    I like that they added that scene of Fitzjames letting loose and engaging in adequate amounts of Tomfoolery with the men. Very much would of been in his character irl. Sucks it ended the way it did since he just wanted to give the men time to blow off steam just to watch it go up in flames. Granted he couldn’t predict Dr. Stanley trying to mass-incinerate everyone.

      The first time I read about the expedition - and Sir John's early escape from starvation by eating his boots - I said to myself, "that's a man who just doesn't listen." Given a nice neat second chance to live, what does he do but turn up back in the Arctic? So I appreciated someone yelling at him exactly what I myself thought.

    • @l.b.7028

      @@victoriadiesattheend.8478 It honestly isn't surprising considering the prestige and fame (and therefore money and good political connections) a succesful arctic expedition would get him and the other officers. For an admiral like Sir John, whose sole expertise was the command of ships, there was no similar opportunity for advancement. You also have to consider this occured during Pax Brittanica, a period where British naval dominance was unrivalled. The Royal Navy was superior to any other two navies in the world, combined. So there really wasn't much to do for them besides this that could improve an Admiral's position in society.

    I don't understand why Crozier stops the Carnivale to make his announcement about marching south. He should have waited until the men have had their fun, before stopping the whole thing so abruptly. Plus it would've prevented Dr. Stanley from burning the whole thing to the ground.... Otherwise, this whole series is an absolute masterpiece beyond words.

    • @fifthbeatle
      @fifthbeatle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Baker Street That’s a very good point. I’ve never detoxed before, let alone under such dire circumstances, (I’ve heard stories), so I can imagine Crozier feeling very disoriented and under shock. The imagery of even his senior officers losing grip of reality while under the influence was probably a nauseating experience as well.

      @@fifthbeatle I think I'm a bit more partial to the beginning of the series before they've abandoned the ships. All the conversations between Francis, James, and Sir John where they peel back the layers of their characters just totally drew me in. There are so many memorable moments though. I love watching Francis's whole arc. What about you?

    • @MrHalohunter24
      @MrHalohunter24 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Back then, military procedure was everything to the British and to see a breakdown in discipline like these was unheard of and would of terrified Crozier because it was so rigidly enforced. You didn't even go to different parts of the ship depending on your job. You stayed in your section unless ordered by an officer.

    • @unturnthisstone
      @unturnthisstone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      'Hampstead Is The Place to Ruralise' by Watkyn Williams. Maybe the song choice reveals a secret about Lt Irving, because Hampstead Heath (in north London) has long been a pickup area for gay men. Lt Irving's scared reaction to homosexuality may indicate his own repression. So we later see him tipsy, wearing angel wings and singing about "ruralising" in Hampstead! Then after that, alas, Hickey slices up his "man parts".

      Mass Hysteria. In those conditions, with everyone masked and drunk in a close space, there's no way to enforce discipline and pull rank, and it would suffice to have two idiots fighting or one guy seeing pink elephants and screaming for all of it to go to hell.

      The waste of food- he didnt yet know they would be waking out, as he never spoke to Fitzjames over the weeks he was detoxing. Also, it was very clear they were getting too carried away. I must say, while the ambience in the first room was quite uplift, you can totally tell how it's going South in every other scene. Men drunk, gossiping, no one in control (with Fitzjames and some of the other command taking a part in a weird race), two men in bathtub/pot used for cooking. I think everyone would find it a bit weird.

William Heather being spoonfed like some kind of mad king, the men in the pot and what that foreshadows (as some commenters have pointed out), but most importantly and what has dawned on me now, the sinister zoetrope at 3:06 immediately preceding the pot that heralds the eventual butchering up of some of the crew.
