Exactly the information I needed to complete my rainwater collection system.
Sometimes it's not about the process but the idea (turn the top upside down) that is the inspiration.

Thanks for this. I bought one thinking that the lid came off. Now I can use it to hold rain water.

Love it when I have an idea for a project, search just to see if someone had a better idea and discover not only an easier way to work the project, but keep a function of the original device intact rather than destroyed (The lid in this instance, as i was consigned to destroying the top) Thanks for the vid!

WOW! I've been looking for this! Been cutting inside the lip and using heavy garbage bags to seal using bungee cords.

good for storing sand ... in these northern icy areas. and I use them on our porch to toss the smaller full trash bags in until dump day.

I have done it with a table saw. All you do is set the rip fence at 2 and 1/2 in it's a little harder by yourself but it's feasible better with two people but just turning the barrel on the saw blade make sure to all the liquid is out of it and just turn it till you get all the way around it cuts a nice and even.

Any ideas on how to seal it after the cover has been made?

These barrels are handy and with a removable top, even more so. But just one caution to your viewer if I may. Be VERY SURE you know what was originally in the barrels you get. Many of them used for industrial purposes may have contained all sorts of highly toxic chemicals. I would NOT use any barrel, even if allegedly cleaned out, that contained toxic chemicals for potable water storage or even for water for plants. Use barrels that contained non-toxic substances for that.
Barrels which had toxic chemicals are still very useful. I'm posting a video soon on my channel showing how I converted one to a mobile tool caddy for holding long handled tools like rakes, brooms, etc. Getting the lid off is a good first step.

You can notch that lip that sticks up on the lid to help shed water. You can also add a pair of hooks to each side to apply a stretch cord to keep the lid down

Hi. I have been trying to use these type barrels as pheasant feeders for a while now. This is the best way to make a lid that i have seen so far. How to you turn the lid inside out once it has been cut off? Surely its quite a tricky task or is there a easy way to do it? Thanks for the idea though.

I want to use one of these barrels for a rotating composter. If I remove the lid per your method, does the barrel become too flimsy? I plan on drilling holes in the top to refasten the lid with bungies. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Sorry. I see now, you cut the top off and turn it upside down, not inside out, i thought you meant you turned the lid inside out, not just turn it over. Thanks for the video.

look at :19 sec mark and you'll see his handsaw in the background. Any saw will work just use whatever you have.
