It's amazing- Eydie just about matches her incredible recording during this live rendition of the song. She tears it up big time. I'm so glad she won the Grammy for this. Thanks for posting this great performance.
Eydie Gorme is truly one of the last, if not THE last great "Belter" in the old show business tradition. This song, as done by Eydie especially, can put a lump in your throat and leave you crying for a week. This live performance of If He Walked Into My Life is great, to me, because it shows the intensity of emotion, not only in the singer for the song, but, in the audience's appreciation for the singer and the song. More videos like this one, please?
The most beautiful, powerful voice I have ever heard in my entire life. Such a talent. I admire Eydie Gorme's voice so much. Thanks God for this great artist and thanks for this post.
I just love Eydie Gorme there will never be another beautiful singer like her. Look here you upcoming singers how she enunciates her words and the eyes, hand motions and the emotions of her voice singing the song. You can feel it's coming from the heart. I miss her God Bless & peace to Steve Lawrence who misses his partner.
This is a favorite of mine -- I love the way she does it, with so much feeling. Gorgeous. So dynamic. Simply inimitable! NO one sings this song like Eydie -- it just gives me goose-bumps!
Beautiful song.. perfectly rendered. This lament of love and loss has lost none of its power to move hearts. In a stellar career, this is Eydie Gorme's brightest moment.
Jerry Herman said Eydie's version of this song was his favorite. On phrase where she sings, "and not enough of me", she does the most amazing shout/scream/sing. It's just incredible!
Its a pity people die and alright the songs is alive and exists but to think that when you realize the last minute that you remembered announcing that Eydie Gormei passed away what a waste to see that a gifted artist like her is dead and too late for you to know that she Eydie Gormei was an asset to a music and world of arts.
Same prayerful words from this lifelong fan. Steve and Eydie will always be in my personal pantheon of musical heroes. While many singers of today mistake screams and bellyaching screeches as singing, here's a musical genius who can belt out song and still maintain the song's integrity, musicality, and emotional power.
I consider Eydie Gorme singing Jerry Herman's "If He Walked Into My Life" from the musical "Mame" to be the finest popular singer singing the finest Broadway ballad. It just doesn't get any better than this for Showtune afficiandos like myself.
This is one of these songs that Eydie can belt out and captivate you as your listening and being mesmerized into the tune. She was one of a few female singers who can sing with great range and make it to easy with no problem. Another one was Keely Smith.
Richard, I agree with you. I'm sending some of Eydie's songs to a 65 year old lady friend. Yesterday I sent her some Keely Smith songs. How did we lose the "good stuff"? I wonder if either Eydie or Keely could get to first base on today's shows like American Idol and The Voice.. Add to these singers, Sammy Davis, Jr. I'd be lost without You Tube.
THIS is the kind of music and performances that young people today should be listening to, rather than the garbage they're being fed by the mass media. This music will last forever-- The stuff being churned out today is mostly disposable- Here today, gone and forgotten (thankfully!) tomorrow.
Nick Mayor Honestly, I don't think "music" and "chills" are thought of as related items in today's popular culture. Beautiful, haunting melodies, captivating performances by legendary artists... These wonderful things that give you and I chills, they are no longer factors that matter. I actually saw a person comment on a beautiful jazz performance here on TH-cam as follows (paraphrased): "What is this music? You can't dance to it.. you can't F#$% to it.. so what good is it?".. That's how people think these days..Music is rarely considered (or created as) ART anymore, to be appreciated in and of itself.. it's just a background, a vehicle for other activities. I think it's so sad in so many ways.. So many people live their entire lives and never (let themselves) experience music as art.
epf1961 I love nothing more than music from this era, but if you think there aren't singers and songs today who can give you chills, unfortunately you're missing a lot. Not all music today is Top 40 radio.
dallyx66 Buddy, all I know is what I hear firsthand-- I turn on the radio and it's a musical wasteland. All I hear is noise. Especially here in Arizona: Loud, annoying "pop" (is it even called Rock anymore? Lots of screaming vocals, distorted guitars, angry lyrics, no recognizable melodies), contemporary Christian, Country, and the same old '70s-80s "oldies" (when I was a kid, the "oldies" stations at least played doo-wop, which was fun music-- you don't even hear that stuff anymore!) When I lived in NY, I had my pick of non-commercial radio stations (those between 88 and 92 on the FM dial) who collectively offered an eclectic mix of everything from blues to classical, you name it. You want Louis? Glenn Miller? Bird? Coltrane? The Five Keys? Broadway soundtracks? Debussy? You got it! As a kid who was more into radio than TV, it was a treasure chest of good music. All I needed was my little clock radio and my cassette recorder and I was in heaven! So people living in areas like that may still have choices. Here in AZ, there's 1 NPR station out of Flagstaff which plays mainly classical, but that's about it. In many ways having TH-cam (and other online streaming music venues) is a God-send, since it offers alternative listening, but it has to be SOUGHT OUT. To the casual FM dial-turner, there's not much quality being offered. I agree with you that there's good music being made out there today, but it's underground--- in tiny clubs and on low-powered not-for-profit radio stations in cultural metropolitan areas.. I perform jazz and pop standards here in AZ but I'm a rarity.. For the most part it's non-existent.
One of my al-time favorite performances. Rarely hear a voice like Eydie's any more. Powerful, evocative, sensual -- just the complete performer. Love it, love her!!
RIP, I have loved you since I was in the 7th grade.....I sang you lullaby to my children 51 years ago. I loved you and I will miss your voice......Thank you for many years of wonderful music.
Her voice is a waterfall of a streaming cascade in a rain forest, harmonizing with birds and sounds of nature.A voice so sweet, powerful and sentimental can only come from God as a gift to us all.
How sad that she lost one of her two sons at age 23 from a heart defect. Her sons grew up in the show business world of 'Steve & Eydie' and this song is loaded with her personal feelings about any mother wondering if she has done right.
I always enjoyed watching Eydie, and Steve, on tv. This is my all time favorite song sung by her. God bless you, Eydie, and prayers to Steve during this difficult time.....
sheer brilliance and genius.. there will never be another singer who could express the musicality and emotionality that Eydie Gorme did.. You will alway be singing for us Eydie... bless your soul and sing through the heavens for us and through eternity .. RIP love you....
Before I heard the Beatles, before I was old enough to buy my own music, my sister had all her albums & other pop music late 50's and early 60's. I memorized every word to "Eydie Sings the Blues" and as I grew and my musical tastes diverged as a teen in the 70's, I never forgot Eydie and that voice. I was able to even tell her about 10 yrs ago at a small neighborhood bar she and Steve frequented, close to where she lived, and sadly died. Brava Eydie may you sing forever.
No crazy butt wiggling or cheesy costume (or lack of it). This is the real McCoy, a voice that delivers. Bimbo pretenders today just don't cut it, do they?
EYDIE GORME! I Had then privilege of seeing Eydie perform live. Eydie has a beautiful voice, has been a favorite in the 1960's to date among music lovers! I sent her an E mail today thanking her for the musical joy she has brought the world!
Eydie was an outstanding singer. She could put feeling into a tune. She is one of the best female singers ever. She started on the Steve Allen show and never looked back.
She was truly an amazing artist. What a voice. I saw her live in concert in front of a big band in Dayton, Ohio. On one tune she was holding the mic way below the belt at arms length and the note she cut loose on was ringing in the balcony where I was sitting with my jaw in my lap! She didn’t need a mic! Power and projection. Wow!
NO one has every nailed this tune this well. This is from Mame and NO Mame, Landsbury or others quite had this intensity or power.. one of my favorites of hes!!
She and her husband, Steve Lawrence are one of the greatest singer of all times and will never get tired of listening to them. We're lucky that when my late husband and I went to see them at the Long Island concert 10 years ago a concert we have enjoyed so much...
A voice like no other.....she stands alone like Judy Garland, Barbra Steisand, Lena Horne, Ella, Billie......the list goes on and on! So many one of a kind GREATS! Vocal tools sent from heaven......
+Bill Yovino I was just saying the same thing. I was a kid in the 60s and 70s and didn't pay much attention. Her and Steve always seemed to be playing second fiddle on the variety shows but they deserved the spotlight themselves. What a talent this woman was.

I like to think of myself as a child of the 60's, but this music is the real soundtrack of my life. Goodbye, Eydie. Bless you on your way, and thank you for all the magnificent music!
She was one of my favorite female singers, one of about 5! What a talent, and she had amazing breath control! We lost such a great talent way too young, sad. SHOW THOSE ANGELS HOW IT'S DONE, EYDIE, and RIP!
it's her amazing control & dynamics that sell this baby.AND the fact she was "LIVE" singing instead of using all kinds of recording devices to fix the voice like today. RIP Eydie u were a legend!!
WOW...She was UNIQUELY GIFTED....Amazing POWER and understanding of Lyrics and style. Makes you GOOSEBUMPS!! And you can see how much she LOVES to SING!! Thank you Eydie!!
I've just rediscovered Eydie. I remember her from the '60s. Now that I hear her today I think she's the last great female voice. How beautiful and sensual. All have hailed others, but there's just not the same quality. I'm glad I lived to appreciate this voice. Cheers! Mike
This is from her (in my opinion) best album "Don't Go To Strangers/Softly As I Leave You," recorded in 1966 and available at Amazon. It will send chills down your spine.
We had that album and it has always been one of my hands down favorite. She is in full command of every song and I thank sites like this that allow younger generations to rediscover these masters of pop.
One of the greats. I remember getting her autograph on Avenue M in Brooklyn in the early 60s. A class act in equal measure to her stunning talent. This rendition will live forever. Thank you, Eydie. My mom, who worshipped you, is welcoming you into heaven which is now even brighter.
The beautiful song from "Mame" sung by the best female voice ever. I was so lucky to have seen Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme in person at the peak of their careers. Phenomenal evening. Class act.
Never took Eydie seriously until I accidentally heard these screaming crescendos and I purchase the legendary album immediately! I’ve purchased a lot more since!!! Thanks!!!
These woman could really sing in and out of the studio. No audio tune, no flat notes. No gimmicks, Eydie , connie francis , dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, Barbra Streisand all could and can sing and with power and feeling behind them
I am only a recent convert to Ms. Eydie - I remember the day I heard this song on Sirius radio...it was transcendent. Nothing else mattered at that moment. She was underrated by most people, but treasured by those of us who gave her a sincere listen.
Eydie you "rock" my world! Saw you in San Diego (19 +/- 88) with Steve and Frank and you couldn't help it --- you stole the show!!! RIP you beautiful angel!
Christine Dunn Why was this part of my remark crossed out--makes no sense. I have seen curses and other terrible remarks left in--and this lovely statement you cross out? My goodness!
I didn't say anything about wheather she wanted to work with her husband or not she obviously did but had she not spent most of her career doing semi credible duets some quite corney and average she could have done anything she wanted. She could have been as big as Striesand as a solo artist but with steve she wasn't even close
I saw Eydie and Steve when they opened for Frank Sinatra in the late early 90's at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto...a show that was beyond belief. How can you go wrong with these 3 on one stage?
Great song writing, great melody, the best pop female vocalist in my lifetime, who blessed us with her voice quality, perfect phrasing and heartfelt performances, every time. What's not to love?
THIS IS A SINGER....fabulous, people dont sing like this anymore, what range what control, thank you for posting this absolutely wonderful, I beleive she is still alive, I remember as a kid watching her or her with her husband on the Ed sullivan show. one of the greats, thanks again.
NO ONE sings like that today. She's a gem...
One of the greatest female singer of all time...
YES SHE WAS> Now convince these young idiots of today who dont care nor do they want to!!!!!
AMEN!!!!
PS: I'm an old lady, & I still TRY to sing like that!!!!
Eydie, there was no singer like you. Thank you for filling my life and my ears and my heart with your beautiful voice. You are a gift from God.
One of the greatest voices and singers of the 20th century.
It's amazing- Eydie just about matches her incredible recording during this live rendition of the song. She tears it up big time. I'm so glad she won the Grammy for this. Thanks for posting this great performance.

Incomparable. Won the Grammy for this recording. Unmatched for all time
The most beautiful, powerful voice I have ever heard in my entire life. Such a talent. I admire Eydie Gorme's voice so much. Thanks God for this great artist and thanks for this post.
Her's is by far the best version of this song ever. She OWNED it!
Simply the best. I miss hearing her. A real class act. No gimmicks - just singjng!
Well it's certainly easy to see why she won a Grammy Award for her recording of this song in 1966.
She's one of my favorite singers. I love this version of this song because it doesn't feel rushed the way it's sung by other singers. Fabulous!
This is a favorite of mine -- I love the way she does it, with so much feeling. Gorgeous. So dynamic. Simply inimitable! NO one sings this song like Eydie -- it just gives me goose-bumps!
Her singing is so magnificent I get chills hearing this song.
Beautiful song.. perfectly rendered. This lament of love and loss has lost none of its power to move hearts. In a stellar career, this is Eydie Gorme's brightest moment.
Wow she nailed this song. I believed every word she sang. I felt her pain.
Jerry Herman said Eydie's version of this song was his favorite. On phrase where she sings, "and not enough of me", she does the most amazing shout/scream/sing. It's just incredible!
Yes!

A great talent, a great voice, a lovely person - Rest in Peace, and thank you for sharing your voice with all of us.
This petite lady walked on stage - and out came the voice of a lioness- rest in peace dear Eydie.
This lady will live in my memory forever. That voice is rare. None of today's pop singers have this kind of voice.
What can I say about this marvelous singer; she is fabulous! No one like her is around today. She won a Grammy for this song in 1966! She is great!!!
I consider Eydie Gorme singing Jerry Herman's "If He Walked Into My Life" from the musical "Mame" to be the finest popular singer singing the finest Broadway ballad. It just doesn't get any better than this for Showtune afficiandos like myself.
such an artist--she can sing tender, then send the roof off--her voice is a force of nature--a torch singer of 1st order.
Eydie and the orchestra didn't need any lousy auto-tune or computer-manipulation to make it perfect. This is the REAL DEAL.
When music was music and singers could carry a tune. Glorious....
Another great performance by Eydie on TH-cam: "What Did I Have That I Don't Have"
Now THAT is how it's done.
This is one of these songs that Eydie can belt out and captivate you as your listening and being mesmerized into the tune. She was one of a few female singers who can sing with great range and make it to easy with no problem. Another one was Keely Smith.

I would also add Vikki Carr to your list
THIS is the kind of music and performances that young people today should be listening to, rather than the garbage they're being fed by the mass media. This music will last forever-- The stuff being churned out today is mostly disposable- Here today, gone and forgotten (thankfully!) tomorrow.
Amen. And I sincerely doubt that the garbage today's youth listen to will give them chills as Gorme does for me in this clip.

He died of a drug overdose not a heart condition
@@gildamarlowe5110 Well his heart condition was that he took too many drugs and his heart stopped.
being a 79 year i9ld musician this song is my all time favorite, her interperrertation and superb vocalizatuib is fantastic

Eydie was an outstanding singer. She could put feeling into a tune. She is one of the best female singers ever. She started on the Steve Allen show and never looked back.
what a lady! She had some pipes :)

I never appreciated her talent way back when. I guess I was too young. Now I can see how incredible she was.
+Bill Yovino I was just saying the same thing. I was a kid in the 60s and 70s and didn't pay much attention. Her and Steve always seemed to be playing second fiddle on the variety shows but they deserved the spotlight themselves. What a talent this woman was.

it's her amazing control & dynamics that sell this baby.AND the fact she was "LIVE" singing instead of using all kinds of recording devices to fix the voice like today.
RIP Eydie u were a legend!!
Such a great combination of voice and phrasing - always believable and magnificent.
WOW...She was UNIQUELY GIFTED....Amazing POWER and understanding of Lyrics and style. Makes you GOOSEBUMPS!! And you can see how much she LOVES to SING!! Thank you Eydie!!
She is fantastic-Angela Lansbury does a great job also-- watch her
Oh. What a voice. What a talent. We will never have stars like this again.
WOW. Eydie I LOVE YOU!!! I 've had this on cassette for years and finally found it on CD!!! SHE is amazing!!!
A stunning display of talent. Perfect in every way. Few have achieved this.
Albums in español surpassed them all..
We had that album and it has always been one of my hands down favorite. She is in full command of every song and I thank sites like this that allow younger generations to rediscover these masters of pop.
All that purity and power and dead-on interpretation of a lyric. The Bronx remembers. Love you, Eydie.
RIP Eydie! Thank you for the many years of entertaining us. We love you.
Decimating!! Brings me tears every time..
One of the greats. I remember getting her autograph on Avenue M in Brooklyn in the early 60s. A class act in equal measure to her stunning talent. This rendition will live forever. Thank you, Eydie. My mom, who worshipped you, is welcoming you into heaven which is now even brighter.

She was perfection personified. This is one of her most gorgeous performances ever. Thank you for sharing this.
RIP you beautiful angel!
this girl could easily be the most underated female singer of all time OL Steve really held her back he was quite ordinary she was very special
That is so untrue-- Edyie wanted to be with Steve--it was so obvious. And no one held her back-- she was definitely her own person.
Christine Dunn Why was this part of my remark crossed out--makes no sense. I have seen curses and other terrible remarks left in--and this lovely statement you cross out? My goodness!

I saw Eydie and Steve when they opened for Frank Sinatra in the late early 90's at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto...a show that was beyond belief. How can you go wrong with these 3 on one stage?
How fabulous is this song? wow. No one sang it like Eydie. Love it.
Fantastic voice.
I can't believe she's gone.
Best rendition of this song I ever heard.
Great song writing, great melody, the best pop female vocalist in my lifetime, who blessed us with her voice quality, perfect phrasing and heartfelt performances, every time. What's not to love?
Rest in Peace Eydie and thank you so much for the beautiful music you gave us.
A beautiful song . Great voice and a beautiful person. R,.I.P. Eydie.
A great ballad by a terrific singer
My God! That blew me away.
one of the best renditions of this terrific song: The great Eydie Gorme **
