Yes but the steel rope was tested as a single line, whereas all the other ropes were tested as double lines- halving the tensile stress compared to steel at the same load.
@@stephenrhoades8686No, no, the test was cool and you can see that good quality materials will support more, but in terms of position it was undefined, if you pay attention, the breaks happen at the points where the knot caused structural damage, thus reducing the capacity of the rope, there are other types of knot that would be more suitable for this test. but it's always good to see a hydraulic press breaking things.
@@demervalaugustodacunha1954the fact the web isn't weakened by knots as much is also another reason why it's better though, and even if you assume perfection for steel, it'd be weaker still, even if only by a couple hundred kilograms In this example, it's 3.5 times as strong as the steel rope, so even if the steel rope is weakened to a third of its abilities, spider webs is still stronger. Don't get me wrong, steel not stretching is a massive bonus over spider web, along with being much much cheaper to produce and distribute, since steel rope can be made anywhere with steel, instead of at spider silk farms or wherever they get it from.
@@BisexualPlagueDoctor the metal rope had just one line, while the others divided the force into 2 lines, which certainly changes the result severely, I don't know if it would be stronger or not, but I can't know since the knots used didn't take it into account the characteristics of the ropes, such as alpine ropes, which typically do not hold well in this type of knot, slipping much more than the others, causing more structural damage.
Nah I'm a Civil Engineer, the larger the diameter the better it will sustain tension, larger diameter are more ductile. The stresses in the steel rope will be thoroughly distributed if it's thicker in size meaning it can handle a lot more tension 😊
i see a common mistake here, people say for nothing because it means "de nada" in spanish, but that is wrong, you should say "you're welcome", that is the correct translation 👍

@@SleepyTime-t9pno the load is spread across all the ropes even if they are a part of the same while it doesn’t half the load exactly it will help a lot
Just a suggestion, next time you try testing ropes, look into some different types of knots and hitches to secure the rope properly, otherwise they all just keep coming undone while you test them. There are a good couple hitch ties you can use that get tighter and lock the knot in place when more force is applied in the right way for your test, and will give a better idea of when the rope failed as opposed to when the knot failed.
On the sling band you have a problem causing faulty result. The bottom ring contact area has extra tension concentration in the edges of belt, failing it too soon.

Spider silk is one of the strongest naturally occurring substances in the world. I already know that spider rope is gonna be chilling. Edit: Yup. A rope that needs 14.5k kilos (That’s almost 32k lbs for all of you Americans like me) to snap is definitely a pretty damn good rope.

In such tests, you should use an eight knot because it puts the least strain on the structure of the rope under train.

2 strands is 3x stronger than a single strand. I made this up, but you get the point.
Fugure eight is not the strongest knot. It is just easy open after loading. Ropes should be spliced together to make them very strong.
