    That prep tool is excellent. I used coring tools like that when I did catv coax. I didn’t realize how relatively simple it is to do connectors on heliax. Thanks for sharing this.

      It definitely is a time saver. The tool itself is built for the Long haul with replaceable cutters. I know some will scoff at this but the connectors are not difficult to reuse if necessary. Thanks for watching !

    Great video. The tool is worth the money if you do a lot of these. They can be done by hand with a razor knife and a razor saw or even a hack saw, but not nearly as fast.
    Now doing them on a tower when your hands are cold and the wind is blowing and all you have to solder is a pyropen that doesn't want to stay lit...those are the fun days! Glad I don't have to do that much anymore.

    How do you set up the tool. It's adjusted for AL4RPV so it's not taking the jacket off of the LDF4 cable in connectorizing

    Great video on your installation where did you get your prep tools at?

    • @survivalcomms

      Thank you ! Tessco is a good choice. If you pay attention and know exactly what you want a great place to find good deals is ebay. Ebay and amazon have many vendors selling counterfeit goods. Thanks for watching !

    Can you direct me to site where they have decent prices for connectors and the prep tools for this coax ?

      Your best bet is to get the stuff off of auctions or auction sites . Buying at retail Tessco.com isn't overly pricey. Thanks for watching !

    Sorry I'm new with this stuff. What type of RF connector is this may I ask? Thanks!

    • @survivalcomms
      @survivalcomms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a Type N connector. Thanks for watching !

    Not many ratings for almost 9k views. Nice job.
    I like to put the O ring on before messing with the pin
    so I don't contaminate it later. Not that it really matters much.

    Are the cutting tools expensive?

    • @survivalcomms
      @survivalcomms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rotary tool is about 200 bucks. I have seen them on ebay much cheaper however. Razor saws and razor knives are cheap and work for heliax prep just fine if you dont plan on doing a bunch of connections. Thanks for watching !

    • @joeblow8593
      @joeblow8593 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I only have a few connectors to install. Been looking for a how to video using conventional tools. Anyway, great video and thanks...

    • @survivalcomms

      @@joeblow8593 The connector attachment is the same. Measure 2" back and carefully circufentially trim the outer jacket and remove. This exposes the corrugated outer conductor. Pick a point 5mm or more and using a razor saw cut the outer conductor on a land and not a groove. Be careful not to cut or score center conductor. Remove foam from center conductor with a durable plastic straight edge. Trim and square center conductor to 5mm. Small Oring to 5th corrugation and slip on colleted nut. Flare the edge of the outer conductor to match the profile of the face of the nut. Complete Install as in the video . I hope this helps and thanks for watching !

    Great video...I have to say, talked me out of doing it myself. Just the type of tools needed to do this is not worth the added cost of already pricey coax.
    Excellent job on the installation nonetheless!

      Thank you ! Even with hand tools it isn't a bad job if you take your time. The real pain out of working with this feedline is having a 500' coil of it (not on a reel) and cutting it into 100' sections by yourself :) Thanks for watching !

  • @GUERRILLACOMM
    @GUERRILLACOMM 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    No, no, no ,no! Nobody rates a cordless drill prep tool unless you do hundreds of those with hand tools only. lol. Just kidding around, nice vid as always.

      LOL You are right without the fun of razor saw heliax circumcision experience it would be easy to underappreciate the roto prep :) I was quite gleeful when I got it. Good to hear from you and I hope all is well in your world. Thank you and thanks for watching !

    Only one comment I would have put the watt meter between the radio and the cable, then put the dummy load on the end of the cable. So that I can look at reflected power in the cable. You could move the meter to the end of the cable later to check the actual loss. I find looking for a reflections id far more important than loss,
