    I noticed older guitar players (I’m 41, so guys in their 50s and 60s or older) will tell you, “there is nothing like picking up a $5000 signature model. It lets you channel the guitarist who played them which affects your playing.” Pretty much the guitarist version of astrology.

      As a 55yr old guitar player I've always thought signature models were at best trinkets for collectors and at worst money grabs by guitar companies and the artists that sell their name to them. And the ultimate "poser move" would be playing a signature model on stage. So I don't know what old guys you're hanging out with.

    About being overwhelmed by options. Having limitations is great for productivity simply because you spend less time choosing. What I’ve learned is the creator is you, not your gear. Don’t be afraid to have favourites that you use all the time, it will rarely diminish your work. However don’t be afraid to experiment with something new to push yourself. The fear of missing out is mostly driven by advertising, your music doesn’t need the mysterious shiny thing people are all talking about. 100% few people will notice or care when they listen to your finished product. The most important thing to remember is the music people won’t hear is the music you fail to put out. So trust yourself and enjoy your favourites and try something new every now and then.

    My experience with Focusrite was surprisingly stunning. I bought a 18i20 and ran out of mic inputs. I then bought a Behringer 8 channel preamp (Focusrite was out of stock at Sweetwater) with the hope of chaining them together. We couldn't get it to work. I called Behringer and went on hold for a half hour. We gave up on that and called Focusrite. The phone rang 3 times and a human answered. Turns out my issue was assigning the Behringer as the master and the 18i20 as the slave. Took ten minutes to solve the problem. Focusrite support is awesome.

    Started learning guitar a decade ago as part of my Mid-Life Crisis. I experimented with a few 'fancy' guitars early on but quickly realised that all I needed was a handful of classics. Settled on a solidbody (Tele), a Hollowbody (Casino coupe) and a campfire 'beater' (parlour acoustic). Plus a Bad Monkey OD, Rat for distortion, and more recently a very versatile and worthwhile FZ-1w fuzz. A tidy little 'old' Zoom Multistomp provides a more than adequate choice of modulation flavours and my simple Vox Pathfinder 15r doesn't drown me in amp options.
    When I caught myself GASsing for more and more gear I decided This Is Enough!
    I make the most of the gear I've got, which offers about as good if not better equivalents to what most of my guitar heroes recorded with.
    I should think now that it would be today's young aspiring/professional trailblazers who are splitting hairs over the nuances of which boutique gear best suits their micromanaged production values. However it often seems to me they're using new gear to recreate old sounds... what am I missing?

    Not to be flippant or whatnot, but could you generate your own IR's and sell them at an impulse-buy price? I do not fail to recognize that would be a lot of work. I'm just spitballing ways to invalidate subscriptions.

    Fun fact: yesterday french youtuber NeoGeoFanatic uploaded a video about swapping a great SD TB4 humbucker with a 10$ Temu pickup in the exact same guitar, and play it through the exact same gear/settings. Surprise surprise, the 10$ Temu pickup did pretty well.

    • @kmw5100
      @kmw5100 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I'll say it basically forever, boutique pickups are the absolute biggest rip off in guitar gear. If you like the options for aesthetics they offer like special covers or engravings or whatever, cool, do you. But man, especially for metal, where the amps and modellers you're going to play through have an excessive amount of gain on tap, and you're putting a tube screamer type pedal in front of it, and just all that saturation going on, the pickups are never going to matter very much especially when almost any difference you can find between two pickups can be dialed in with an EQ. But don't tell the bare knuckle fanatics that. they'll claim that they can hear the difference in scatter winding between two identical pickups.

    • @lordlemmun5216
      @lordlemmun5216 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The only issue the temu pickup might have is the waxing, which would make it microphonic if done improperly. No pickup is worth more than like $100.

    • @billbob4856
      @billbob4856 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Agreed, most of the specs I want on a guitar aren’t available in one model.
      Example: I had/have wrist issues and find 7.25” radius much easier to play over long intervals. Additionally, my parent’s basement where I used to play has fluorescent lights and they gave me a healthy appreciation for noiseless single coils. The hum was obnoxious without them. Last I checked, Fender doesn’t make any model off-the-shelf with 7.25” and noiseless for Teles or Strats.
      I also prefer a toggle for series pickup wiring in a Tele and prefer the modern US(maybe Mexico now too)wiring where the bottom tone pot can tame the bridge pickup in a Strat.
      These aren’t crazy specs imo but they just don’t come off-the-shelf in those combos.
      P.S. Anyone else having wrist issues I recommend a vertical mouse, a carpalrx brace(I didn’t buy the electric thing just the brace and wear at night) and make sure your thumb is behind you ring and middle finger as much as possible on the neck, not off in some random angle.

    For the guy who asked about Latency - check ur sample rate usually goes from 44100Hz to 192.000Hz and then check your buffer settings usually runs from 8 to 2048 samples. so start out with 44100Hz and a sample rate of 64 samples and check results then increase both until you start to get latency or find what's acceptable to you.
    2. Make sure your processor is now maxing out due to back ground programs eating CPU and RAM - this will slow everything down
    I run through a crap PC but it has lots of RAM, using a cheap Behringer UMC204HD as interface and run plugins via stand alone or Cakewalk DAW @ 44100Hz with128 sample rate and have a latency of between 2 and 3.5 ms which is nothing and it sounds great full and rich.
    3. Check the plugin settings to see if they are running at full tit - u can drop the quality level and it will not sound much different if u are just messing about
    4 make sure usb cable from interface to PC is at least USB standard 2.0 and is going into a high speed port on the computer - if the usb input on PC has a little blue line that u can see then thats a 3.0 high speed input and ur in business.

Something I do after the iLock plugins are verified online (I gotta change that) is turn the WiFi off on the computer so nothing can go online and update or look for updates while I'm mixing (looking at you AVAST!!!). It also minimises distractions.

    You’re not at fault for the price of the amps going up. That’s people just seeing your videos and getting dollar signs in their eyes (ohhh, if it’s just as good as a plexi/6505, then people are going to want it and I can squeeze some extra dollars out of it) then their shit just doesn’t sell, resulting in that price eventually dropping. You’re right, it’s just a game of patience. Also, just asking for a deal. Most of the time, people are willing to negotiate, knowing good and goddamn well that no one is going to pay what they’re asking. I.e a $400 asking price usually means “I’ll take $300”

    After watching these videos for several years, I’ve come to the conclusion that too much gain makes everything sound the same, and that I prefer something between “edge of breakup” and over the top distortion. Something that reacts to my heavy picking by adding gain, and can clean up when I pick lighter.
    I’ve also discovered I choose a guitar to use based on feel and resonance, not necessarily sound. Electronics can be swapped easily, But neck feel and body resonance can’t be. I’m sure the recorded sound isn’t affected by a dead piece of wood, but my desire to play the dead guitar isn’t there. I had a chance to pick up a nice Player P Bass for pretty cheap, but, even after set up, it just didn’t resonate through me. I DESPERATELY wanted to love the bass, but I just didn’t.
    Love the videos!! I’ve learned a lot about sound and my preferences!
    (Edit: Also, don’t you think the Soldano vs Valveking video should more accurately be titled “How to get a Soldano to sound like a Valveking” if it’s essentially dialing the best the Valveking can be and finding the setting that matches on the Soldano 😂

    Multi band compressors... Took me ages to figure out the benefit and how to use them. The best thing I did to figure it out? A lot of listening with my eyes closed. Listen for frequencies poking out at the end of a phrase. Distorted or over driven guitars are great. Listen for something poking out that catches your attention. Then start reducing the threshold and watch the compressor trigger. Then pull the gain down a couple of dB and play with the threshold until it stops poking out. Then start doing extremes just to hear it acting on the signal. Listening. Your DAW dynamic comp will be a great tool to start with. It's about listening first to help the understanding, then make the tweaks until you hear it trigger. Only then look at the plugin to start to see what the meters are doing. Ears are key with a multi band comp. Then you can do powefull things like side chaining from a vocal to pull frequencies down to keep vocals more clear. Favourite trick when there's dense guitars with vocals but then passages with just guitars. Pulls a few dB out the guitar mid range then thickens back up when no vocal.
    Reduces the need for eq and volume automation

    My guitar teacher told me years ago, there is a difference between an artist who plays guitar and a guitarist.... To an artist, a guitar, amp, pedals are the tools of the trade, to a guitarist, a guitar, amp, and pedals are a fashion statement.... And I realized that to be true when once, a guitarist came up to me and asked what chorus pedal I was using, it was a hot pink Peavey dual clock chorus, he said... "Wow, that sounds great, it's ugly though, I could never use that"

I am new to recording and am using Reaper and Studio 1. I use the stock plug ins inS1 and Free plug ins in Reaper. I use a very minimal approach to plugins. I spend more time eq ing the guitar and bass for recording so feel I don’t need many plugins. Others say I need to use them more, and use expensive ones too. Am I doing something wrong? Hey Glenn, I held the viewpoint that humbuckers largely aren't that different until I played a PRS SE Paul's guitar. I plugged in to my 6505+ and it could not handle any distortion without feeding back like crazy. It simply couldn't handle it. Had some very nice warm clean tones. Unplugged it was unusually resonant for an electric guitar, but I got my money back after one day because the thing just could not handle distortion at all. Maybe it was just a dud. Given that you make videos about pickups, this could be a great guitar for you to test to see if you run into the same problem that I did. You're a guy who tests stuff, this could make for an interesting experiment.

    Hey Glenn, this remids me of how i got my Bass Maniac bass in a thrift store. There was one in a place i visit once a week and went for 450 CHF (710 CAD). I wanted it but i did not wanted it that bad. So I'd check every week if the price dropped. Owners noticed, price went down to 350 CHF. Not great, not terrible. Brand was not know so not many people knew what they are looking at. 2 weeks later it dropped to 250 CHF (around 400 CAD). I bought it.
    Best part? the owner said he noticed me looking at it and if next time i want to negotiate the price, he is open to it because he noticed i may know a bit.
    The bass is beautiful and very good to play as well.
    Pretty much my 2 guitars (BC RIch Mockingbird and Dean Strat) as well as basses (ESP Tom Arraya signature and Bass Maniac) were absolute bargains. The Mockingbird has cost me 550 CAD (or 400 USD) because the owner... didn't like the way it sits for him... Btw each instrument runs on dfifferent strings and setup. Floyd rose, locked bridge for guitars. And flat wound and round wound for basses to get that nice versatility of use.

    Speaking about how the price of some used gear went through the roof in recent years: I have a Roland SH-3A monophonic analogue synth from 1978. I'm not a trained keyboard player but I taught myself how to play them enough to get by. It was just "laying around" the rehearsal room, so around 10 years ago I searched the internet trying to find videos of people playing it so that I could learn a few things about oscillators, filters and how to create sounds to put it to use in my band. In that search there were a few used ones on sale, all in the $300 to $400 USD range.
    Fast forward to now: I recently had a problem with a stuck portamento effect just two weeks before a concert, which turned out to be just a dirty portamento knob, but while I was "in there" I gave it a thorough check only to find that it's still in mint condition. Just out of curiosity, I went online to see if there were still any used ones on sale and how much were they selling for these days. My jaw dropped when I saw that there are people asking between $1,700 and $3,000 USD for them!!! 😲

      I learned the hard way years ago about letting a guitar acclimate. We showed up at a gig in Quebec City, after driving from Ottawa in the dead of winter, with all our gear in a 5-ton. We unloaded the truck, and I immediately opened my case. I heard a loud “snaaap”, and watched as the nitro finish on the body cracked wildly. Didn’t affect playability, but I learned to not open a case for at least an hour if it was coming from being cold into a warm building.
      Cracked rosewood fingerboards are more a product of not maintaining them, like oiling them occasionally (once a year or every six months).

    I bought a 2014 stock Epiphone Les Paul Standard and there's just nothing bad I can say about it. Growing up with lower budget guitars always being unsatisfied with playability and sound, now I'm very pleased. Is there something common I should know about that product? I often "tested" epiphone les paul standards in shops and from what I can tell there's some kind of consistency between all models I tested from 2001 until now. Maybe it's just they're not total crap but if you're just a few bucks apart from grabbing one, save a bit more and go for it. The tuning won't crap out, you get the pronounced attack that you like from your favourite songs, the palm mutes come with that set-neck little-extra-"woom!" and pinch-harmonics are way more easy to achieve. (even when I test it with old amp sims that I remember to be crappy sounding I get a way more usable tone.)
    Big time experience. I guess, that is what makes some piece of equipment special to me.
    The engineer's point of view of course demands some level of objectivity. :D

    Samson stuff is ok, but as far as wooden racks are concerned I bought a Thon 14u Oak finish rack with wheels (sold separately) it's now 170$ at Thomann, I believe it's particle board with veneer but it looks great in person, there is "some assembly required" as they say (e.g. wholes for the rack rails where not predrilled as I recall, so measure twice as they say).
    Not sure about shipping to US/Canada but I got mine from Germany to Serbia in one piece ok, so point is maybe there is no need to break the bank to have that "wood" look, also you could have them built probably for not a lot of money since standard rack rails (nuts, bolts etc) can be bought and built in any piece of furniture, just need to keep to the standard width, depth etc.

It was a big deal to save up a bit to get some used knock off of everything. So like most like that, I had to get creative and learn how to make a 200-300 guitar play and sound ok, or at least better than when I got it. If you do some digging, you can find guitars on the cheap that play well, or just need a little tlc and then will. After that saving up for a little upgrade part or two isn't that hard. I still, even though I can afford a bit more, Just won't spend big $ on something because of a name, or even more, because some artists name is on it. JMHO.

I can get a pretty decent mix, but I have reach a plato and am wanting to learn more. What are your thoughts?
    Thanks and fuck you from a Nashville punk rocker!

    Specifically about the concept of being patient, Glenn is 100 percent spot on. Seriously folks, after a great piece of gear that is kind of expensive? Put aside the money you would have spent on it, and if you live in a big enough city, the thing you want WILL pop up for a cheap price. I've never paid even close to half the cost of retail for any piece of used gear I've ever owned. Just. Be. Patient.

    The prices do go up on those great deals, but every time it happens, it's only temporary. Opportunists exist everywhere. But in the case of music gear, people know how much something is truly worth, and the opportunists eventually give up and bring their prices back down. It happened briefly with the windsor, and it happened VERY briefly with the 6505 combo. I attempted to get in on both and they both jumped in price after your videos came out lol. (To clarify, it's not just you. It has happened to sleeper gear Fluff, Kyle Bull, and Taylor Danley have covered, too)

    I haven't seen that Samson rack, but it looks a lot like the data racks I see at work. If the Samson isn't quite right, and you are looking for something more affordable than the wood furniture racks, look up racks used for computer and network equipment. They are still 19 inch racks. I have a 12U that mounted to my wall that was ~$70US. One caveat, however, you might have to deal with cage nuts for the screws, which can be frustrating when you first encounter them, but they aren't bad once you figure them out.

    i dont mind palm mutes. like, if it damps the string, it damps the string and i dont care how it does it: palm or fingers. but i do dig where you were coming from in that other vid where you knew bassists were amateurs the moment you saw them doing palm mutes. if im struggling with a song cos it's new and complex and i haven't practised damping in a while, then yeah i'll hit palm mute and it does tend to turn like 1/8th notes into 1/16th notes. now stop hating on bassists. mother says i have a great deal of potential.

    • @fallenshallrise
      @fallenshallrise 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I mean Fender Jazz basses, and many others, had dampers built in at the bridge, either foam under the bridge or foam on a cover over the bridge so that you could get a "palm muted" sound while playing fingerstyle over the neck pickup. More relevant for musical styles other than metal but all techniques are valid if they give the player what they want. Glenn is very much a clank guy when it comes to bass tones. Personal preference.

    • @geoffhead111
      @geoffhead111 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@fallenshallrise mm yeah palm muting can be a thing, if it's staccato you want. does tend to militate against the song if it needs legato. but palm muting and a fairly driving pick can be distinctive. of course it's entirely intuitive, its main virtue. i have to agree with glenn when he says its a sign of no bass chops. i sometimes kinda revert to it if the band is firing up, we're in the pocket and i want to concentrate on the groove rather than get all precious about damping

    The best way to deal with option paralysis is to self police. Decide what your goals are before you even pick up the guitar. If I want to practice scales, or develop a new technique, I go with one of my typical tones I already have saved, most likely a lead preset. If I am jamming along to our set just to keep my chops up, then I go with my presets appropriate for the songs. If I'm looking to create new sounds, then I do deep dives into my plugins and IRs. Knowing what I want to accomplish keeps me from tinkering with plugins and IRs because it gives me direction. If I pick up a guitar for the sake of picking up my guitar, I usually end up messing with tones, lol.
