After 2112, Rush had earned their creative freedom after nearly getting dropped by their label. With this follow-up release, Rush went prog wild and totally indulged without any record execs breathing down their necks. A great choice and reaction guys!

Hey Nick and Lex. My name is Rich. I'm 50 (just turned 50 last month) and I have been a Rush fan since 1979, when at age 6, my older neighbor played for me 2112 and I never looked back. As with many other Rush fans will say, they are my band. They've been my life's soundtrack. They're why I became a musician. They are my reason for having a vast vocabulary, both music wise and language wise. As true with many, they have meant more to me through my life than I can possibly put into words. I only just discovered your channel recently, but have totally enjoyed watching your reactions to the greatest band ever. It gives me great joy to watch people discover this hidden treasure for the first time. The joy you both exhibit gives me feelings of years past when I heard a new Rush song for the first time. It is wonderful to witness. Thank you both for sharing your musical journey with us. My appreciation for what you are doing goes beyond Rush. I just noticed you've done reactions to Pat Metheney. How awesome is that?!!! I've seen him live many times and look forward to watching your reactions. Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't add a couple of requests. As you know, some of Rush's lyrics deal with difficult subject matter. I know you usually don't pay attention to lyrics on a first listen, so be forewarned, if you do react to this request, that the lyrical content is very heavy. Please react to "The Pass". It is not only one of my personal favorites, but they have spoken often about how it was one of their personal favorites too. A couple of more, both with intense subjects, Losing It and The Manhattan Project. I hope to comment again in the future. Keep doing what you're doing. Best wishes.

That ending was like an abstract medley of many of their songs. They rhythmic themes and tempo changes were much smoother than what we find on Cygnus-1 and other parts of Hemispheres. It's like they have so much they want to get out they just meld it all together with a variety of rhythms, tempos, and key changes. The gaps of silence are uniquely used to bring emphasis and clarity to their rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic themes. Really unique musical artistry.

One of my favorite All Time Bands! I love this entire album, it has a unique sound and atmosphere and is the perfect graduation from 2112 which was very Sci-Fi sounding then with "Kings" being a more baroque/classical/fantasy feel (but also ends in a sci-fi opus Cygnus X-1) I heard this album right when it came out when I was 12, it helped shape my musical interests for the rest of my life. Can't love them enough

Lex made such a fo sho comment about listening to Hemispheres for the first time. I’m 65 and a hardcore RUSH fan since hearing their debut album. Instrumentation was being experimented with so there was always new sounds and effects being unleashed. RUSH was ahead of the curve when it came to this. So YES Lex you hit the nail on the head. And, yes I listened to this album at night, no lights on, wearing headphones and being in bed. What an experience that will never be repeated. I wouldn’t trade my birthdate for anything if it meant I would loose these years. It was truly a magical time to be alive. ✌️♥️🎸

Early Geddy’s voice was freaking sick. You might not like the tone of his voice but that dude could positively sing his ass while off while playing the bass and synthesizer at the same time. Fun fact: They were originally going to call this album 'Closer to the Heart' and release the album on red vinyl. Its interesting how the last thing we hear on the record is a beating heart and how Neil's lyrical themes naturally expanded into contemplating the nature of the heart/mind paradigm of the two hemispheres of the brain on the followup. The 'thump- thump...thump-thump motif that appears throughout Hemispheres...this guy was a f#cking genius. And the other two guys probably are as well,😅

Thanks for mentioning the music themes from this track that appear throughout the album, there are several that I didn't pick up on til now!! The opening riff from Cinderella Man is taken from part of the opening and closing riff and I didn't even connect that Cygnus section towards the end with this solo figure, I think its in 11/8 or 12 or 13, (not sure if its a combination of these, Lol) But really fun to find easter eggs 45 years later! 😅

RUSH's earliest material built the foundations for the subsequent sounds - & remember, this band write their albums in 'Chapters' - their entire back catalogue is as reading a well-worn favourite piece of literature - you always have to revisit; & I agree, each time you listen to a RUSH composition, there is always something new to discover. I've been a diehard fan since their commercial inception in 1974, & (thankfully) had the opportunity to have been on all but two tours - the t-shirts from those early days are so worn & threadbare, but I'll never relinquish them - you can just about read the tour dates on the back; even now, they're conversation pieces - from younger fans thru' to individuals from my peer group; & yes, this was one of their finest concept albums. Thank you for this reaction - keep safe & well, both,
    Andrew 🙂

The intro was recorded outside in the studio courtyard, so the birds, etc, were actual natural sounds. Alex' guitar is not being panned back and forth. Geddy had his synth on one side, and Neil had his percussio on the other, and Alex walked back and forth between them.
So in the months between 2112 and recording this album, Neil doubled the size of his kit, Alex bought his doubleneck and Geddy learned to play synths and Taurus foot pedals.

This was the first Rush song I listened to back in 1982 after my Aunt leant me some of her records as I was getting into music. I was instantly hooked - the transition from classical guitar to the heavy main theme caught me then and catches me now. I have been a fan ever since hearing this song - have all the albums, seen them in concert (although not as often as I should have done). They have seen me through good times and bad. You shoulda known I'd be here for a Rush video. I thought you had done all the best early Rush ("Rush" thru "Grace Under Pressure" - my favorite Rush era), but I was surprised to see you have missed a few great ones. Notably (in rough order of greatness): "The Fountain of Lamneth"; "Anthem"; and "The Analog Kid". Also check out "Rush - Finding My Way (Live On Don Kirshner's Rock Concert - 1974)". This is from the 1st album, so not progressive, more like Led Zeppelin, but still awesome. If you want to hear what was probably their most commercial song (it's still good), check out "New World Man" from the "Signals" album. This song is to Rush what "Owner of a Lonely Heart" was to Yes. I didn't appreciate "The Fountain of Lamneth" when I was young, but I do now. It encapsulates a human life from birth to death, and the last words spoken (written by Neil) are particularly poignant after his death.

When you combine musical chops, creativity, longevity, output, and evolving sound quite simply the best Canadian band out there in a field of giants. For me Bruce Cockburn a close second. Nice trip down memory lane and great reaction. Cheers

I remember a friend bought me this cassette back in the early 80s. It starts with this song, and when he sings "closer to the heart", I thought the labels on the cassette were off because the first song on side B was/is "Closer to the Heart", the song! I do love this album - you should listen to it with the lyrics...very relevant for today!

AFTK is not a concept album but the title track is an excellent Keynote song for the album. It does perfectly set the tone for the album and, indeed, the title of "closer to the heart" does appear in the lyrics of the song. Yes, there is "connective tissue" with all the songs of the album found in this first track -- it's almost uncanny how they were able to pull that off without AFTK being an official "Overture", the way they had on 2112 -- but it is not a part of a connected-concept song. But, incredible track. It got dropped from the set list after the tour, probably because "The Trees" took it's place in the set. But on Rush's bootlegs and official live releases from the tour -- on Different Stages and on the 40th Anniversary release of the album -- you can hear live versions of the song. Great stuff!

I love you guys' reactions - but I cannot believe you never reacted to the LIVE version of Xanadu - the BEST LIVE PERFORMANCE OF ALL TIME!?!?!
    RUSH - Xanadu - Live In Montreal 1981 (2021 HD Remaster 60fps)
Alex Lifeson - 6 string guitar, 12 string guitar, pedal synthesizer, volume pedal; Geddy Lee - Vocals, bass guitar, 6 string guitar, foot pedal synthesizer, electric piano/synthesizer; Neil Peart - Lyrics, Drums, orchestra bells, tubular bells, wind chimes, crotales, timbales, timpani, gong, temple blocks, bell tree, triangle, and melodic cowbells.
Based on Kubla Khan (Xanadu) by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Coleridge composed his poem, ‘Kubla Khan’, in a state of semi-conscious trance either in the autumn of 1797 or the spring of 1798 and published in 1816. The whole poem is pervaded by an atmosphere of dream and remains in the form of a vision. The vision embodied in Kubla Khan was inspired by the perusal of the travel book, Purchas His Pilgrimage. Coleridge had taken a dose of opium as an anodyne, and his eyes closed upon the line in the book, “At Zanadu Kubla Khan built a pleasure palace.” But this opened his creative vision, and the poem of about 200 lines was composed in this state of waking dream. On being fully awake, he wrote the poem down. The theme of the poem is unimportant. It describes the palace built by Kubla Khan, the grandson of Chengis Khan, the great rule of central Asia.

This song is a pain in the ass to sing. This was young geddy at the height of his vocal powers. His vibrato when he hits the high notes is freakin bonkers. So hard to do. When i was younger i was able to hit the highs for a short time in my 20s but never with that tight vibrato he had. But he didnt have it long. By the 80s he wasnt able to do it like this anymore.

Rush is my all time favorite, hands down. There are so many reasons to like those guys, I'm missing them, but it had to end someplace. One of the standouts is the way they treated the fans. Nothing spoke louder than what happened with Vaper trails, if you know the story. To make a long story very short, the guys went back into the mastering studio and remastered that album to make it right and insisted that vouchers be granted to all who bought the first release that was a train wreck so that it could be replaced for free with the good redone release. I was one of many who got a voucher after purchasing the original release and discovering how awful it was.
Another stand out to the guys is how humble they are and that way from beginning to now. Just genuine decent humans.
As huge a rush fan as I am I still have not heard anything past Vapor trails! I have the albums sitting on my shelf and have not cracked them open for some reason. I'll get to then eventually and you guys may get to them before me.

So, I was 16 4 weeks before the start of my Junior year in HS when my parents out of the blue told us we were moving from Southern CA to St. Louis. Say What?!?! While I think living in CA is insane I had it going on. They ripped me away from everything I love. St. Louis was a swamp backwater with book burnings & the Klan advertising in the newspapers. This was in ‘77. I hated it. It was was so backwards & ignorant. However all I heard were students going on about two bands-Styx & RUSH. ???? Huh? FTK was my introduction to them & it’s still my favorite album. As for 2112 it’s a masterpiece but I am definitely NOT a morning person & my sister 0:00 would play it full blast at 5:30a.m. while we were getting ready for school. No one one like me wants to hear Geddy Lee scream We are the Priests that early. Knock down drag outs ensued, sometimes requiring maternal intervention. Closer To The Heart is my probably my favorite RUSH song. As for t-shirts I have the pentagram one.

0:15 you're doing "Rush-Again". It almost sounds like Rushagen. Must be some new band that I've never heard of 😛
I feel that their peak was from 2112 to Moving Pictures. Their later stuff is very good too, as is their earlier stuff, but just like YES, I think their 4th-8th albums were their best, while the peak for YES was their 3rd-8th albums, but I still enjoy their earlier and later stuff too. Now back to Rushagen 🙂

Check out Caress of Steel, it's got chunks of what the band was growing into. The concept era, from Neal, yet their musical direction. I loved it for what it was, awesome entertainment. Critics, panned it. But rush was never radio friendly back then. They got their music out in the early day's from Touring. Then fan's loved what they were doing and hearing. And the fans just grew more and more, until 2112,. Then rush headlined their concerts, and grew from their music, not the critics or radio. This album, was crucial for rush in that it's as if they were experimenting on this album, which then produced,2112. Geddy even said, without Caress of Steel, there's no 2112!. He also said if there's no permanent waves, there's no moving pictures album. I listen to these idiots, who say it's this or it's that. It's music! It's what entertains you. I don't understand how people can say that what they hear means you must follow suit. It's all subjective. What I like someone else might hate or can't stand. That's perfectly fine, music is not meant to be tamed, it's meant to be enjoyed, by the ear of the beholder. Don't ever let anyone tell you, what you have to listen to or like based on what they think and do. Rush fought against that way of thinking, their whole career. Anyways, check this album out you can detect the old, trying to mold into the new, both in neals writing, and of course the music. I don't care if people thought it was a choppy, not flowing album. I loved it. I think you might as well. But as I say judge for yourselves, and your own ears. Love you guy's, or should I say, guy and gal, hahaha 😅

I've never seen an a capella group reaction on your channel. Don't know if you just have no interest in that genre or no one has suggested it to you. Just curious. It's not all covers. Home Free in particular has a LOT of original stuff and funny compilations of songs. Their last album was 10 originals out of 12 songs. Many of their songs about sociatal issues.
Not a criticism in any way. Enjoy your channel.
