I'm so blown away that Oswald (a male otter) is a trainer (or training assistant?) for surrogate Otter Mothers! Wrapping my human psychology brain around this, the first term that came to mind is "Observant behaviour". I can see how in a raft of otters there would be older mothers the younger ones could observe how they take care of pups and learn from that. What a huge advantage to have Oswald who can show how things are done as an Otter 😃 Those new Mothers will be able to help guide future Otter Mothers thanks to Oswald!

Not specifically related to this but how do you tell the otters apart? Joey seems not to have a blonde head or ruff but not sure if that's his youth and their sizes are difficult to ascertain. Thank you for all of your work. Sea otters have been a favorite of mine for many years.

It’s more a struggle due to human conflict. Getting the buy in from the community etc.
