@@1MinuteFlipDoc I have several, and I have experienced some that worked (still work) well out of the box, and I have 2 that are just filled with spurious splatter on transmit.
My rant is more about the User Experience.
If gaining new hams and keeping them excited in this hobby/service I feel that having a functional, and catchy UX is key.
If larger and older radio manufacturers use a spiffy, cross platform UX that is easy to use and still keep the price affordable they can gain a lifetime fan

This is a replacement for the Icom IC-T70A which was discontinued for sometime. The T70A used the superhet while this T10 uses direct conversion like the Baofengs. I hope this will have better front end filtering.

Direct conversion is going to be a huge turn off for alot of us. Especially considering that's what most $30 radios use. i dont have high hopes for it. I may just have to buy one to compare it next to my Anytone 878.

  • @maddogintheair
    @maddogintheair 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Looks like iCom used most of the parts from their base line air and HT and made a ham radio. If they price it low enough this should be a great radio.
Yaesu did a similar thing where the FT-65 shares a lot of the parts with the FTA-250. It’s a great air band transceiver and the FT-65 keeps most of the same features.

Does that mean I'll be able to listen on some frequencies but I can't transmit on them? I just looked up this radio and it's the same thing, the RX range looks great, right in the range I would want but I don't want to order it if I can't transmit on those channels aswell. Wiki: The Radio Amateurs' Emergency Network, also known as RAYNET, is a British national voluntary communications service provided by amateur radio operators. It was formed in 1953 and exists to supplement national communication channels in the event of an emergency. The capitalised word RAYNET is now a registered trademark of the RAYNET-UK organisation. What's old is new again. I like it. Bummer that it doesn't have 220 in it, but I like the single monitor, dual band, commercial design. If they sell for $175 or less I'm buying one. Nothing fancy, simple display, mic and speaker on the top half as it should be, what's not to like? I dig it. Do I need another HT? Nope. Can it serve as a backup radio to the other HTs I have? Certainly. While it is nice that iCom has their new ID52A for those of us who use DSTAR, and Yaesu has their FT5D for Fusion / WIRES-X, both are great, but some might think they are way too expensive for the guy who doesn't need or want all the bells and whistles, but wants only to access his local repeater and not break the bank doing so. I saw a company called ABBREE and they have two handhelds and one is advertised to go up to 660 MHz and cover part of the airband although it's FM throughout so I don't know how well it will work on the airband
The coverage is extensive on at least one of the models and I am really hoping someone will come up with a way to modify the firmware to allow transmitting up in the 900 MHz band or at least reception above 660 through the 800 and 900 bands
What would make the radio a real home run would be if they had a mode button that would allow you to switch from FM to AM to allow you to transmit on the CB bands

    • @farmhousehamradio4774
      @farmhousehamradio4774 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@farmhousehamradio4774 I spoke with the company prior to purchasing several of their radios and the main reason that I bought them was because they had this clone ability where if another radio is transmitting you can scan and it will copy the frequency and the ctcss or DCS tones into memory in the abbr e e radio
What I found is that the frequency is off by about 1.5 MHz to 1.75 MHz but I can live with that
Prior to buying them I asked the company if there was any way to open up the reception in the areas where it said there were gaps
They told me that it was not possible
Now here's something I probably should not say because they're probably going to fix this if they don't already know that the radio does this:
The bottom range is not 125 MHz as stated
      It is actually 20 MHz
The coverage is extensive, all the way to 136hz receive only
This gives you the low band and the 54 MHz band and the 72 MHz band Plus it looks like there is continuous coverage from 136 to 660 MHz for both transmit and receive.
I would love to figure out a way to read the firmware out of this radio and see if I can change the bite value to open up up into the 800 band
I'm guessing that they designed this quickly and didn't put in the safeguards to prevent transmitting on all of these other bands where normally you would never have access like the 200 MHz, 300hz
There are quite a few radios that do 350 MHz to 550 MHz but this is the first one I've ever seen that has access to the TV channel ranges
I'm sure it's a glitch and they will fix it but in the meantime I'm going to buy up a bunch of these especially since I want to play around with the firmware and see if I can modify it
I was able to modify Motorola Max tracks to get 800 band Motorola's to get into the 896 to 950 MHz range
I get the feeling these radios will be a lot easier than a Motorola and they probably don't even have a check bit

A few departments an hour or two away from me still use 500mhz analog.
It's nice that the Leixen 898 and UV-5X3 receive that, but more of the newer radios are just topping out at 470 or 480.
Which is a shame because these newer radios tend to have higher channel capacities.
Some radios are also annoying with frequency step.
Like not being able to go below 5.0k.
Or lack of broadcast wideband for 900mhz where there's studio links up around 940 if I remember correctly.

1500mw is the specification for the audio amplifier, not necessarily the speaker. Although they say, "large speaker", that is not a indication that it is somehow going to sound good. I'm not expecting hifi sound, but so many of these small HTs have awful (tinny, buzzing, distorted) sound. It's obvious that little thought goes into sound engineering. Kenwood may be the exception.

If it can be competitive price wise with the wouxun line of radios, it may be worth a look. However, if they market this for any more than 180 bucks, they may not sell as well as they could. It is considered simplistic in design by today's standards and we shouldn't be upcharged just for the name. Think of it like this, there are various dmr radios on the market that would outperform this radio in a heartbeat for well under 200 bucks. I feel they will ask to much for to little and the new hams will revert to the "radios on a chip" type radios just because of cost.

People complain about "cheap Chinese junk". I'm complaining about "overpriced Japanese junk". Don't compare this to Icom's newest HT. Instead, ask how this stacks up against a $35 Baofeng or similarly-inexpensive HT. What does the T10 do that the Baofeng/TYT/Anytone/etc. don't do? I don't care about the brand name. I care about functionality. I'm certainly open to learning about its features vs price and I'll make my final judgment then. But if the brand name is the only lure, they've lost me.
This HT may stomp the **** out of the cheap Chinese stuff. If that's the case, I'd really like to know the details!!

This looks like an amateur radio built off of an older Icom commercial chassis and case. I use Icom commercial radios and they have worked well for me. That said, one of the absolutely STUPID things that all of the Japanese radio manufacturers do with nearly all of their amateur radio offerings is to make them available with only a minimum 5 kHz tuning step. That is fine for pure amateur use, but many amateur radio owners also use their amateur radio to monitor public service and commercial frequencies that, since narrowbanding way back in 2013, may use "splinter" frequencies that require 2.5 kHz tuning steps. I checked--this "new" IC-T10 has a minimum tuning step of 5 kHz--so Icom blew it on that. Considering that a lot of commercial and amateur radios now share the same basic chassis between a commercial and amateur model, I would guess that the tuning step setting is likely just a firmware function. Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu, etc. need to wake up and offer amateur radios with 2.5 kHz tuning step as a tuning step option. Even the copycat Chinese have figured that one out long ago.
