  • This week we visit Underhill, and incredible hobbit-home like, eco-cave house built into a hillside. The off-the-grid house is cleverly constructed to resemble a cave. With no electricity in the house, the stone, wood and rustic features truly make you feel like you’re stepping back in time.

    I Grew up with Grahams children and watched it slowly get built from the clay pit cut out in the hill in the 1980s up to how it is today it was a great place to play as children I hope that this inspires others to do things similar i plain to do one of my own that my children can experience i hope

      What a great memory that must be and he seems like such an interesting man. I hope he is doing well these days and able to continue to enjoy this treasure. I noticed he seemed to have health problems in the video. He certainly had some brilliant ideas about building this place. I would love to be able to have a meal with him and his family and learn more about the place and if there is anything he would do differently. I hope to have a similar place one day.

      I would love to get in touch with Mr. Graham, so my husband and I can pick his brain on building our own hobbit house almost like his, except I'd like mine with a little more room, other than that, I'm totally in love with the ingenuity in his build. Tell me, is there any way to get in touch with him, even on FaceTime? I'm ready to build my forever hobbit home, as soon as my youngest goes to college (Yay!!!!).

    Bryce -
    You're extremely talented at getting folks to open up and share their respective experiences; including valuable details, about the project, that could have otherwise been easily overlooked. Additionally, you're an awesome host! You have a great presence and I enjoy how you always have an epilogue, at the end, to wrap things up. It makes such a complete experience for your viewers. You should have a talent agent/manager submit these videos to major television broadcasters worldwide; not limited to but including The BBC, BBC America, PBS, The Discovery Channel, TLC, HGTV, et al.
    Wishing all the best to you and your crew!

    i can´t believe the sheer amount of creativity this guy used to solve the problems of his build and make it absolutely awesome to boot - i looked into building cave houses a while back, and it was all about tons of rebar and wire mesh to build the dome shape, and he? just uses a HUGE load of sand, with the added bonus of an incredible stone-mosaic ceiling. genius!!

      +Huni Buni Natural? what are you talking about.

    • @hunibuni
      @hunibuni 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dereka Heath a natural life style. usually a natural life style goes hand in hand with off grid living. maybe you have a natural life style already i couldn't tell by your profile pic.
      But I was asking because I have tried to get some of my family interested in off grid living but they do not have natural life styles yet.
      Understanding how composting works, septic systems, grey water, black water, general waste management etc I worry about the effect unnatural habits would have in an off grid situation, for instance, hair chemicals, chemical cleaners, toiletries, can be disastrous in those types of systems.
      On grid those types of things are not handled sustainably and are usually moved out of sight so people don't concern themselves with the effect they have on the environment (let alone themselves).
      But off grid in your own closed system where you are responsible for all of your own needs and systems, the effects are instantly noticeable.
      When thinking about inviting friends and family with unnatural lifestyles I had to consider if they'd be willing to make the change to completely natural living in order to even be compatible with off grinding.

    • @derekah.3359
      @derekah.3359 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Huni Buni Saying is one thing and actually living like that is another. I am under the understanding that, once upon a time, we here in America and all over the globe lived without telephones, lights and other electronics and etc. But people are still living. It all goes with prioritizing, what are the basic needs that we need in order to survive. We need food, water, and shelter and each other, that is it.
      im not currently living off grid. However, i am from and right down here now in East Texas where there are miles upon miles of trees and vegetation. I have family members who are INDIGENOUS, to off grid living, they still catch their food, draw water from a well, cook outside, matter of fact, they only go in the house to sleep other than that, they are outside ALL day long, still living in log cabins, they dont need perms, they are black and native indian folks with bone straight hair, what perm? they make their own soaps, shampoos, candles, makeup. i have a cousin who is 81, never has been sick a day in her life and still works, she was raised by shamans and they taught her natural medicines and magics. though i was raised by dignitaries we do have, what we call here in East Texas- "folks from the sticks" in my family who CHOOSE that lifestyle. they live in ramshackled shacks, but those that dont know them, know that the shacks they live in are on 18- several 100 acres of their own land that they get oil and mineral rights and they have over $1 million in their bank accounts or $125k buried under their living room floors under a coffee table held up by milk crates or bricks and a piece of ply wood. That's right, that is my family.
      i dont care how people think about me, i know what type of family and people i come from.

      Dereka Heath You are lucky to have such well connected people around you, by that I mean connected to the earth. No one needs perm regardless of their hair texture. & so called black people are indigenous but this is off topic for the place we are talking. I'd love to talk to you more outside of here if you'd like.

    The Pioneers of the American West built sod houses from blocks of prairie cut out with square shovels.
    They would stack the chunks, grass roots and all, like bricks to make walls. Tree branches and saplings covered in sod and/or thatch was generally used for roofing where lumber was unavailable.
    They'd dig into hillside and just have to make one wall and one roof.
    Where it was flat, They do a "dug-out", Digging down into the prairie gave them protection from the elements. Sometimes they'd back a wagon down into the dug out pit because it was cooler. Place some brush branches on to top for day shade. 20 degrees cooler than the surrounding surface. CAVEAT: Rattlers (that's Western Diamond Back Rattle Snakes in city-speak) seem to like coolness on really hot days also.

      If I remember correctly, it was Thorin who said on his deathbed that if more people treasured the simpler things like food, drink and friendship, the world would be a much better place. I'm paraphrasing, but that was the message behind his words. He was so honored to have Bilbo in his Company and he honored and respected the hobbit, realizing Bilbo had taught him something very important. He was saddened that he had failed to learn it until it was too late. But I think about that message a lot, and how nice it would be to live as a hobbit.
