  • Distraction osteogenesis is an effective technique used to gradually grow a patient’s own bone exactly where it’s needed in the head, face or jaw. Our plastic and craniofacial surgery experts use internal and external distraction devices to help achieve outstanding results for a variety of conditions. Learn more about how these work from Dr. John Polley, plastic surgeon and creator of numerous medical devices, including the widely used rigid external distraction (RED) device.

    My husband was on two craniofacial teams. I was fortunate enough to sit in on some of their meetings. I’m totally in awe of these surgeons.

    Dr. John W Polley performed two surgeries on me as a child at Rush in Chicago. He was so kind and did an excellent job each time. He is a great man!

      Sorry to hear about your experience, but sadly I am not surprised. My ex-wife and the mother of my 2 boys was disabled in a car accident. Scars and neuropathy we can't see anymore, but from time to time we are reminded by the mindlessness comments of carefree idiots. Our 8 year old is becoming a stainless steel lamb, though.
      She had a bilateral femoral derotation osteotemy. Cut bone, move bone, let heal. Not miles away, i'm sure.

      Is it easier than like a regular LeFort 1 for example? Do they not really cut anything, just screw in the distraction device?

    For how much time is it kept sir? And is the halo fixed or can be removed at night?

    • @sarat.7821
      @sarat.7821 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From my experience with having my red device the doctors estimate that I have to wear the red device (halo) for about 3-6 months. Sadly the halo cannot be removed, it stays on your head until after the 3-6 months.

    I assume these techniques are not realistic in the life of a single adult male with responsibilities? I have very mild hemifacial microsomia. one of the more mild cases. but i assume this is not realistic for me?

My daughter had the midface advancment with that same purple halo device... and it was anything BUT pain free!!! I was torture for her each time I turned those screws! which in turn was also mentally torchure for me as well!!
