ViaRail "Canadian" Train Sleeper Tour

  • I have ridden Amtrak's long distance trains several times, and I have previously put together two videos on what to expect when traveling in 'sleeper' class (first class) on the western route "Superliner" trains. Recently I took a similar trip across Canada on ViaRail's famous transcontinental train called the "Canadian", from Toronto to Vancouver. This video shows what to expect in a sleeper car on this trip, as well as presenting the trip and its sights. My trip took place in the four days immediately following Labor Day in May of 2014. The westbound train starts at 10 PM in Toronto, then continues over the next three full days and part of the morning on the fourth day, so the trip includes five consecutive dates, and occupies about 3-1/2 days (going by hours of travel).
    I forgot to mention in the video that the rooms (except for the berths) all have en-suite toilets. In the roomettes, the toilets are covered by the bed when it is lowered.

    I did this in coach during 1979. I spent the night in the observation dome by myself and played guitar while the train was snaking in the Rockies. Good memories.

    Thank you for recording this video and sharing it with us. I like that your narration was relaxed and informative. Far too many other videos I have watched theses days have very annoying narrations where the narrator never pauses to take a single breath - annoying that anyone thinks they do not need to pause for a second to breathe. Your narration was great. Thank you! I have not been on such a long train ride in either the US or Canada, it hope to one day.

    In 1971 my parents took my brother and I on a cool trip. We took the Canadian Pacific Railways trip from Vancouver BC to Montreal Canada. What a ride for a 11yr old! The porters taught us every card trick in the book! We had linens and silver at dinner. It was done the old school way. It was very cool.

    Many thanks for reviving memories of my best ever holiday( vacation). Did the same trip in 2001 with a 3 night stay in Toronto to start, followed by a 4 day stopover in Jasper. And finished off with a 5 night stay in Vancouver, my favourite city ever.

    I went on this trip about four years ago with my mother, aunt and sister in law. We had two bedroom units that were next to each other, so during the day, the raised the wall so we had a bigger room together. This is a trip of a lifetime! And for the record, I don't find anything wrong with your voice. It is relaxing!

    WOW - just discovered this and what a trip down memory lane. Thanks for taking this journey and for the excellent video and commentary. I did this trip in 1980, but I disembarked in Banff to work a season at the Banff Springs Hotel. My Dad offered to pay for my ride as my 'experience' of his having taken the trip from Saskatchewan > Toronto > Saskatchewan and back to Toronto about 10 times in his life. How times have changed from my trip - I had one of those lower, curtained berths and smoking was permitted pretty much everywhere. The showers were horrible, the track probably the same as it was laid in the 1880's and as you experienced it, and the food not much better. And the funny thing was it ran out of booze by Thunder Bay, so everyone jumped out and ran to the local 'government controlled' store to re-stock (as did the train staff). Thanks for the memories.

    It just doesn't seem fair that a nation of just about 36 million people has all that land and beauty but fortunately I'm Canadian so I'm glad we do. I was raised in the U.S. and didn't know I was also Canadian until age 60 but the good news is that I'm now retired so I have lots of time to discover my new country. I'm considering a rail trip and your video helped me to decide that it is the best option to see a lot of the country. Thanks for posting.

I remember this shiny Superliner train was totally refurbished to become Canada's proud "Canadian !" The effort and work involved and cost to maintain this fantastic train shows Canada's proud train heritage ! To maintain this track over some of the most remote area's of North America and the Canadian Rockies is a feat in itself ! Well Done Canada's ViaRail ! Cheers !

    Enjoyed your video. I have travelled on 'The Canadian' 25x since 1964 (round-trip except for the 1st one. Originally, the seats in the 'roomettes' & dome were cloth-covered. The bar under the rear dome had original paintings by the famous 'Group of Seven' & were heavily damaged because people were allowed to smoke back in the old days. I managed to get a really good picture of the top of Mount Robson that is about 50 mi west of Jasper using a pre-digital SLR with a 300mm zoom & 400 asa film. Whats is amazing is that there was not a cloud in sight. Apparently it is only visible about 6 days/year. It is usually cloud-covered. It is amazing that the 'Canadian' starting running in 1955 & is still going back & forth across Canada. The dining cars have changed very little. The glass dividers with the etchings are original! Thanks again for posting your video. Canadian Don

    Thank you for sharing your traveling experience on the train from Toronto to Vancouver. I haven't been on a train like that in 30 years since 87 when I went to my brother's house for Christmas and got to meet my nephew for the first time. And believe me even back then there were no smoking on the train and I was heading down east to Saint John NB. I remember some of us sneaking off to smoke between the cars pass the sliding glass doors just to grab a quick smoke before a train steward chased us back to our seats. Lol 😉😂 Anyways thanks again for sharing your your experience traveling across Canada on a train, perhaps next time you could go the other way take the train Down East and go to the Atlantic Provinces. But don't go in the winter time. It's frigging cold! Lol 😉😂

    Keep in that the cars used on the Canadian are refurbished ex-CPR cars that date from the 50s. The fact they work as well as they do is remarkable, even if they don't quite measure up to much younger AmTrak cars.

    Those cars were built by The BUDD Company in Phildephilia, talk about being vintage. Pullman Standard cars were the standard for first-class service, BUDD Company was the first with stainless steel long haul and subway/elevated cars. The cars you are riding and walking through were built in 1955 in Philadelphia for Canadian Pacific's The Canadian passenger train. On April 3, 1987, Budd ended all railcar production at its Red Lion Plant in Philadelphia and sold its rail designs to Bombardier Transportation. Glad to see them again. Here in the US, Amtrak pulled most of their BUDD cars off the western routes when Pullman Standard built the Superliner cars in the mid/late 1970s, by the early 1980s they were only eastern routes that still used them due to the low tunnels and other over track structures. BUDD built the prototypes for the Viewliner cars but shut their rail car division down when Amtrak awarded the contract to Morrison-Knudsen to build what today is known as the Vierwliner I cars.

  • @sean6975
    @sean6975 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I have taken both the Canadian and Emtrak's Empire builder. While Amtrak provides a more modern train, the Canadian is nostalgia. Which you fail to recognize in your video. The stainless steel cars, the dome car, which are part of train travelling glory days. And they are the only rail service that provide that. I do agree that ride in states is a smoother. I do have to say that the food on the Canadian is top notch. Restaurant quality, or better. Amtrak's was sub par, at best. Riding the Canadian was more about the adventure, as opposed to the final destination.

      @@youtuuba I think you bought your ticket at the wrong time - check Via's "Sleeper Plus Deals", Toronto to Vancouver in a sleeper with meals included can be had for about $1100 CDN, or about $800 US - I don't think you can go from NYC to San Francisco, a similar distance, in sleeper class for the same price. Timing is everything of course, you have to be flexible.

    • @youtuuba
      @youtuuba  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tonyd8499 , I fully understand that timing, especially with AMTRAK, can mean dramatic cost differences. Regarding my ViaRail "Canadian" trip, I recall paying about $1600 for it, and being surprised at the high cost considering that I was only in the equivalent of an AMTRAK roomette. I had purchased my ticket two or three months in advance, and the reservation agent said that the "Canadian" train was a premium priced trip because it was so desirable.
      When you did your pricing mentioned in your comment, was it just for "sleeper", or for a particular kind of room? Remember, unlike AMTRAK, the "Canadian" also offers "berths" in the sleeper car, which gets you a seat and a bed, but not a private room.... Was that perhaps what you priced out?
      Regarding your question of comparison with a Chicago to San Francisco trip (presumably this would be AMTRAK's "California Zephyr", I have taken that trip several times, as recently as two years ago, and never paid more than about $600 (US) for it, in a sleeper Roomette.

    • @tonyd8499
      @tonyd8499 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@youtuubaThe SleeperPlus Deal I referenced was for a single bedroom posted online a few weeks ago. Section berths are half the cost, double bedroom with single occupancy are 50% more, and Prestige bedrooms are astronomically priced but include all the alcohol you can consume in four days and preferred access to the tail-end Park lounge-dome car. They used to have triple bedrooms which were almost double the size of double bedrooms but lost them when those cars were converted to Prestige sleepers. I’ve haven't seen Amtrak prices as low as what you mentioned, but I guess you have to know where to look, and again timing is everything. VIA still sells out the "Canadian" in the summer high season, the best time to go is winter or early spring. I'll be on it April 3rd.
      The Zephyr is a two night, 2000 mile trip, the Canadian is 3500 miles over four nights, so it's not a good comparison. Both are excellent trips by the way, though I agree with your earlier comment that the scenery on the Zephyr is superior.

    I was lucky enough to ride on the original California Zephyr and Denver Zephyr. I've also ridden the AMTRAK Superliners. The views from the Vista Dome cars on the Zephyrs were absolutely spectacular and far beyond anything offered by the Superliner lounge cars.

    Great Video, I did the trip this past summer. This brought back great memories and clarified some things I didn't know. The one thing I noticed though was that you didn't film the panorama car which was my favourite car which is added onto the train in Edmonton. It gave amazing views during the mountains and was as nice as the views in rocky mountaineer's Gold Leaf cars. Hopefully you were able to visit it.

    Comparing the Canadian (VIA rail) to Amtrak is like comparing french fries to onion rings. Both are good depending on your choice. I've ridden both. Amtrak's Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle and back and the Canadian from Vancouver to Toronto. Both were great in their own right. I had no complaints about either one

    So glad you came to Canada! Next time, stop in Jasper and drive down the Glacier Parkway to get up close and personal with mountains bigger and more beautiful than around Jasper. Visit the Athabasca Glacier and the Continental Divide along the parkway, Lake L9uise and Banff. Then head back to Jasper to board the train again to head west and watch for Mount Robson this time. I didn't see it mentioned in your video and If you are lucky the mountain top won't be covered by cloud (it is so high it has its own weather system. And the schedule has changed on the train so you arrive in Jasper around 6 or 7 am and that allows you to see the amazing views of the Fraser Canyon when you head west. Sorry you didn't have a bedroom, roomettes are rather cramped. They do now have a new class called Prestige now though, you would greatly enjoy.

    I see you were assigned to the sleeper "Elgin Manor." This was the same car used in the filming of the 1976 movie Silver Streak, starring Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. The movie used Canadian Pacific rolling stock for its fictitious "AmRoad" train. If you watch the movie and look carefully, the name Elgin Manor appears on the door to Gene Wilder's sleeping car, as well as on the outside. He was in a full-sized bedroom. The interior, of course, has been refurbished since then, so the color scheme is now different. Just an interesting trivia tidbit.

      I love Canadian Movie trivia. When I was visiting downtown Vancouver I saw this map of Stanley Park that shows all the movies that have filmed there, and where exactly they took place, which is pretty cool because then you can go right to the very same spots and take pictures, or recreate scenes (Yes, I would totally do that, I am so that nerd).

    An interesting video. It's too bad officious, know-it-all twits like Dusty Coutu can never seem to restrain themselves. Oh well, that's just one facet of the internet. As for your narration, it strikes me as polished. And as you report, it is an expensive trip. You may find this hard to believe but in 1985 it was possible to travel for 30 days on ViaRail for just over 300 dollars on a Canrail Pass and on both CNR and CPR transcontinental routes, the CPR route being generally regarded as the more scenic. That didn't include sleeping accommodation or food, of course, but an upper berth went for $13.00 (yes, that decimal point after the 3 is correctly placed!) if bought after 10 PM on the train. It makes 1985 seem like a very long time ago. More recently something similar was available valid for travel on both Via and Amtrak, but possibly no longer. It did seem too good to last.
    I covered about 17,000 miles over 30 days on a Canrail Pass including a (slow) trip to Churchill, Manitoba. Of course, I'm amazed now that I actually survived those miles considering the life-threatening danger of so frequently overhearing the crew's radio communications even without a scanner.
    I appreciate the trouble you took to present this video. (In 1985 I noticed an American passenger involved in the same sort of thing. His camera, at that time, was the type carried on one's shoulder and a climb with it up into the dome just about did him in. I guess 1985 really was a long time ago. Enjoy your future rail travel.

    Well covered. Scenery, often the rationale for travel, is important. However, its enjoyment can be profoundly affected by the mode of travel. In my book, they're equally important. It's easy to become familiar with a region's scenic appeal, but not so easy to find reasoned and dispassionate accounts of the means of travel. I appreciate your contributions to that aspect of a classic North American rail journey.

    I rode this train after the NMRA convention in Toronto a few years ago. What better way to end a model train convention than a train ride? I, like you, spent most of my time in one of the dome cars. One thing you didn't mention is that this train is the only transportation in some of Canada. There were frequent flag stops where campers got on and off the train with all their gear, including canoes and kayaks. It was a fun trip and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

    Thank you so much for putting together such a thorough and useful video. Your clear voice is very for good narration and your camera work presented a very good glimpse of what life would be like on that trip. I am thankful to have seen this video. I have to say that the trip looks really wonderful and I would to go on it, but I don't think I could take those very long narrow passageways in the roomette cars...way too claustrophobia-inducing for me. It was almost panic inducing just sitting here in the comfort of my own home watching those portions of your video...and it looked like you had to get through three of them in order to finally get out there! I feel that the sleeping room wouldn't provide much relief from that feeling. I've travelled long-distance trains with my own sleeping compartment in Germany, Sweden, and Mexico, and those trains didn't seem to have those not-even-as-wide-as-a-person passageways. Or else I've become squeamish in my old age. Honestly, I was planning on booking this trip, but from seeing those hallways and the sleeper room, I really don't think I could take that and therefore I greatly thank you for saving me quite a bit of money and angst!

    I liked your video, it isn’t the usual « gee whiz » kind. Got the close caption going and you should look into some of it, particule « Hornepayne » . someone should have told you that, in Canada, « freight » runs the show and VIA Rail is the poor cousin. Unfortunately as well, VIA doesn’t run though the prettiest part of Alberta anymore since 1990, it’s political. Before, the train hit the Canadian Rockies 30 minutes out of Calgary, now, it’s 6 hours out of Edmonton. I took the trip several times and VIA is not what CPR was in the days, CN was a always lousy and business-like and that’s what you got. Hope you enjoyed the trip anyway. And thanks for an informative video. I’ve been A rail enthusiast for 60 years.
