  • In this video Andrea answers some commonly asked questions about rosin:
    1. What is rosin?
    2. How is rosin made?
    3. What is the difference between light and dark rosins?
    4. What if i am allergic to rosin?
    and she also goes through a few of our favourite rosins :)

    That bernadel rosin is amazing. But I literally saw a strad violin shaped rosin and you KNOW I'm gonna grab that when I get my bow rehaired or buy a new bow

    Hello I really like you videos they are very informative. I am having a big problem with my bow hair or rosin, it doesn't have grip to the strings, my bow it's new and my strings too I'm thinking it's my rosin because of the weather changes but im not sure Idk what to do It's really uncomfortable playing like that I have to add more pressure to the bow for it to get some grip... I was using dark rosin and I change to light rosin but the problem is still there, Can it be really the wheater? How can I fix it, I even tried to clean my new bow hair but nothing happens, no metter how much rosin I put on the hair It doesn't do anything It make it even worse, right now where I live it's hot and humid but sometimes can get really cold

      Hi Frank! Thanks for getting in touch. That’s a bit of a tricky one without seeing the bow. Can you give us a bit more information? What country/location are you in? What brand of bow/strings are you using? Which rosins have you tried? And what did you clean your bow with?/what process did you use to clean it? Also, have you taken it back to the store you bought it from yet for them to have a look?

      @@sydneystringcentre Hi, thank you so much for answer my question, I think it was the weather, I was using a lot of rosin because the bow needed more grip but that made it worse so i decided to take out some rosin and that finally worked out, it's weird I know, I have to add rosin in a very controlled way and that fix the problem, I think the weather make it to be like that idk, to much rosin it's a mess and my bow doesn't get good grip to little rosin and I have no grip at all so I have to find the perfect amount of rosin to put on the bow...

      @@FrannB Hi Frank, yes too much rosin can be an issue. Usually too much rosin creates a 'gritty' sound. Some people also complain of a 'hissing' or 'buzzing' noise as well. I can see how too much rosin could cause issues in a humid environment, and i think changing to a light rosin is a good idea as it's generally not as sticky as dark rosin. Good luck!

    Hello! Ive heard that mixing rosins isn’t rly good, but if the only rosin that has been used on my bow is dark, and if i use a different higher quality dark rosin will it have any negative effect on the sound?

    • @sydneystringcentre
      @sydneystringcentre  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hi there! Yes, we would normally recommend getting the hair cleaned by a Luthier (or having your bow rehaired) if you're thinking of changing rosins, especially if you are a professional and trying to make fine tweaks to your sound etc. If you're a beginner you may not even notice the difference between your new rosin and old rosin, especially if they are both dark and blending together so I wouldn't be too concerned mixing them. As you keep applying the new rosin, the old rosin will gradually work it's way out over time. :-) hope that helps!

    What is the difference of the pirastro olive in a black box and the white box?

    • @sydneystringcentre
      @sydneystringcentre  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! Oliv rosin used to come in a black box and now comes in a white box. If you purchase Oliv rosin in a black box you can assume it will be quite old. Some retailers may not have updated their photos, so what you would receive is probably going to be in a white box. Hope this helps!

    I have a problem... I have the the Bernardel rosin for my viola, and this kid at my school kicked it and it shattered. I really need it for my orchestra and I can't ask my conductor for a new one. Is there any way I can fix it?

    • @sydneystringcentre
      @sydneystringcentre  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lizzie, if your rosin snapped in half you could probably salvage it by heating one side and putting it back together but we never recommend trying to repair rosin because it is very dangerous. If you heat the rosin it gets incredibly hot and can easily drip and cause burns. There may be a ‘how to’ video on TH-cam, but we don’t recommend it. Much easier to just buy a new rosin :-)

    • @sydneystringcentre
      @sydneystringcentre  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi there, yes you can use violin rosin on a viola bow but a lot of violists actually use cello rosin :-) if you’re an advanced player I’d recommend getting one specifically for viola such as one from the ‘Andrea’ range

      Hi Wayne, it depends on your level of ability and what sort of feel/sound you want. If you're not too concerned just go for an affordable student rosin, however if you want something a bit nicer I quite like the Bernardel rosin, or any pirastro rosin should be fine for your needs as well.

      Actually.. I think I heard that soft rosin isn’t as good for extremely hot weather. So if you are in Texas for example then go for a hard rosin.
