    Rocker is lift in the bow & stern at the keel line, not the sheer line.....you’re off your rocker!😂

    Great basic intro. Wish I had seen this before I first got involved. Either way, these are items anyone that paddles more than a few times will want to learn, and internalize. I think you misspoke about Rocker, you said "along the top", whereas it doesn't matter the shape of the top, except the amount of wind it catches. Rocker is the curvature of the bottom.

    So for tripping in Algonquin that will be done solo and my dog for up to 10 days what do you think is a good choice? A 16 would be fine or too big and from what you are saying is a flat bottom with little rocker may be best?

    • @ruggedoutdoorsguide9904
      @ruggedoutdoorsguide9904 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Algonquin trips are totally fine with a 16-foot tandem canoe (assuming it's just you and your dog with all your gear). If you keep the dog towards the front along with some gear, it should balance out pretty well. I'd go for very little rocker if you're mostly on flat water, and any outfitter will provide the best option which is a kevlar, asymmetrical canoe that's light, very little rocker and is wide enough at the 16-foot length to have a big dog, 1 person and all the needed gear. That's my 2 cents! Cheers,

    Great candid video! Love the format where you just shoot out important information. What’s a good hull design for something like Lake Tahoe where they have some light swells? Thx mate

    Steve you really need to work on your presentation.
    Rocker: think of this as the rails of a rocking chair. the more the curve the easier it is to pivot.
    hull shape: the more rounded, the more the canoe acts as a weeble-wobble (poor initial stability good secondary stability or recovery from a wobble) VS flat bottom which is more like a coffee mug....strong initial stability- 'hard to tip over'/ poor secondary stability 'when it does START to tip, its going to be hard to stop' characteristic.
    a Keel is a another component to some canoes(long ridge that on bottom of boat that runs the bow to stern. a good open water/large lake canoe will have this. it makes a canoe track straight, though it adds a little drag. you will see these on many aluminum Grumman and Alumi-craft type canoe brands.
    the prospector/tripper type Canoe Steve has here is a best compromise of all characteristics. this shape does everything well (not the best at any one thing, more a Jack of all trades).
    lastly, consider where the canoe will be stored. if its an outdoor canoe.....aluminum Grumman or similar is the #1 choice to get 'your feet wet' into Canoeing. used they are between $100-$400 and will last 2 lifetimes outside. triple poly (strong polymars) canoes are a good choice too. Old Town is probably the best deal in used canoes $400-$600 range
    I myself use a Old Town Tripper made of Royalex (GREAT boat).

    as a canadian i inherited my family's worst canoe when i turned 19. It's 12 feet long, has a flat bottom, but is only 30 inches wide, and for some reason has 2 seats. even my 12 year old daughter finds it extremely tippy. it stinks.
