I really like this , it looks like it sat in a old farmhouse for years and naturally aged , i like it a lot better than sanding off the paint to make it look distressed
My mother scored a piece for me almost identical to your buffet at a farm auction in central Missouri back in the 70’s. I was a newly wed and had been bidding on “antiques” with mom at auctions since college and I had been looking for a buffet like that. She got it for $10, and it had been in a barn with chickens and hay and I thought I’d have to paint it. In those days it was called “antiquing” the furniture. But after vacuuming and washing it I discovered the veneer to be sound and it was in amazing shape and all it needed was the old varnish finish to be restored (yes, your dreaded Old English oil finish)! I passed it on to my daughter 20 years ago when she got married and suggested a distressed painted finish on it two or three years ago to her, but she wants it the way it was as she was growing up! Those pieces are all solid wood with real wood veneer, no particle board or plastic and will be around many more years!
Turned out Amazing but you are right, some people aren't "strong" enough to handle chippy. If you are going to do chippy then do it like this. Love yall

I have my grandmothers dining room set. Table , chairs and buffet. The finish is pretty splotchy looking. I have been thinking of painting and distressing everything. My family would probably not be a big fan of the transformation. But the finish has darkened so much over the years. I just need to do it! Love how this turned out. ❤️
It’s very cool….. I love how much the white wax helps the overall piece. Question: will it keep chipping now? Or is it done bc you sanded snd waxed???? Great work Rays!!!
It looks good all done. I am not a chippy fan...lol. I like distressed but not that much chippy. But I can appreciate it. And I know there are a lot of people that love chippy. But always love to watch you no matter what your creating. ❤

But Shazam I adore that color. And I’d want some chippy. I wonder if you could paint it first with White Swan? My objection is the stark contrast between the dark and paint color. Would it chip off the White Swan too?

Zeb answered my question at the end..I was wondering why you didn't just sand the edges of the veneer after the loose parts came off.. guess it looks better getting it all off! I love chippy but not on all furniture. Like a statement piece! This looks way better than I thought it would at the start lol! I adore the buffet and someone will get a real treasure for their home! Great job! Will you try painting a buffet done with a cream undercoat plus some salt wash.. and white swan or a milk paint in white on top? I'd love to see a layered chippy or distresses look but in creams & whites..👏🏼☺💕

The piece is so beautiful - the carved legs .. But the brown brown had to go ! On a chippy ... you have to wait until the end to see the final beauty... with all the white rooms & plainess-- this piece gives the WOW factor that is always needed ...a piece from RAY BESPOKE VINTAGE .... of course !

I love the chippy look, but wish you had toned the natural wood before you put the milk paint on the cabinet: so I am curious could you have sanded the cabinet back or stripped the stain off, the colour of the stain looked too new, if you had toned the stain on the wood before applying the milk paint, would the milk paint pull it off. Or would you need to let the stain toner dry a few days before applying milk paint?
That broken foot is exactly what I would like to see. How to fix. I have a China cabinet, It was my great grandparents wedding gift. They have tgiven it to myself and my husband just beforeWedding . 2 feet are cracked and the veneer is pealing. I’ve seen different ways our to fix Venere problems. Need the easiest and best. Can you please give advice. It is my 3 rd most Cherished gift from them. Second only from an occasion bench which also needs help. (At a later time) can I send you a photo some way?

It could. A million years ago we did the buffet that is in our room. Apothecary is underneath and I loved how the milk paint chipped over top.

Love the chippy, make my own milk paint from scratch using milk curds I wouldn’t use any other kind of paint ever again!
I do that too. I've made a great yellow using turmeric.

The thing with milk paint is you really can’t control the amount of chippy. Milk paint just does its own thing. 😉❤️
