    In a string of waypoints, each waypoint is actually 6-dimentional. It contains a point in space = 3 dimensions. It also contains a 3 dimensional vector to the next waypoint. The 3 dimensions are desired speed, bearing and vertical angle. You can actually plan a complete route through the valleys and let an SU33 fly it all by it self I any weather. And opposite the F/A18, the SU33 can handle a lot of waypoints - enough for a complete route. (Sorry for being so late with this comment).

      Well, I tried it a long time ago - and in my memory - it worked. I tried it now again and can see that the auto pilot in the SU33 is not really good enough for what I said - but nearly. It can fly a route by it self, but only if the waypoint is in a nearly straight line. Otherwise it will overshoot and get confused. It is not an airliner auto pilot!

      I'm a new player on DCS and I would like to know if it's possible to add/remove waypoints with the SU-27 for exemple, during the flight and not in the mission editor.
      I would also like to know how to change the latest point for landing, how to choose another airfield than the one I took off.
      In multiplayer, when I contact the ATC of another airfield and say that I'm at destination of their installations, the last points of my route for landing (in mode marked "ВЗВ" and "ПОС" in Russian), are unchanged, the points are still at the airfield where I took off, I really would appreciate explanations on that ^^

    Thank you Cap! I have been watching the reapers for a couple of months. I just started playing dcs 3 days ago and this video has helped me so much. I am currently trying to learn how to fly the su 27. Your tutorials are way better than the dcs ones. Good job brother!

    Think of the course line as a direct line between the two waypoints you're flying between, at the pre-specified parameters (altitude/heading). The double COURSE needle on the HSI is showing that line, which is 'fixed' for that leg. The barbed ends shows you which way TO the waypoint.
    The smaller HEADING needle of the HSI simply points directly to the next waypoint from your current position. It works like a ADF (Automatic Direction Finder, old tech nav system, where you tune in a frequency, published on a map, to a navigation radio tower that's in range, and the needle simply points directly to it. The tower transmit a frequency, and the ADF picks it up, and the needle points to the signal origin).
    IRL (in real life) the HSI double course needle would be your Desired Track (DT) in a gps. If you want to be on that course, you maneuver to intercept it. You should try to gradually intercept your course line because if you are heading perpendicular to it (90 degrees), you will go right through it and overshoot it by far, and then have to turn back to get on it. As you approach the course line, gradually start to turn so that you do a smooth intercept. Look at the Artificial Horizon instrument, the ADI, in this aircraft: it also has a glideslope indicator (the horizontal needle) and a localizer (the vertical needle) which is controlled by the aircraft, based on the waypoints you programmed in. When the localizer is deflected full scale, meaning all the way the the left or right, it means you are far from the course line, but as you get closer to the course line, that localizer line will start to move in towards the middle. If you are in a fast aircraft and you see that line start to move, start your turn, that way you will be able to intercept your DESIRED course smoothly without blasting right through it. IRL (in real life), if your HSI is controlled by your GPS (it can be controlled either by the GPS or by the Nav Radio), you ALSO have a CDI (Course Deviation Indicator, which is a white vertical line that moves in from the side) but in this game cockpit, it doesn't move, meaning nothing is controlling that specific part of the HSI. No big deal. In this aircraft, you can use the ADI and the HSI to know exactly where you are without looking at anything else.
    Your HSI is used when you do a precision instrument approach, and then it is controlled by a Nav Radio which is picking up signals broadcasted by the airport's ILS system.
    Next, think of the course line as having one long 'cross' superimposed over it: left, right, above, below. Your ADI glideslope and localizer is showing you how far left, right, over, or under, that course you currently are. When you're on course, they line up perfectly in the middle. If you go above the course you're supposed to be on, the glideslope (horizontal line) will start to drop (go down), indication you are ABOVE it, and vice versa for below. Your LOCALIZER needle will work the same: if you're LEFT of course, the needle is to the right of center, and vice versa.

    That MFD visual is very usefull for orientation unless you have map with charted waypoints. Pitty 29 only repeats HUD on it.

      @predattak 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That MFD (that is a data link) is ALSO very useful in combat it's great for your SA! If you have AWACS or GCI Radar or a wingman you see what targets they see on that screen. :)

    Good sir, you remind me of Ironhand and his old flanker training tutorials from the good old Lock on! Nostalgia at it's finest.

    In the MiG-29S how do you know which waypoint is selected? There is no info about it on any screen or display!!

    Hi CAP, Great videos, dcs is the best simulation for military realism period. I always go back to review you videos. A10C2, F14, F16, FC3, Spit, P51. Keep up great work.

    Hi GR Team, love your work, I swear I've watched hundreds of hours of these tutorials! Just a note though, would you ever consider revising this video or making a supplementary video that gives some navigation tips specifically for the MiG 29 variants? Because the HDD on the MiG is only a HUD repeater and doesn't include any of the waypoint/route information like you get in the Su27/J11. I learned the Su27 first, and have now transitioned to the MiG but I'm a bit at a loss when it comes to navigation beyond a simple point A - B flight.
    *I suppose if you're reading this, while I have your attention, this same sort of special attention to the MiG 29 autopilot modes would be great. It seems like the MiG has some of or most of the same functions as the Su27 but I can't make the route following mode work, and altitude hold (keyboard H by default) does weird things making the stick vibrate... I must be missing something.
    Thanks!

      Interesting, I always assumed Mig-29 was same as Flanker? Will look into it Sir.

    Very good tutorial. Sometimes for me the waypoints dont switch over to the next i am not sure if i am doing something wrong or if its a bug.

    • @krasp28
      @krasp28 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had this happen if I'm not perfectly on the course line. I think you basically have to pass *right* over the wypt to get the system to auto change to the next. There is a "next waypoint" key you can bind, I have it on the throttle side of my hotas

  • @cmibm6022
    @cmibm6022 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice tutorial - as usual. But Cap, you need to be consistent in your use of vertical/horizontal. It is somewhat confusing when you mention the course line as horizontal, when I would call it vertical.

    The mig-29 does not have a working ENR funcrion ... unfortunately so, it is my favourite soviet plane.

    The navigation abilities of the flankers are so much better than the navigational abilities of the F-15. I still wish that the MiG variants had the same GPS data-link program installed in their systems. It would make tracking external aircraft and finding airports more easily manageable.
