Carl Palmer of ELP Talks about his "ROCK SCENE"

- Carl Palmer started playing drums at the age of 11 years old. He comes from a long line of musicians in his family going all the way back to his great grandmother who was a classical guitar player. While in school, he left school played in numerous orchestras. He could read music very well & found too easy. He desired a path more exciting and was invited to join a rhythm and blues band called the King Bees, which he did and he never looked back.
While playing with the King Bees, he was spotted by Chris Farlowe who had a #1 single in England called “Out of Time” which was written by Keith Richards & Mick Jagger. Chris told Carl that if he ever needed the work, he would have a job with him. When the K.B.’s finished their obligations, it was a week before Carl finished school; which ended on a Friday. He left home that Sunday and auditioned for Chris on Wednesday. He was now in Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds. He stayed with them until he was 17.
Carl then started playing sessions and met Arthur Brown. He joined the Crazy World of Arthur Brown and before long, had a #1 album and single which brought Carl to America for the first time. He eventually left Arthur Brown to form Atomic Rooster. While recording (a #1 single “Tomorrow Night”) he got a call fromGregg Lake and Keith Emerson, who were looking for a drummer.
Carl went to see what Gregg & Keith were doing, at which time they made him an offer that he couldn’t refuse. Just like that, we had Emerson, Lake and Palmer. They amazed audiences and sold millions of records until disbanding in 1978.
Carl took a few years off. When he reemerged, in 1981, he joined one of the first “super-groups” called Asia. They rocked their way through the 80’s until disbanding in 1991. Carl rejoined E.L.P. and played until 1998. Carl then formed a prog. rock power trio which he still plays with until today called Carl Palmer’s E.L.P. Legacy. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน

Carl is one of the greatest drummers of all time.
I cannot agree more and for his age is is the best ever.

A band from my teenage years - so sad to only have Carl left today.
I was lucky enough to see ELP in the 70's at Madison Square Garden several times. When Keith and Greg passed it really hurt to loose such great fellows. Again I was à :"Lucky Man" to see Carl and the ELP Legacy show and meet Carl after the show. He is a true gentleman. ELP was the best "Then and Now" and thank you Carl for keeping the greatest music for me alive!

Wow, I expected the young cool laid back Carl. And we get the speedfreak Carl! For a few secs there I was worried chemicals might be involved. Then when he paused and remembered that Madison Sq G reminded him of E L P and Ludwig drums, he looked down and had a look that was so touching, just as he remembered his bandmates with whom he created untold magic and musical joy. From then on I was up to his speed, he doesn't waste a second and is a blunt as it comes. Delightfully frank, and one of the great drum legends. Will look for more chats with this fascinating man involved.
I met Carl in Salt Lake City in the early 70’s. He was so kind to take time to talk to a star struck teenage musician. He was swimming laps in a hotel swimming pool. Keith was reading poolside. He said hi but I didn’t want to interrupt him.
Being a guitarist I really wanted to meet Greg, but he was in jail for skinny dipping in the hotels fountain.
ELP was the first concert I ever bought my own ticket for. Camped out on the sidewalk of the Salt Palace for 2 nights and got front row seats.
I'm from Salt Lake and was at that concert. The best concert I have ever seen. Simply blown away by these three incredible and technically precise musicians.
I remember Greg thanking the SLPD for letting him out of jail on time!

Loved the full throttle, no regrets, no apologies, no hesitation, no BS, talk. So refreshing to hear in 2020. Carl may burn out, but he's not going to rust out.
I met Carl in New Jersey at Sam Ash when he did a clinic in the 90s. I don't get star-struck and I didn't that day but I was still nervous. I worked at Sam Ash and all of us at Sam Ash had to make sure he got what he needed to do the clinic. I got to hang out with him a bit in the stock room but what I never told him was how in the 70s, I was an ELP head. I lived ate and breathed Emerson Lake and Palmer. Carl was such a down to earth guy that day and so accommodating to me and others. The exact opposite of what was supposed to be. The clinic went great and I realized that the people I held as idols were just people. Some good and some not so good. Carl was the best and obviously still is. Thanks for the memories and the music Carl.

Being a halfass drummer myself, catching Carl is pure joy. Dude can play.
He still looks wonderful and I enjoyed watching him play drums so much. He really put his heart and soul into it. Each member was a stellar musician of their craft. Thank goodness we can still watch and listen to them. When I find this world is getting to be too much, I listen to them and feel the anxiety and stress melt away as it transport me to a more peaceful place. The world has been blessed by their talents.
I agree (this was 2015) but last week he thanked everyone for wishing him a happy 73rd birthday.
He looked thin gaunt and ill.

Palmer, of course, is the sole survivor of one of the best rock bands ever, not just prog rock ELP was sort of a Cream with a lead keyboard instead of guitar. 3 peerless musicians, anyway

I played drums early on. Pulled away by other projects. But loved ELP, Atomic Rooster, King Crimson, Asia, CWAB, etc. Brits rock!🇬🇧
That is so true. Cream was one of my very favorites...including the Doors, and Pink Floyd. There were SO many of these great bands during the 60's and 70's. These guys were true poets, who told us a story, made us think and still today, take us on a journey in our minds. We were very fortunate indeed to have been entertained by these wonderful musicians in our youth and now, younger generations are discovering what their parents listened to back in the day.
I was privileged to see his show in Stowe Vermont a couple of years back. The man is still hitting them hard and accurate. The volume was a bit much but the room wasn't full. It was a mountain road night club and most there were old fuckers like myself.
Respectfully, Cream and ELP were of different musical milieus, not saying I’m the only person here to have lived through it as a drummer and fan of both. Technically and musically, Palmer was a whole other world from Baker’s… who was of course instrumental in people taking notice of the drummer’s contribution to the music.

Well, he has been chosen the no. 1, world's best drummer, by several famous music magazines, for many consecutive years, he received many awards, and he was the drummer of the world's best band ever.

I find it fascinating that musicians from the Golden Age of Rock, like Carl Palmer, were primarily influenced by other genres like jazz, folk, or classical music. It shows how pioneering these artists were, as nothing in music history had ever sounded like Rock 'n' Roll from the 60's & early 70's.

Same. Carl the best ever. Keith was such a melodic and powerful drummer even if not as technically perfect as carl. But no one else was either. The first time I heard Tommy was the first time I realized how great rock drumming could be. Than ELP took rock drumming to place never seen before or after.

Good interview with Carl. I was lucky enough to meet him a couple of times for a chat after a gig, a normal nice guy. Funny you should mention Kenny Clare. He lived up by me at Meir Heath in Stoke on Trent, I think he was making drums then, but do remember him in the windmill pub next door to him and he's wife walking there Afghan dogs every day. Carl is one of the great drummer, my other favourite was Joe Morello, my favourite band of all time. ELP.

Buddy Rich, who in my opinion was the greatest drummer of all time, mentioned both Neil Peart and Carl Palmer were his favorite rock drummers. Carl is an exceptional drummer I saw live with ELP at Massey Hall maybe 10 years ago. It surprised me that Carl was in the The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown- band. that band.. Atomic Rooster I knew about. Carl has had a great career. BTW, the early mastering of ELP's records on vinyl on ELP's Manticore label were well mastered to begin with so getting reissues is not required unless you can't find the original pressings in playable condition. I forgot that ELP technically split up in the late 70's after the Love Beach album came out I believe. Carl's recall of his musical history is unreal. I find Paul McCartney also has exceptional recall of his career. RIP Keith and Greg.
Interesting that you say Carl Palmer was one of Buddy Rich's favourite drummers. Rich, in fact, wasn't very happy with the fact that Palmer repeatedly 'nicked' his own work, especially on ELP's first album. As a matter of fact, one time, when he had a chance to sit down with Carl, the first thing Rich said to him was, "So what have you stole from me today?"
@James Smith I agree. Somehow, some way Brain Salad Surgery has parts of the album sounding too congested, low freq range, not a lot of detail. Remastering that record "correctly" would be and is impossible because you can't improve on the source material. There are some parts that sound pretty good like Carl's drumming, Benny The Bouncer is well recorded. Doesn't the ending of Brain Salad still sound pretty amazing and ahead of it's time? I'm talking about the lead out part on side 2 with Keith's synth panning from one channel to the other.. I saw Greg live back in the mid 70's single his song Lucky Man totally solo, no instruments. He wasn't even playing guitar, very cool. Greg had a great voice. His work with King Crimson then ELP. He could really belt the tunes. I like how that song was associated with the early career of Malcolm Mcdowell as well.

He's only 71 now in 2021. And all that energy! Probably the most under-utilized musician in modern history.

You, Greg & Keith in Concord, CA was my 4th time seeing you 3 & I yelled out, “Carl Palmer,” but felt like it hurt Greg, after he’d done magnificently, yet I was a drummer in the early 70’s that felt the virtuosity of your percussion, in an all out art form, dreaming of what I could have been, namely you, only in dreams.

He doesn’t seem.to get the acclaim that Bonzo Bonham gets, or Ginger Baker, or Keith Moon for that matter, which i don’t get. It’s subjective, of course , but Cream, Led Zeppelin and ELP are among my favorite all time rock bands; note each had talented bass players and outstanding drummers

The other bands you mentioned were more mainstream so maybe the drummers were more popular. Not everyone liked Progressive Rock so maybe Palmer and say Bill Bruford were not as well-recognized as they should have been.
Both are incredible and are my personal favorites.
Madison square garden has the best acoustics for concerts. And that video of elp playing in the snow In Toronto stadium is awesome.

My thought too Jimmy. Many say or have said, Neil Piert of Rush was the best, but in my heart and seeing Carl perform live as ELP, I saw a master of percussion. And at Carl's age of 60, he can still jam. I forgot all about Asia. Yes, he was their drummer.

Very surprised to hear Carl state 'In the Hot Seat' from 1994 was an album ELP were happy with. Keith's ongoing focal dystonia meant he had to overdub his left and right hand keyboard parts separately. The trio don't even play on all the tracks and Disney songwriters were hired to provide some of the material. As befitting the ironic cover art: it's a trainwreck

Palmer is the best
Palmer and Neil Peart, two of the best drummers ever, yet Palmer doesn't even hit the top ten list on a lot of polls, very underrated.
Neil leaves me cold, probably because Rush doesn't float my boat. His solos are fine, but the music he plays behind is just not interesting to me.
Looks like they grabbed him right after a show. He's still perspiring, and sounds like he's in a hurry to get going back to the hotel.
