I hope to play half as well as him one day, I use to play the viola - and now i am picking up the violin/fiddle. I wish he was still around to teach me, but i know he will be proud watching his great great niece from heaven aha! :)
Are you really. ? I have a great grand father who played the hell out of a fiddle like nothing else, he loved tommy I just started this year I think of him wish he was here to teach me as well..

there is nothing better than this for me right now.there is a reality in him that shines...and his friends are great too.the banjo player is tops...all of them together,magic from god.
the ladies dancing too...reminds me of my Mom.
i love this! i swear when i cranked it today here in Montreal,with the windows open,i am sure it made some people smile,and lifted their hearts.

while i see how you feel, it puts a smile on my face. seeing that much rosin on the fiddle, tells me he plays the hell out of thing and often, i also feel the same way about banjo heads, a dirty and worn banjo head equals bragging rights. lol

I saw this on the TH-cam homepage. I never thought this kind of music was a secret or something that needed to be "discovered". I thought the focus of the project would be to educate Americans about traditional music from other cultures. Apparently, though, America itself has culture and traditions that people from other countries, like @maggottdude, can discover for themselves.
In the interest of full disclosure, I married a woman from Surry County, worked in Mt. Airy and will move back there

All jokes aside, this is absolutely beautiful. Much better music than what the general public listens to on the radio.
Classical and traditional music combined to make something that isn't at all the a typical "hill billy" music that people judge it as.

@1032974b In Bluegrass music, the bridge on a violin is "filed down", and the violin becomes a "fiddle". It allows the player to be able to play all 4 strings at the same time, if need be. :-)
Europe was never this funky. Much is rightly owed to the contributions of our early European settlers, but this music here reflects (perhaps) an even deeper truth about the uniqueness of the American experience - the blending of seemingly different cultures to create something new. This here owes as much to the African presence as it does to any European offerings. What is amazing is how history continues to hide the "other stories" that often remind us of the unpleasant aspects of our past. MTC
Agree 100% about how much unacknowledged African influence there is in this music! But I would beg to disagree about there being nothing as funky to compare from the old world. I play old time and Klezmer and some Roma music. Done right there is all ~ the same vibe. It is all about the feeling, which is universal. It was so strong in Tommy that it helped save his music from disappearing. There is a common theme of oppression. Africans here and Jews and Roma in Europe all suffered. That's a flat bridge on that fiddle. The neck has pulled down very low. The bridge top is close to the center heart hole.

If a new way of living, entertaining, dressing, eating, etc is not better than the old way of life then by all means it is not considered progress. In this case we are talking about brutal alienation-change. Anyone can tell this is the case in most of the world's nations
There's tremendous difference bewtween progress and alienation-change.
So, preserving traditions and cultures is the most progressive option and the least "helding down" one.

@maggottdude If we just follow traditions, how can we ever evolve and move forward? There are many ignorances that traditions hold on to for purposes that are superficial. If we can disconnect ourselves from learned cultures, we can view each other and the world as brethren, kinfolk, all members of the same tribe; the beings of earth. Tradition and culture give us reason to keep ourselves apart. That is not what the future of the human race needs. Perhaps at one time it was useful; not now.
