    Farmers and ranchers generally keep their trucks for a long time. The big problem I see is all of the electronics on these new trucks are going to be a nightmare. We rarely roll up windows and baby pick up trucks on the farm. Lots of dust and junk gets in there. For 50+ grand, it's going to be interesting to see longevity. It seems obvious that they make trucks for the suburban family now instead of farmers and ranchers.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      But they make trucks for most all demographics nowdays. Basic worktruck models still have manual windows and doorlocks, an very few amenities featured on those $50-100k mall crawlers.

    • @JFRago5
      @JFRago5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      @Alan Bowers - I call nonsense on finding a basic work truck. Sure you might be able to "build" one on a manufacturers website, but good luck finding one on a lot. Especially one with manual windows, manual transmission, and 4wd. Even if you are lucky enough to find one, knob controlled heat/ac/etc. are a thing of the past. Yes even the no option bare bones trucks WITH knobs are actually just electronically controlled. Heck even steering and gas are electronically controlled. I too, am curious to see the survival rates of these new trucks in 20 years.

    • @rudythecuban1589
      @rudythecuban1589 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JFRago5 No argument from me on the manual windows issue.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      JFRago5 call nonsense all you'd like, I found over a dozen completely barebones trucks from each brand near me (within 25 miles). That's only a fraction of the fleet at the dealers here, but none-the-less they are available. And sure even the HVAC is electronically controlled these days, but that doesnt mean they are any less reliable. Think about all the electronic components that have been in vehicles for decades from EFI to ABS. While nothing is guaranteed, if an issue arises it'll just be a module swap away from getting back on the road, as opposed to struggling with corroded cables or broken levers.

      I never understood why people say theyre crap. The old 1st gen cummins dodges hold up just as well as the chevys and fords of tge same era. Wanna talk about crap? Gm interior turns to shit in 5 to 7 years such as any late 90s to 2007 pickups. My 07 classic Silverados interior is junk with gremlins compared to my dads 01 dodge that has over 100k miles than my chevy. Ford diesel by the way are notorious for water pump, head gasket, turbo, and much more issues for any that carry the power stroke name except the 7.3.

That truck served a lot of purposes from hauling and towing around his place, to helping get a couple of Mulies and elk out of some nasty canyons. All great memories. I run a cow-calf operation and run a 1994 F350 crewcab. Its got a 12 valve cummins going into it. It has an 8 foot box and gooseneck hitch and a heavy tow hitch below the back bumper. Right now it will pull a 14,000 pound net load (gross load is net plus the trailer) without too much worry. My neighbor just bought a 450 with all the options and paid $100,000 plus. Too much for me. I like my old truck, barely any electronics and heavy duty, rides a little rough so maybe some airbags in the future.

    I'm a farmer (no livestock) but I do drive a 50k+ newish F150. Its also our family car so it has to do triple duty (towing / hauling / family stuff) I don't want a beater because the truck becomes our sales booth at the local farmers market. So far, its done everything we've ever asked of it, and its done it in style.But yes, lots of money for carwashes and we have to pad the interior if we're going to load boxes into the cab.

      @@bigbossman5969 actually any newer over the road truck built and sold will comply with atleast tier 3 emissions. The only big truck that dont comply are off road but even those are now being held to the same standard if prduced after 2015 maybe earlier. Even farm equipment and construction are held to these standards nowadays. Now theres nothing illegal bout running a 97 pete with a c15 cat turned up. Although some states require an inspection especially in big city's like LA or denver where smog is present. Many companies also pay a carbon tax for how many miles or hours a engine gas operated aswell.

    These look like mostly hobby farmers to me. Having 5 cows and some horses doesn't make you much of a rancher. A trailer load of hay doesn't feed many cows. During the middle of winter we'll easily feed 150,000 pounds of hay a week, plus probably double that in corn silage.

    I worked for an apt. moving service as a kid. We supplied the truck and they the trailer(28') and as many jobs as we could do. I worked there for 5 years putting myself thru college. This was brutal on pick up trucks. It broke a brand new 84' GMC 2500 sierra classic HD. It was trashed at 50k. Long miles loaded down and pulling a heavy trailer. We did office moves with loaded fire proof file cabinets and stuff like that, not just furniture. l learned then from the farm guys that the Fords were the true work trucks. In my pool business l used Fords.

      Daniel Torquemada Jr my dad’s 99 gmc nbs k1500 has 329k with no rebuild. Got the 5.3l and he spent (Im guessing) about 1/4 to 1/3 of those miles pulling 5-10k trailers. Most he pulled was a 14k load which was a John Deere 4000 on a tilt bed 2 axle gooseneck. He has put this truck through the paces. I guess that’s why I don’t like that my grandpa drives a Ford.

      From my experience they have other daily drivers and just pull those trucks out to haul stuff or they're used as a backup so they dont accumulate that many miles over the years. I myself have a 99 Astro that I only use to haul people around when they wont fit in a car or a truck and it only has about 95K miles.

      Eastern Explorer everyone on these pages and other forums say that, and Chevy, Ford, and Ram (then Dodge) tried that. Those trucks would sit on the lots for over a year and never be sold. My father worked at the local dealership about 20 years ago and they had a basic stripped down work truck on the lot for over a year, if I remember right, it was nearly 500 days. The dealership finally bought it and used it as a parts/shop truck. Making trucks that only a extremely small percentage of people will buy is crazy.
