    PETA, you do it every time and I learn something each and every time I watch your videos. Also as an aside, unlike some other videos, your voice is pleasing to the ear and of course your accent is wonderful. I would love to have a face to connect to all your wonderful gifts that you share with us. You have made my coloring adventure so much more. Thank you. Now off to Amazon for a Lyra colorless blender pencil!

    +Peta Hewitt The Prismacolor is just like the Lyra Splendor pencil :) I like the Derwent for blending as it really pushes the colours around and will do so on any type of paper. The Prismacolor and Lyra look perfect for resist techniques and light smoothing, but as blenders, I find they both only seem to work well with certain papers. Thanks for your video :) Very useful.

    Thanks for the tips I learn so much from your videos. I'm new to coloring and don't have any pastels. I have and "experimental" coloring book I use to try and learn different techniques. While watching a video from another TH-camr she mentioned that she knew of some folks who used eyeshadow as a background. Soooo, since my daughter bought me an eyeshadow palette last Christmas will all these bright colors I'll never use, I use the eyeshadow as a background in my experimental book over the colored pencil (No blender, burnisher or white pencil used) and I was shocked it worked. So far no rubbing off on other pages. I haven't tried this in my Secret Garden coloring book yet. I have more practicing to do. I really enjoy your videos and glad I subscribe to your channel. Happy Holidays!

    this is fab. thank you so much. I really enjoy your videos and tutorials. Ive learned so much from them already. I just have Derwent pencils and to a degree I agree with you about the Derwent blender but not having an alternative I don't have a comparison - apart from a white pencil which, for the purpose of using the pastels for the background, will be a good alternative. I really want to try out my pastels but they are not mega expensive ones but look exactly the same as the ones you use. I suppose I will just have to get on and try it to find put how they perform. Firstly though, I have loads 0f college assignments and work to do (I'm a mature student), so no time for play just yet... I'll let you know how I get on.
    thank you again Peta.

      +Paula Gale You're welcome. I suggest experimenting on a back page first. I sacrifice the back page of many of my books to experiment with so I know what to expect. I've ordered a set of cheap Mungyo pastels to try. They have a lot more colours with brighter shades of pigments than my old set. (Although you get only tiny quarter sticks.) I'm interested to see how they perform compared to my Windsor and Newtowns.

  • @Pixie_Barrow2024
    @Pixie_Barrow2024 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I honestly apply my pastels far more carefully than most people, I think. I'm annoyingly careful about using pointy tools around edges, and I don't do any blending, layering or other pastel painting techniques on an already colored page if I can at all avoid; if I do, I make absolutely sure the colored areas are burnished. But if I'm going to do a pastel painted background I put that in first, spray with fixative to preserve the color - super important - then proceed. Thanks for this information, though, because I'm always deciding to do backgrounds after the fact 🤣

    • @PetaHewitt
      @PetaHewitt  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Heather Leisure I think it depends on what pencils you use. i personally like the Derwent blender with Polychromos but not with Prisma's or luminence.

    • @PetaHewitt
      @PetaHewitt  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I seal them to stop them imprinting on the opposite page. Life fastness isn't such an issue as they are protected from light inside a book. As for displaying them you would have to consult the light fastness of the individual brand you used.

    Hi there Peta. I read somewhere that the derwent blender pencil is wax based and therefore not good when blending plochromos because those pencils are oil based and should be blended using oil. That was my thinking but from your demonstration I think I was wrong as it looks just fine.

    • @PetaHewitt
      @PetaHewitt  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +cici suciati Hi Cici. unfortunately know. this process works because the surface of the pencil colouring resists the pastel. the pastel won't stick to it and just slides off so the colours of the pencils stay true. the pastels would stick to anything coloured in with fine liner or marker and would tint their colours.

    Can you do your background with chalk pastels,then add fixative then still color over the fixative with colored pencil

    • @jayteadesigns
      @jayteadesigns 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience, yes, definitely. In fact right now I am working on a page from the Creative Haven "Creative Cats" coloring book, and I have done just that. I first applied pastels, then fixative, and now I am coloring in details with colored pencils, markers, and gel pens.

    If you use alcohol markers for the fine stuff, is there something you can put on such as clear blender? So it would not change the colors of the markers? I love your videos, always so I formative. Thanks so much for sharing.

    • @PetaHewitt
      @PetaHewitt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many brands of alcohol markers, such as Copics, have a clear blender in their range. It does not alter the colours of the markers, just lightens it.

      +Astrid S Hi Astrid. I used a colourless blender to colour over only the areas that i had lightly coloured and areas i wanted to leave white. Almost all of the other areas had been coloured fairly firmly with coloured pencils and going over them all would be unnecessary.

    How would you use this technique on a fairly large area w/o having to use a blender pencil on each item?

      +lradon1 Using the blender pencil on each item is unnecessary if the colour was laid down firm enough. I find a moderate amount of pencil pressure on the final layer of colour is quite enough. I only use the blender on areas where the colour has been laid down lightly, or an area has been left deliberately white to seal them.

    HI there Peta, first of all thank you so much for this tutorial video, very informative. I am using the Faber Castell Classic Colour Pencils and thinking about using soft pastels for background coloring. Just wondering if pastels have any negative effects on pictures that I have applied with the Derwent Burnishing Pencils. And would the Faber Castell Classics being a budget colour pencils be ruined by soft pastels? Thanks.
