Love this project!❤ You could include a gold paint pen in the room and guests that stay with you could add their names to the spines. And then they would be...guest books.😂😂😂
Fun fact(?)! Adhd people have something called "object consistency," which is similar to, but not the same as, object permanence in babies. We understand that a thing/person contunues to exist outside of our observation of it, but it becomes difficult to impossible to access the information about it when not interacting with it directly. This disconnect is worsened by other cognative pressures such as time limits. So thats why when you ask an adhd person (or sometimes anyone at all) what their favourite movie is they completely blank. Also why door and drawers are the enemy of remembering what stuff you already have
If I ask myself where something is, I have no idea...but if my kids ask me where something is, it's in "the mom dimension" and I know exactly where it is. Wild.
this thought came to me randomly in this video but just letting you know i'd watch the fuck out of a lower key video of craft upkeep where you just do little things you mention wanting to change at the end of your products. like "oh let's try again with the tumnus hooves and then fix this book that sticks out to me and mend this one sewing project that fits weird" etc. you've been killing it with videos and projects lately but i'd absolutely watch just you getting to right some of the things you seem disappointed with when you're rushed by a video schedule !!!
This project was FANTASTIC, wonderful. Great way to use left over rubbish. I suggest it now needs a small felted mouse or frog sitting on top, reading a minature book.
Rachel… I beg of you… you can’t just inspire me to suddenly want to build a whimsical book stack when I am MID PACKING TO MOVE- It turned out absolutely amazing though! 🤩
I was literally just sitting here thinking "I could really use a Rachel video right now" and low & behold a new video had posted 2 minutes before! You're so cute & silly, and make me smile. Which is kinda hard when there's 8" of snow in Oklahoma & you have to get up in the morning to go to work. I may just have to watch again for the whimsy of it all!
"You're right, no human being would stack books like this." Arguing with yourself over a bit is absolutely peak content. That made my day. Also, I'd like to think we'd be better friends over your trivia experience...I felt that strongly. Turned out great! The spines look really good, perfectly whimsical and painterly.
The absolute level of “whimsy” this video has is “palpable” (to quote Ms. Maksy)! Plus, you actually arguing with yourself was just “chefs kiss” perfect!! Thank you for being you!!!!
The feminine urge to make a stack of books that's as tall as I am. This is *amazing* and I want. I have no place for such a glorious item, nor near enough materials or time (or ability or patience or energy, or etc). There is also the desire to have some of the paper sections be drawers for the storage of things. Additionally, the little rabbits you painted were really adorable and for some reason I found them very touching. Like, they made me feel quietly emotional in a pleasant, nostalgic way? IDK, brains are weird.
I, too, LOVED the bunnies 🐰 As you were saying you had "no room", it sprang to mind you could hang a stack from the ceiling (as long as you kept the weight low!) Stalactite & stalagmites of BOOKS !!! 📖 📕 📘 📗 📓 📚
the bunnies were ADORABLE!!! i loved them so much too omg reading your comment instantly reminded me of "the runaway bunny" by margaret wise brown, specifically in connection to joanna newsom's "baby birch". INCREDIBLY devastating song, faraway from that pleasant nostalgic vibe, but the mention of emotionality HIT cuz REAL! the gold leaf rabbits were
If you want to do more of them, you might consider looking at some of the "used books" for it rather than making the individual books. I've seen similar things made out of sets of outdated encyclopedias and similar that the various libraries, essentially, discard to replace and having different sets adds variety to it. A cloth cover and a drill to go through for your core piece for it. A friend of mine made a lot of those as set dressing for various stage plays. Either wrapping them in newer cloth covers, painting them, or using decoupage layers to make them look different between them.
That could work, it's true. However, part of the purpose of this project was to use up spare materials she already had lying around: foam, cardboard, fabric, etc. Also, real books are heavy, foam and cardboard are lightweight. So it'd be a different sort of project. But for someone who liked the idea and wanted to try their hand at it- using up old no-longer-needed books could give them a second life: not a bad idea!
Soooo, my state is currently burning down to the ground, so I needed a little whimsy! My fellow Maksyteers, I hope wherever you are, you are having a good Friday. Stay sexy and sassy y'all.
I know this may not be your intention but you help me so much with figure out how to execute props for theatre lol 😂 all of your little experiments and DIYs really help me plan my own lol
This is so awesome! I really love how you use your trash and make something creative and cool instead of throwing into a landfill. The spines look amazing! This project is whimsical and charming! Well done you!
The grand reveal is amazing 😻These book stacks could be attached to ends of room dividers, like a library faux material in between looking like bookshelves, or having a headboard in between with lamps or led candles and candleholders on top. Rachel the book designs were so creative, loved them.Three cheers for reaching new heights 😄
If you are in the Massachusetts area, the Cambridge Typewriter company is closing due to the owner retirement. Might be able to buy the business!? (Actually located in Arlington, Mass - cheaper rent than Cambridge!)
The book stack is mesmerizing. My brain is simultaneously perceiving it as a real stack of books and as a piece of interactive animation. Like if Rachel somehow managed to stand next to a stack of books from a Studio Ghibli movie. Or like the human-cartoon world of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. 🤯
Every once in a while your projects give me anxiety and then you pull it off so well and it turns out awesome. It also inspires me to push past the weird phases of a project and just keep going! ❤
If you do loose your resolve and make another stack using spray adhesive for the fabric will help with the wrinkling. Spray it on the fabric then apply like adhesive contact.
In the future, you should consider breaking up a project like this into two separate videos. That way, you don't have to put pressure on yourself to hurry to meet the deadline and make the project more stressful. The book stack is creative and looks well put together. Great job 👏
As someone with an alarmingly large "to read" pile of books, I was very confused as to why you wouldn't just make a book stack out of actual books. That is, until Rachel explained the goal was to clear out the foamy Trash Stash. This is the craft version of Leftovers Night but with very cool results instead of dinner.
I decided to bind and dremmel and gold leaf a few wooden book boxes for sneaky secret storage on my bookshelf. When I tell you I quit immediately after getting the fabric on. I have three half finished ones just waiting for me to finish them. For two years now.
i was thinking Belle from Beauty and the Beast the whole time, but then with the canvas background and outfit at the end it’s also very Jane from Tarzan! so cute, and a great addition to that space in the room. and a great way to use scrap materials! ❤
I think an interesting idea would be recycling some pieces you aren’t into keeping anymore. I dunno how many fabric crafts you have that just collect dust instead of being worn but it’d be cool to see them upcycled or broken down for parts and reused into something you like more!
Brilliant! You ARE Laura Craft, superwoman, adventurer, crafter extraordinaire!😅❤ May I suggest.... if you want more book stacks, make a book each week or every few days to minimize tedium while making progress. The spines look wonderful!❤
Lovely video as always. And the Lara Craft joke. I needed that, lol. After being snowed in at a relatives house for roughly a couple of days, I needed that laugh..
Fantastical book stack! I like how aged the paper appears from the painting and texturing. This prop would fit in a wizard's study or witch's cottage or mad scientist's lab or eccentric professor's library. As far as I'm concerned, Ferris Bueller is the only character in that movie who even *has* a name.
I was lucky and saw Matilda live last year and was obsessed with the giant book props but had no idea how to start! I’m so doing this! 💛 it looks so COOL!
I love this project!!! Making books using up your leftovers from previous projects is genius. It's a great way to stash bust. I think you should do more in different sizes both of books and stacks. Ironically my library at home has many stacks of books. This project is probably my favourite ever.
It's been a very _long_ day of cooking, cleaning & sewing. Is THIS the perfect excuse to stop for the night? You know, halt all life progress & procrastinate with our good, para social friend, Rachel? You bet your salt stained, slush wet, pants _and_ boots, it is! 😂😂❤❤❤
A year or so ago I had to make a bunch of fake books to fill up a bookshelf for a stage version of "Clue." This past October I made more fake books for "Young Frankenstein- the Musical"s infamous revolving bookcase. Making fake books can be a lot of fun! But making a lot of anything becomes tedious very quickly! So I totally get your experience. This turned out SO whimsical! Always a pleasure to see your work. Good stuff, using up your trash stash- that's more or less what I did, too: much insulation foam, much cardboard, much scraps of matboard, much hot glue, much paint.
It is super cute!! Very whimsical, for sure 🎉 I have many random stacks of books, in various stages of " they are falling if you look at it sideways"!! All over my sitting room. The good part is, I read them all. The bad part is , 6 months ago I built 2 tall bookcases for them and promised to to go through my books and put in the book cases or donate them. Well it's 10 day's into 2025 and I have added books and broken my promise 😢 I am going to try to muster up your get it done MOJO and... well I will let you know lol. Great job 👏 it looks awesome. ❤
I haven't seen these before, really neat. I am creating a mini library right now and hope to use these techniques to my book making. I love the book spine designs, too!
I've got one of those WORX brand drills, with the switch-drive. I've found that as power drills go it's not the most powerful- very much a light-duty tool, not a heavy carpentry jobber. Luckily, most of what I do is on the lighter side, so it works out. The swappable bit holder is super handy for having a drill bit for the pilot hole and a driver bit to drive the screw. Also if I'm doing a project where someone has used different kinds of screws- like some Phillips, some square, or some square, some hex, etc- having two options at my fingertips without having to swap bits in and out is convenient. Enjoy your new toy; let us know how it works for you! (no pun intended, but I'm never one to turn down a pun, so you can have that.)
So fun! I like that you didn't adhere them in place, as you can twist some of the books in the stack, take them out and flip them or, if you make other stacks, mix in different sizes, to make it all the more "precarious" and whimsical. Kind of like Merlin's library in Sword in the Stone...of course then you'll have to make Archemides the owl....
I luv this. I luv books....Wait....I have trash....I'm making this, but where to put it? (2 minutes later0 I Know Where To Put It!!!! MUWAAAAAHHHHH!!!! I may get the side eye from hubby when these start popping up all over the house, but they will be out of the way so he will learn to luv them. Keep up the good work, Empress Crafy Pants. 💙
Rachel, just want to say you could upload the simplest tiniest little craft and we would love it. You could post a video literal weeks late and we are still going to watch it. I hate seeing you on the verge of a menty b!! We will still be here if you need to take extra time to finish or if you need to break up a project into two parts. Don’t kill yourself over this. We love you and will watch whatever you put out whenever you put it out. Take care of yourself ❤️❤️
This is so cool. I kinda wanna start doing that. Also, I like you decided to make videos that are in different parts instead of one massive long video. I feel like it’ll be a lot easier on you and I think it’ll be cool to see a little series of different.
This is such a fun project! It makes me want to figure out a way to do it with a bunch of different sized stackable drawer units, so some or most of the "books" can be usable hidden storage. As always, the editing was lovely! Your videos are so fun to watch and rewatch!
Gorgeous sculpture! I feel you about the pain of having to do the same thing over and over til it's done. That's one reason I feel like the algorithmic timeline of making is so hard, specially for neurodiverse artists. I do tiny bursts of activity very spaced out, working on multiple projects or my brain just can't cope. Okay, well my brain can't cope ANYWAY, but you know what I mean.
I can so imagine this in the corner of your studio with 2 other book stacks and maybe even more in another corner too to really add that fantasy mage vibes with what you already have going off as any time you see a magical person in anything they always have books stacks all over the place... ohh and candles as well as which the image of books everywhere with fake light up candles on them and around them just looks so cosy in my mind.
It looks lovely! Maybe next time to cut the repetition of labor you had to do with each book, you could make the lines of the pages when its still i a big sheet, and prefold the book cover edges before gluing to the foam?

Names of the guests as "author", and they get to choose the title. Extra points for nerdy easter eggs!
Omg this is such a fun idea!
I really agree! You should do this!

This is so cool to know. My ADHD was keeping that from me.
Aaaand that's why I've lived nearly 40 years with most of my stuff in laundry baskets or piled on the couch. Otherwise it doesn't exist.
If I ask myself where something is, I have no idea...but if my kids ask me where something is, it's in "the mom dimension" and I know exactly where it is. Wild.

i’d LOVE this kind of video! like the “mend pile” clothes video she did a while ago, but for previous crafts!!
I love this idea so much.
this should be a widespread maker trend!
Such a wonderful idea!
Mother Maksy your house is slowly morphing into a scene from June's Journey and I love that for you!
This project was FANTASTIC, wonderful. Great way to use left over rubbish. I suggest it now needs a small felted mouse or frog sitting on top, reading a minature book.

watching you paint the spines with the gilding paint was lovely and whimsical af omg
It was so satisfying! It made me want to get some and paint something!
Rachel… I beg of you… you can’t just inspire me to suddenly want to build a whimsical book stack when I am MID PACKING TO MOVE-
It turned out absolutely amazing though! 🤩
nothing better than opening my sub feed and seeing "5 seconds ago" on a Rachel Maksy video lmao
This with a lamp in place of the dowel would absolutely slap
Seconding this!🌟
You could probably use a length of PVC pipe and run wire through it for a lamp.....
Some finally using a "nice box". Proving us all correct in saving them.

You too, Carvylover....be happy and gleeful this weekend.
Be safe, friend, and your neighbors, far and wide.
As a bookbinder, this one was special for me. I love it and want to make one! ✨
Would you wrap the fabric onto a stiff paper?
I know this may not be your intention but you help me so much with figure out how to execute props for theatre lol 😂 all of your little experiments and DIYs really help me plan my own lol
Right? I work in theatre too, and almost all of the stuff she does is SO transferable to theatre: props, sets, costumes, etc.
This is so awesome! I really love how you use your trash and make something creative and cool instead of throwing into a landfill. The spines look amazing! This project is whimsical and charming! Well done you!
It is officially the weekend, Rachel has uploaded with a whimsical craft

Great ideas!😊
Hi Rachel! You inspired me to get back into my hobby of restoring vintage typewriters in the New Year!
If you are in the Massachusetts area, the Cambridge Typewriter company is closing due to the owner retirement. Might be able to buy the business!?
(Actually located in Arlington, Mass - cheaper rent than Cambridge!)
So charming! ❤ The little paintings on the spine was the best part! Looks so good!!

I agree. We can wait and we're not really here for the finished product anyway. Its the Rachel journey not the craft destination.
As a bookbinder, this was a satisfying video. What a cool concept Rachel!
As someone with an alarmingly large "to read" pile of books, I was very confused as to why you wouldn't just make a book stack out of actual books. so cute, and a great addition to that space in the room. and a great way to use scrap materials! ❤
Something about those dremeled pages makes me so happy. Another amazing video- thank you!
It's cute, it's whimsical, it's Hobbit-y, and I love it. Turned out great!
Oh! Speaking of Hobbit-y...should there be some cookbooks in the stack..." Recipes for First Breakfast," etc.?😊
I think an interesting idea would be recycling some pieces you aren’t into keeping anymore. I dunno how many fabric crafts you have that just collect dust instead of being worn but it’d be cool to see them upcycled or broken down for parts and reused into something you like more!

YESS 🥰 I love that your home is turning into various Disney imagineered environments and queues and such, what a dream!! 💖🤍💖
Aw, Rachel, this is so nice! Reminds me of the wizard’s tower in Sims Medieval. Stacks upon stacks, please! You are the greatest foam librarian 🤓📚📚📚
Love it! It's giving me Hogwarts and Hobbit vibes with a touch of Dr Seuss 🤟🇨🇦

Never has anything so perfect ever been spoken. 💋

I have this thought every time I see Nick mentioned in a video... Nick is the best. And I stand by that
My intrusive thoughts IMMEDIATELY wanting to knock it over to how it sounds 📚🤭📚 Sometimes think I may be part Cat 😁
It turned out so cool! Love the idea of breaking down big projects into separate smaller projects/videos. Should be less stressful for you too!!
Wake up babe new Maksy video just dropped
Excited to see everything you get into and stuff you learn in 2025. Hope you're doing well and that you and your family enjoyed the holidays. ❤
It's been a very _long_ day of cooking, cleaning & sewing. Is THIS the perfect excuse to stop for the night? You know, halt all life progress & procrastinate with our good, para social friend, Rachel? You bet your salt stained, slush wet, pants _and_ boots, it is! 😂😂❤❤❤
I gotta say I love your day 2(?) outfit of the vine sweater and overalls… I gotta get me a top like that! 😮 ❤
Same!
Every thing you do is a touch of Magic!!!
Amazing job freehand painting the spine designs! Loved them!
Oh your creations are always right up my alley!! ❤
I, too, am over-the-moon! It's a Rachel Maksy day!!!📚Loved this project!💖💖💖💖💖
Love old books! You are giving me ideas for my living room/home library now 🥰 They look amazing.
This is a compliment. Your roommate is very Weasleyesque and the staff k of books sealed the deal. Love it 😀
A year or so ago I had to make a bunch of fake books to fill up a bookshelf for a stage version of "Clue."
This past October I made more fake books for "Young Frankenstein- the Musical"s infamous revolving bookcase.
Making fake books can be a lot of fun! But making a lot of anything becomes tedious very quickly! So I totally get your experience. This turned out SO whimsical! Always a pleasure to see your work. I have many random stacks of books, in various stages of " they are falling if you look at it sideways"!! All over my sitting room. The good part is, I read them all. The bad part is , 6 months ago I built 2 tall bookcases for them and promised to to go through my books and put in the book cases or donate them.
Well it's 10 day's into 2025 and I have added books and broken my promise 😢
I am going to try to muster up your get it done MOJO and... well I will let you know lol.
Great job 👏 it looks awesome. ❤
Eeeeekkkk! My birthday fell on an upload Friday from Rachel by far the best way to end my birthday!
(no pun intended, but I'm never one to turn down a pun, so you can have that.)
thank you for sharing with us again, i love how this came out! take care, take your time, and be happy
SO CUTE!! I love that it almost looks like an illustration of a book stack. Perfect.
This was so therapeutic to watch come together...I don't know why but my mind immediately went to "Is it cake?" 🤣
Rachel, love you dearie!! I hope you are protecting toj peace and having rest. We are here for you 😍😍😍😍
17:14 okay but the little bunnies are ADORABLE 😍
So fun! I like that you didn't adhere them in place, as you can twist some of the books in the stack, take them out and flip them or, if you make other stacks, mix in different sizes, to make it all the more "precarious" and whimsical. That stack is thicccccc! I love it SO much ❤ Another amazing crafty serotonin boost from Ms. Maksy for the win 🎉
Tedious but worth it! They book stack is charming like you 🖤😘
Oh so fantastical!! I love making book decor in all shapes and kinds, this is goin' on the list!!
Love the whimsy. ❤
I luv this. I luv books....Wait....I have trash....I'm making this, but where to put it? (2 minutes later0 I Know Where To Put It!!!! MUWAAAAAHHHHH!!!! Paused just to comment that I definitely laughed at "Lara Craft," so thank you for that one!
12:12 im so used to hearing video game music in youtube videos it felt surreal hearing this and it not being from donkey kong country
Beautiful. I fully headcanon the rabbit one as Watership Down.
Yess this made my day! Happy new year
The 90s: reuse reduce recycle
Rachel: bet ✌️

That was so different. Love it! I liked that you went the design route on the spines instead of titles. Also those rabbit drawing skills were on fire.
This is so cool. I kinda wanna start doing that. Also, I like you decided to make videos that are in different parts instead of one massive long video. I feel like it’ll be a lot easier on you and I think it’ll be cool to see a little series of different.
Beautiful. Books are always beautiful. Well done, Lady!
This is such a fun project! It makes me want to figure out a way to do it with a bunch of different sized stackable drawer units, so some or most of the "books" can be usable hidden storage.
As always, the editing was lovely! Your videos are so fun to watch and rewatch!
I’m so proud of you for using only stuff from your craft stash!!!!
Not me going to click the "like" button at the Reveal only to realize that I already clicked "like" earlier in the video!
❤❤❤❤❤
Absolutely incredibly done!
The rose book is my favorite. 🌹
Reminds me of Beauty and the Beast. ❤
You are one clever (and persistent!) young lady! This turned out splendidly!
What a great job you did! It's very cute I hope you show it styled in the space.
Love love love love love! So freaking cozy
This is a genius project idea and it turned out so good!
My girlfriend just sent me this. 🤣
I'm impressed by how funny and interesting this is. LOL
Also I love the bloopers.
Great decoration for your hobbit hole sewing room. Reminds me of Bilbo's study in The Fellowship of the Ring
Girl, your hair is always so FABULOUS!!!
