Y'know within the context of the dark souls universe, animals are honestly a fascinating and scarcely looked at subject. Where did the first animals come from? Where they created by the Witch of Izalith, she is (or was) THE lord of life, holding the lord soul of life, meaning she held dominion or great influence over all that which was alive. (humans, animals, and maybe even the gods themselves I.e. gwyn and his kin/clan) Or perhaps they came about around the same time as those that came from the dark, including those that would find the lord souls, a natural phenomenon as a result of fire (the first flame) coming into existence and thus disparity. (now there's distinct, living things, instead of deathless uniformity in the previous age of ancients) Maybe still they came about through the evolution or mutations of other creatures that already existed, we know that 'serpents' (of all kinds) are descendents of dragons, seen often as a degeneration of their more prestigious kin/ancestors. In that same vein maybe the likes of crocodiles (and other reptiles) are descendants of dragons too! Could some mammals (or what we'd clarify as) in the Dark Souls universe descende from creatures like giants or even the pygmies, offshoots that are kin to humans such as ape-like creatures that could exist in this world? It is frankly an interesting concept to explore, non-human creatures besides dragons, giants and gods, the many other living creatures, animals that inhabitants this fascinating world! Edit: insect life too, where did the first of them come from in the DS universe? Are they perhaps creations of Izalith? Or did they come about unintentionally, like spontaneously appearing when fire began which would make them an even bigger mystery than perhaps any other groups of creatures.
That is a very well made Crocodile model I must say, but bloody hell the art direction of Demon´s Souls sure got shoved around a couple times Especially the shadow birds, they look like something from a different game altogether, I hear Demon´s Souls had troubled development and was salvaged in the last moments but goodness I wonder other madness would have been in store
It's funny to think that even back then they were upcycling assets and building their catalogue. Just based on the animations the shadowbird is almost def a King's Field assst
Maybe the animals looking normal and being all over the place was going to be a metaphor for nature taking back what was taken from by the humans of this world. Kind of like the visual story telling of far cry 2.
@@Cartograph176 Yh fuck the remake art. Bluepoint really had the audacity to change Miyazaki's art direction for no reason at all just cos the geniuses thought their ideas were better smh. I hope they never touch another souls game ever again.

I still remember seeing that staff wielding wizard walking side-by-side with a deer in one of the cutscenes. I always wondered what that deer was and why it was following the wizard into the Deep Fog. Was it merely the wizard's familiar? Was it a spirit of the forst and friend of the wizard, similar to some kind of folklore? Seeing this deer model really makes me sad that we could've gotten an answer to that, but never did. Funny enough, there's a crocodile in a dark souls novel called masque of vindication. Not a great book but it gave me some ideas for a soulsborne DND campaign.

For some reason I always assumed that black, bird-like creature was smaller, like crow-sized. Now that I see they are much bigger (similar to the size of the Storm Beasts) I wonder if they were originally going to be what was flying around shooting stuff at us at the Shrine of Storms. They tie aesthetically to the look of Reapers and the Shadow Ghosts, and the opening mouth animation could easily be it launching spires or magical blasts.
