I realise that building is actually not a very hard thing to do and our ancestors all built without the input of "experts" and architects. They just got on with it. You're right, though, it's more challenging using pre-used materials in so much as it easily doubles the time to do the job. Very rewarding though, and it feels so good to know you've not made too much of an impact on precious resources as you would otherwise. Blessings to you and your family, John, and thank you so much for your support. It means so much ❤
Thank you for the very kind reply Lol! So good to hear from you. I meant every word. I'm a musician myself, and taught music and played guitar professionally for years (before going to the dark side and becoming a lawyer), so I recognize a great guitarist when I hear one, and a talented builder (even though I'm not much of a carpenter). Many, many blessings to you and your family as well Lol. @@lolhardiman5247
Yes, I agree that this time of year makes sense for it to be the new year, from the darkness to the light. I also found the cleaning ingredients to be helpful, thank you, Terri, and all the best.
All the best to you too Deana xx
Thank you for the video. I like to use thieves too it smells like fall to me. Blessings to you and your husband!
Thank you! You too! Xx
Happy Celtic New Year!!!!😃🙏🌹Blessings and more blessings!!! Well done, beautiful space, Lol is also a carpenter!!!
Thank you! You too! Yes, Lol is a carpenter too - he is very clever altogether and can do anything - except housework😂
Thank you Terry. You live in such a Magical place !I will be making your cleaning stuff as the chemicals catch my throat and I dont want to give my money to the big nastys!Any tips on cleaning a brass v intricate table my beloved Mum left me? Im afraid its very dirty.I managed to scrape off my candle drips but it really needs a good clean to bring it back to shine as it did in Mums house. She would be giving out to me!!!😊
I just use bicarb and lemon juice or warm water and soap xx
Blessings to you Terri for a Wonderful New Year! 🍁 Thank you for this beautiful and inspiring film 🍁🍁🍁
You are very welcome Abby and thank you. Hope the coming year is full of peace and light for you too xx
Terry is there a video of how you make your moisturizer and toothpaste please? Im just finding out about chemicals in cosmetics and Im scared!
There are videos here - th-cam.com/video/cd_h7hM1Ia4/w-d-xo.html and more here -www.youtube.com/@DanusIrishHerbGarden/videos

So glads to hear that. I hope they will be helpful to you xx
🙏🌅❤ from Belgium
Thanks for the cleaning tips!
Happy cleaning. Happy New Year.❤
Thanks so much for your cleaning formulas! As a residential cleaner I can attest to the fact that dishwashing liquid will deal to most cleaning tasks, with a little bit of elbow grease... Loved that shot of your Kitty walking out with your Chookies! ❤ Happy New Year!! ✨️🎉✨️
Edit: When you say to start the New Year with a Clean Sensibility is really resounds - I'm in the Southern Hemisphere but somehow this still holds True, must be in the blood! ❤️🔥
Glad you found them helpful - you know it all already xx
Good evening my good lady all the best
I'm in the process of spring cleaning trying to beat the Queensland summer that begins (in Australia) on the 1st of December. Trying to work in 35 C plus heat/humidity can drain your energy! It's good to see you are spreading the word about using natural/homemade solutions for cleaning: bicarb, lemon, vinegar & Dr. Bronner, same here! Also, sweeping the negativity out the door always makes me feel lighter, one of the best feelings in the world!☀🌺🐞
Yes, that is a good tip isn't it. Much better energetically xx
Oh, Thank You So Much for the Breathtaking Views!🌈The Rainbow was So Magical! ✨Thank You for showing Your Carved Turnip! He came out Wonderfully! We just don't grow them like that here in the States! The Garden and Chickens along with the Kitties were just So Wonderful to see! I Love the back kitchen with the Painted Green ledges on the outside! The Mushrooms and the Little Fellow in Your Window are So Lovely! He Really Caught My Eye! I don't know who He is, but He seems like a Little Guardian! All the Best to You, and Blessings!🏡🧚♀✨💖
I think you mean St. Yves - a Breton saint who was gifted to us by our Breton friend Alain. Blessings to you too xx
Go with the flow. Thank you.
Still learning to do it😂 got to remember it's the best way xx
Thank you 🥰💚I have been deep cleaning with basil infused water.I also started some more lemon Rosemary vinegar cleaner😁 Thank you for sharing your cleaning recipe laundry cleaner💚
Thanks for your recipes too xx
Happy New Year Terri and Lol. Your little 'add-on' kitchen space is functional and beautiful. Lol, you are a handy fellow! Terri, I've made your cleaning paste, and it does a great job! Guilt free as well. We must recycle and take care of our Mother (Earth) so she can take care of us. Blessings to all, from Canada. 🍁
Blessings to you Karen xx Glad the cleaning paste works so well for you - I love it! xx
Watching your videos every Sunday always makes me feel happy and grateful 🩷🩷🩷 Happy Celtic New year ♾️

That is wonderful Lee - delighted to hear that, thanks for letting me know xx
My favourite Canadian .
Love your wee inspiring films : )
So beautiful to hear you talk about your love and how he is a partner with you in all your home and garden dreams and projects!
Would love to see a video showing us all of the symbolic decorations you have around your home! You have so many treasures from nature along with home-made gifts and finds~ spirals and wee representations of animals, the earth and seasons : )
Thank you for speaking out against the global corporations that do harm and how to do things the natural way as much as possible: )
Happy New Year!
Yay lists!
Go raibh maith agat ❤️🕊️
Go raibh maith agat @trese! I think I will put your suggestion on the list. Happy New Year - enjoy your list making xx
Just so lovely Blessings to you and all in the New year . Love the scenery and your chicks , pups and kitty. Thank you for your lessons . Just so heart warming .
Have a wonder week and thank you ❤
You are so kind - thank you very much. So glad you enjoy the videos. See you on Sunday xx
Blessings for a peaceful and Fruitful new year Terri! I am using diluted vinegar in a spray bottle but just would love to extend our cleaning ability to include your recipe - thank you! Outside we are'sweeping' the leaves and trimming the vines - just packed the last dalia bulbs away and mulched- first snow is not long away here in Quebec.
Thought you would have it by now! A friend in Sweden has snow for the last week. Sending Module 4 shortly xx
Happy New Year to you! I was watching your video before I got started on my Sunday cleaning. What a nice inspiration for something that I have just come to see as necessary drudgery. 😄 I love watching your videos, and thank you so much for sharing your experience and wisdom with us. ❤
Glad to be of help. xx
Great idea using the concentrated lemon juice for cleaning. Above 45 degrees latitude lemons are precious gifts for cooking. :)
Go raibh mhaith agat!
Tá fáilte romhat xx
Thank you Terri for sharing, love to watch your videos. Happy new year to you too. Autumn is such a beautiful and magical time of the year. Blessings xx
Thanks so much Maxine - blessings to you too and happy new year xx
Thanks Terri. I weirdly enjoy cleaning at this time of year. Maybe because we are moving to a period of inside times, and enjoying the rest and hibernation. Your dogs are hilarious as if watching you work - in a loving way of course!🍁🐇🍂
I think you are right Corrie - moving inside we want to be cosy and comfy. xx
Good morning!! You have inspired me to start cleaning and I am appreciative if the cleaning recipe. I can't use chemical cleaners. I prefer the clean scent of natural cleaners any way. So good to see you again. Makes my day and puts a smile on my face. Have a wonderful day of cleaning and celebrating!🧹🎃
I can't use those chemical things either, the smell is nauseating. Clean and natural is only way to go. Hoping you are having a beautiful week of joy and good things xx
I've always used white vinegar & baking soda to clean, like my granny did. I'm sensitive to artificial scents & have sensitive skin, so this method always worked best for me. She also taught me to pour a cup of white vinegar in the laundry to help cottons (& other clothes made from natural fibers) retain their colors - particularly those that were dark or bright colors.
So glad that people like yourself are sharing such great tips - this knowledge needs to get out xx
Chickens are a great help. I always try to keep chickens. Thank you for your information about how to make cleaning supplies. I wish you the best until next week.
And all the best to you too Liane xx
Happy new year. Been getting all the gardens put to bed. Planting garlic, bulbs, cabbages etc. Next weekend is the inside clean. Love the cooler temperatures here in Louisiana we can finally open the windows and get some fresh air moving through the house. Thanks for the recipes. I'll give them a try.
You're welcome! xx
Happy New Year Terri and Lol, wishing you and all your family health, and another year of doing all the great things that you do...and more videos please x
Coming up Valli - next Sunday. Happy New Year to you and yours and may you have a year of peace and contentment xx
Ok, now I have to wash my windows with your recipe! When the sun moves lower on the horizon, it's the perfect angle to see the gunk and smears on them! Thanks for another lovely start to my Sunday morning!
Yep! That is how I remember to clean mine😂
Samhain blessings!
Love the reminder to do a good cleaning going into winter! I use many of these for cleaning as well - added a big of grapefruit essential oil in my cleaning spray. And have wool dryer balls - will get my clothes line up soon!
What lovely kale!!
Thanks for sharing your tips. Kale is delicious , some of it volunteered! xx
Happy Celtic New Year, I wish you good health, happiness and peace! Thank you Terri 💚🌙🌿
That is so kind Cynthia , much appreciated and sending same wishes to you xx
Happy New Year Terry & Lol! Thanks for another lovely and inspiring video. Blessings xx
New Year Blessings Jamie xx
Happy New Year!
Many blessings to you and yours!
❤ from SE Texas!
All the very best to you too xx
Happy Celtic New Year Terri. Thank you for sharing the loovle view in your garden .❤
Happy new year to you Genoveva - garden is getting a big tidy up xx
Thanks for the concept of seeds for the new year. That fall is not just the end of growth. Do love our cheerful tchotchkes. I am a list maker and fine with moving them to the next day or season. Things eventually do get done.
They do eventually😂 but we wouldn't want everything to be done at once - we would be bored with nothing to do xx
Do you place herbs in with the wool? Upcycle, recycle or locally sourced. Wonderful!!!❤
No we didn't. It was treated with Borax. All wool from neighbour farmers - they can't sell it as it now regarded as useless!!😕
Happy New Year!! It has never been more important to be in a positive mindset as NOW. To open our hearts and focus our minds on the great things in our Iives. To take the observer role, just as a dormant seed or developing fetus in the darkness. Focusing on the Great Sun fire of our inner soul in self reflection. Even and especially when the darkness surrounding us is at its deepest. We know we hold the seed within and are protected by forces of ancient days!
Beautifully said Carolyn. We really do have the power xx
And to top off this wonderful video, did I see a rainbow from the window? When we were in Ireland the first time, we drove the “back roads” and one fine day we saw three rainbows! I love Ireland!
Yes you did! We are incredibly spoiled for rainbows here. Through Autumn especially we can have two or three in the sky at once. xx
Wishing you and Lol peace and good fortune, health and happiness in the coming new year.
Thanks so much - you are very kind. Many Happy Returns xx
Blessings for the coming year. Hug kitty and pups for me.
Big hugs Tacy - have a very Happy New Year, I hope you are well settled in now. xx
Wow, such wonderful hints and tips! Love your glorious red top ❤️
Thanks so much! 😊 Hope you find them useful xx
I make my own cleaning supplies as well. Cleaning gives you a chance to throw out things or put things back where they belong. I also top off indoor plants with new soil for nutrients for the winter coming. Save your eggshells to pulverize for food for plants. Good video. Cleaning is a positive energy thing.
So true! Good idea re egg shells xx
Good morning Terri, and thanks for the music and the chickens and pets.
You are so welcome xx
You're so right thats how my body cycle is ive discovered as I've got older so ive embraced it 😊
