    Using black instead of white, with vibrant, makes a very striking and modern look.

    I know you have been very busy on other projects, but I am so looking forward to seeing your finished Elena Quilt. As a result of your recommendation, I bought the pattern from Kitchen Table Quilting and am just finishing my second lap-size quilt top from it. The quilting will have to wait until next week. I am fortunate enough to have a home-built frame and a lovely dedicated Juki to ride on the carriage so I can stand up to quilt and don't have to pin a sandwich. I put in my time doing it the hard way and I deeply appreciate the upgrade now that I am getting older. Just wanted you to know how lucky it was for me to watch your video when I did, as now I will have two separate but color coordinated throws for wedding gifts for the bride and groom. Thanks again!

    I love the way that you do “pros and cons” of the quilt patterns that you use and why you chose them in the first place. It helps me with my own thinking process. My sister is a great quilter but she hates sashing whereas I love it. You have just clarified why I like it so much. Love from Worcestershire England.

    I made one of her patterns, the modern postage stamp quilt. I used mainly fabrics I bought at an estate sale. My plan was to learn to do sashing, but it’s ended up being my favorite quilt. I used thinner batting and it’s just perfect for a little bit of warmth while I watch tv or read.

    “A high need for a sense of accomplishment” - that is what I have too. Currently I am working on a complex pattern and I do have a really hard time walking away when I need to. It bugs the heck out of me not to sit and at least finish a block. The current project is now on 8 months old now and it’s only a throw size. I have a full time job too. Making jewelry is a lot faster but I don’t wear any jewelry 😆

      Mary---I feel very understood by this comment! Those of us who are part-time quilters (full time life!) have to make quilts in snatches of time here and there--I'm thankful there are a lot of steps that don't require hours-long sewing sessions! (even though it's what I crave!) ❤️

    Love your quilts and ideas. I also take apart shirts to add fabric to my stash. I was once in a cabin in the woods without access to a fabric store. I deconstructed two of my own on shirts and 4 large linen napkins made a lap quilt! On an unrelated note, if you’re ever looking for another hobby or passion, I think you make a great writer. Finally watching this. I love the quilt pattern. I LOVE all your brights! I don't think they clash as much as you do. Look at Kaffe Fassett fabrics and I see those same colors in his florals. I guess my eyesight is dimming, but the older I get (I'm now 66) the more I like bright colors! I'm getting this pattern too. Thanks for sharing all these great patterns. I like them because I'm a fabric collector from thrift stores or cast offs, and need patterns to accommodate my small (and sometimes weird) finds.

    I love the vibrant colors of this quilt! I have made a quilt for my husband from shirts that LOOKS like it was made from shirts, but that's what I wanted! Because they were HIS old shirts that I saved up for that reason. And he loves it. But, there are times when I use a shirt that I DON'T want it to look like a shirt. Your quilt definitely does not look like shirts. It's beautiful!

    Thanks for the link to the pattern.
    When you read the descriptions which accompany quilt photos, I've noticed many of the very busy shirt quilts with seemingly clashing prints/plaids, are memory quilts. They used the shirts grandpa had in his closet. The result may look chaotic, but every piece reminds the recipient of their loved one.
    You curate your choice of shirts so you can pick and choose fabrics that play nicely,
    Quilts can have different intentions and come from different starting points, which makes this hobby so diverse.

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are so welcome! And yes, you are very right that many shirt quilts are memory quilts; the quilt-maker has the honor (and challenge) of incorporating a whole wardrobe into one quilt, which is no small thing, and they are generally so loved by the recipients. ❤️ And I agree, too, that all of the different "intentions" and "starting points" are unique and add to the beauty of the craft! So many different viewpoints and purposes and meanings behind each quilt---what an amazing thing!
      Thank you for sharing! ❤️

    I disagree, any pattern can be used with an un determined amount of fabric. Scraps galore. Just finished one with over 150 different colors, its all in the planning, or not planning. If large blocks or wide stripes are required, sew your scraps together in a pleasing manner. It works out great. Like you said pick your palette but run with it, or not. You talked about poly blends, but have you experienced shirts with spandex? I went "shopping" today and so many great shirts had a 3% spandex content. I wonder how that would affect the use of the fabric?

      Angela, I have sewn with a couple of shirts with a low spandex count like what you mention without any significant difficulty; that said, I'm a little leery of what will happen if the cotton blocks begin to shrink over time. I guess probably nothing (LOL!) but it is a risk, I think. This is a little Captain Obvious-like, but just remember not to tug or pull or stretch it while you're sewing so it doesn't stretch (when it returns to its regular shape) and distort your piecing. 🤓 It's a great question, btw. 😊👍🏻

      @@TheCatBirdQuilts the stretch factor is exactly why I did not buy those shirts today! I got one that did not seem extra stretchy, but left a couple that felt quite flexy.

    Is this pattern easy, intermediate or difficult?

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say easy to intermediate. I've heard people describe patterns like this as "confident beginner"---it's not hard but assembling the rows on point (diagonally) can be a little challenging. The instructions are excellent, tho, and make it far easier than it might look! 🤓👍🏻

    I think that you just used lights (white) mediums (what you are calling low volume - but to my eye have all been too medium for that classification in my fabric stash) and darks.
    I'm contrary, I would have used all of those blocks, I like the questionable choices. "Why is that sone so much more medium than the others? (Otherwise the composition can have the "that's nice walk on by effect." I go to quilt shows and that is how I describe the ones that I don't study &/or question.)

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s true, many of the fabrics I used were not technically low volume…perhaps that was a poor categorization. I didn’t factor in the white in my description of the block as I considered it background. So yes, in your description a few of my mediums were too dark in my opinion.
      For the record, I did actually use all these blocks in the quilt❤️🤓; that’s part of the reason I was so thankful for the sashing, which gave enough space between them to allow for some of the more contrasting ones (orange red, bluey magenta) to still be near each other without appearing too garish. 😊👍🏻
