A masterclass in how to write a song, how to arrange it and how to sing it. Eydie knocked it out the park, the subtle points were delicate and poignant, the big notes thrilling, she lived not just the lyric but she seemed to have lived the whole life up to singing it, amazing. One of my favourites.
Beautiful clear color and sound - thanks Ed Sullivan Show for posting this. And look at the size of the orchestra behind her! Nothing like this anymore. Eydie was a national treasure. (As was Steve.) We miss you, Steve & Eydie!
Ray Bloch deserves more than a mere shout out. Those guys could swing, if required, and you could tell they wanted to hit a bunch of bombs and dead weight stops just for fun.
Her voice is so piercing and beautifully connected between registers. She's a bit like a spinto soprano with that 5th gear of power in her upper range that is surprising. Not just a big extended note - she could SING in her upper register in a thrilling way. Amazing range - I've heard her sing other songs that require more of her. She modulates like mad and it's somehow more exciting than Streisand's softer burr. Eydie was long before my time, but lived in a time when if you could sing like that - you always had people who want to hear you. Not everything was about having decades of hits. She could sing the American songbook beautifully, great latin music AND elevate most popular songs too. Check out her version of What I Did For Love, from a Chorus Line. She sure knew how to build a song without demolishing the meaning of it. A truly GREAT vocalist.
This is the performance that made me really consider Eydie. What a truly gifted artist.. it's one thing to sing a song but quite another to act it and show real feeling through it..She was phenomenal ❤❤❤
Love This Song So Much , One Of My Favorite’s !!! I Think Of My Beloved Young Handsome Son Who I Lost So Long Ago , Always Brings Tears When Ever I Hear It !!! ❤️ Love Eydie , She Has A Fabulous Voice and Is A Great Singer/ Entertainer 🌹 She Is and Always Will Be One Of My Favorite Female Singer’s Of All Times 🌹😌
Just a few seconds into the performance I got chills from the perfection. 💎🌈💎🌈💎🌈 Songwriter Gerald Sheldon Herman (1931-2019) died from complications of pulmonary fibrosis at age 88.
This song from the musical "Mame" was one of Eydie's biggest hits on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart where her record went all the way to number 5. It also managed to bubble under the Hot 100 at 120. Written by Jerry Herman. Steve Lawrence also appeared on this episode and Steve and Eydie sang quite a few songs.
A bravura performance for the ages--AND this takes nothing at all away from Angela Lansbury's performance of it on stage in the MAME musical. Wonderful times 10!
When I was a kid, I stayed up late to watch the original Steve Allen show that featured Eydie Gorme and Steve Lawrence when they were very young. Eydie is one of the greatest female singers of all time and is rarely mentioned along with Peggy Lee, Streisand, Lena Horne, etc. So unfair.
Edyie was a truly bright star. She had such an amazing voice. She and Steve are at the top of my list of all our talent and class. Gosh, I miss those days. I can't stand all this new garbage they try to pass off as good entertainment. It truly is garbage.
I so enjoyed both she and her husband, Steve Lawrence. I remember how fun they both were on The Carol Burnett Show. She has a wonderful voice. Could listen to her sing the phone book.
EPIC. Been a fan since I wore out my parent's copy of her 1957 Lp with "Too Close For Comfort" (...Don Costa's is still one of the best traditional pop arrangements ever IMHO). But this too is among my favorite performances by "La Gormé." Breathtaking.
Wasn't this at the point Studio 50 (later to become The Ed Sullivan Theater) began using Marconi Mark VII color cameras? Their quality did differ a bit from Norelco's PC-## cameras (according to Bobby Ellerbee's Eyes of a Generation site, the variant used in that studio was PC-71, with mumetal to shield from the magnetic fields elicited from subway power transformers next door).
I'm just curious as to why the number of views of this video is getting subtracted instead of added. Yesterday it was up to over 41,000 views. Now it is showing 38,203. This is a phenomenal performance by Eydie Gorme and several people I know have been talking about it. They said they can't stop watching it, so why are the number of views going down? I'm sure it has been viewed well over the number of times it is showing.
I am 19 years old and this is REAL music. NO ONE sings like this today unfortunately...
😅😅😅😅😅
Absolutely!
If she's still singing Barbra Streisand does !!!
Good for you, kid! I appreciate you.
I am so happy to hear that young people appreciate real musical talent. Have been a fan of Eydie forover 60 years!

This is so very true! She admitted that she learned everything from her idol _Judy Garland !!😱🤗
Eydie brings it at the end, always.
As a kid I wans't a big fan, but I am now, and have been for a good period of time.
😢😢😢A😢😅 lol l😊p😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Right there with you.

Right there with you.
This is extraordinary today and we knew it was extraordinary back in 1967. True talent is timeless.
THIS vocal is the equal of any....female live performance you will ever see!
Stunning Eydie!!

This is from a time when there were so many great female voices. I look back and say where did they go?

She was one of the greats of her time. The masterful phrasing, perfect pitch, delivery … Exquisite.
Right there with you!
Just amazing--singing and acting wise. She won a
well-deserved Grammy for the recording of this!!
This is the performance that made me really consider Eydie. What a truly gifted artist.. it's one thing to sing a song but quite another to act it and show real feeling through it..She was phenomenal ❤❤❤
Steve and Eydie were huge stars, back in the day.

Marvelous! She was amazing! 😊🤩
Eydie knocking it out of the park on Sullivan!
One of the best singers ever born!!! Love Eydie Gorme!!! Thank you so much for posting this!
… and to think primetime TV once was replete with these types of performances. Glad I’m old enough to experience it then.
Just a few seconds into the performance I got chills from the perfection.

Beautiful ❤
Haved loved hearing her sing this for 50+ years
❤❤❤
Wow, thanks you for appreciating this type of music at 19 years of age.😊❤
I’ve been waiting for HD Version of this while I type this I’m singing the song 💯💕

🎉 when talent and class mattered! RIP Eydie!
Great set of pipes!
Eydie is truly one of the great singers of her time and good password player
Loved Eydie and Steve as well as the variety shows of the 60’s and 70’s. Just a better age.
Her husband Steve Lawrence just passed away earlier this year in 2024. I think that Eydie Gorme passed away about ten years ago.
Nice!!! Really she was amazing! 😊❤😊
She is the best.
A bravura performance for the ages--AND this takes nothing at all away from Angela Lansbury's performance of it on stage in the MAME musical. Wonderful times 10!
lol....
Thanks for another Eddie Gorme ‘ clip with her excellent sing voice.
Have a great day!

Wow.A legend.
80 yrs here always love this woman.
I saw Steve and Eydie in person . Her latest hit at the time I saw her was "Blame it on the Bossa Nova " . They were incredible !!!
Best performance ever of this fantastic song from Jerry Herman's "Mame". Thank you for posting.

I don't know which is better, the orchestra or Eydie. Scale of 1-10 10 for both.
I so enjoyed both she and her husband, Steve Lawrence. I remember how fun they both were on The Carol Burnett Show. She has a wonderful voice. Could listen to her sing the phone book.
Which she once did on Carson! Also, a menu - in Spanish. 😀

This lady was just incredible. Can any of today's female "pop singers" do this?
And yes, I'm a old fart. (Go ahead, say it; "Okay, Boomer". )
Right there with you.
And how! 😊
👍❤️👍❤️
I think she drove a Thunderbird, about a 1966.
She could hit the Barbra notes!

Lady Gaga has nothing on Eydie.❤
Yeah.
She was my baby sitter.
Unlike mych of todays junk passing itself off as something?
She has a "that girl " hair style..people my
age will remember... (I'm 61)
