    The story behind this song is pretty crazy.
    It's basically about the doomed Franklin Expedition for the Northwest Passage. The Passage was believed to be an oceanic route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Captain Franklin took the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror through the passage. The day when they passed into the mouth of the Passage was the last time any of them were seen alive ever again.
    The crew died quite horribly if I'm honest. Lead poisoning, hypothermia, pneumonia and TB pretty much simultaneously.

    As someone who lives on the shores of the roaring Fraser, I've always felt touched by this song. Here's to the Northwest Passage, after long generations, finally being traversed by the children of Canada's long-gone explorers. May we shepherd it well in your honour.

    CHORUS
    Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
    To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea;
    Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
    And make a Northwest Passage to the sea.
    Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie
    The sea route to the Orient for which so many died;
    Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones
    And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones. [Chorus]
    Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland
    In the footsteps of brave Kelso, where his "sea of flowers" began
    Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again
    This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain. [Chorus]
    And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west
    I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest
    Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me
    To race the roaring Fraser to the sea. [Chorus]
    How then am I so different from the first men through this way?
    Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away.
    To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men
    To find there but the road back home again. [Chorus]

      This might give you a taster: basically the explorers of old. Copied from "wiki" of course:- Franklin's lost expedition was a British voyage of Arctic exploration led by Captain Sir John Franklin that departed England in 1845. A Royal Navy officer and experienced explorer, Franklin had served on three previous Arctic expeditions, the latter two as commanding officer. His fourth and last, undertaken when he was 59, was meant to traverse the last unnavigated section of the Northwest Passage. After a few early fatalities, the two ships became icebound in Victoria Strait near King William Island in the Canadian Arctic. The entire expedition, 129 men including Franklin, was lost.[2]

      The singer(s) is going on a journey of self-exploration, heading to the West of Canada and thinking of the white men who traced this way before him. He's trying to find himself; they were expanding knowledge of the world. But the journey is only ever complete when you return to home, wherever that may be.

      Edit
      The narrator states that he is taking "passage overland in the footsteps of brave Kelso" three centuries after. This refers to Henry Kelsey, an English explorer and trader apprenticed to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1684, who was commissioned to explore the prairies in response to the competition posed by French Traders.[3] Rogers confessed in an interview in 1982 that during the writing of the song, he had not been sure of Kelsey's name, and had guessed it was Kelso when recording the song.[3] The lines "To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea" and "seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered broken bones/and a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones" commemorate the Franklin expedition.[4]

      zackary cooper , hi, after Stan Rogers wrote this song he admitted that he got the name wrong, it is actually Henry Kelsey that he was writing about. sea-of-flowers.ca/wp/?p=6. I hope you don’t mind but I’m sure using the right name is in no way being disingenuous to the song writer.

      No, the tenor part is correct. The bass and baritone fill out the lower bits in harmony with that.
