Hey Dave that is a common issue on some kawasaki's. Taryl just did a video about these sticking chokes on Kawasaki engines and shows how he fixes them. good job on fixing this one. All the Kawasaki engines I have ever had I have always had to choke them when they were hot or cold. Good to see you posting again I missed you this winter.
Hi Bob. Funny you mention Taryl. A day or 2 after I filmed this he put his video out. I was contemplating on even putting this video out after seeing his but I thought somebody might find it useful. I thought it was funny that our fixes were almost the same. Makes me feel like I did it right

Mine was more difficult to diagnose as it only got stuck after the engine got hot. Of course one rarely uses the choke then. Havn't fixed it yet. The throttle shaft stuck last year and I had to ream out the corrosion from the aluminum housing with a drill bit and the shaft with emery paper. It uses a plastic sleeve as a bushing, so don't forget it.
How's she goin'? Nice fix on the choke and a good find to locate the problem too. The engine not starting unless you choke it I think is normal for a lot of engines. They need 'max vac' to draw the fuel up from the carb bowl. Wow listen to me eh, I sound like I know what I'm talking about!!! LOL Great video Dave. Nice camera shots!!! Take care!!!
From what I read, that seems to be common with those engines. Your fix should solve the problem for awhile. Funny how that problem showed up at the most wrong moment. Good fix and great video. Stevo
Hi stevo. Yes that's what I'm hearing now , that this is a problem. Like I say I'm always learning. Funny when I tested the drive belt on camera it ran great. Then I delivered it and it ran terrible. When I messaged him I was going to take it back home to see why it was running badly, he told me it ran bad sometimes. I wish he would have said something before hand but we got it handled either way
good fix . i have an old murray rider w/plastic bushings in front wheels and spindles , and always wonder whether i should lube plastic or not . also , i have several 1990s jd riders w/ kawasakis (great engines) , they all seem like the choke when starting hot/cold too .
@@davessmallenginerevival2847 I’m not professional either. I’m good if it consistently starts every time, choke, no choke, whatever. As long as it is dependable enough to start. Don’t want to walk back to the garage when it conks out at the furthest possible place.
I was surprised how easily the choke rod came out considering how stiff it was. Great job on fixing this

Mike had some long walk back choke issues recently, if I am remembering right.

Dirt and dust will lock up any thing pretty quickly
Keep it pressure washed really good and often
Hey Dave. Chokes can cause lots of problems. But it's good to get them running right.. my dad would have called that machine a cold blooded SOB.

Do you think the entire carb might need attention? Needs some enrichment to start = dirty carb or air leak?
I do not think so because it runs pretty good but I'm no professional either 😁

Looks like it better to just pull carb and ultra sonic clean it and make sure it frees up

A stuck choke is no joke for the engine being choked up is not cool
