Driving horses for commercial carriage work - can you buy experience?

This pair of Lipizzaner geldings had already been broken before being sent to us. Their owner wanted to use them for weddings and funerals etc, but they needed further schooling in order to bring them up to the standards required for commercial work. This film shows how they were to begin with (as well as being hard-mouthed, they were shying at road markings, traffic barriers, bridges and water, fidgeting when asked to stand still, not being happy using breeching - all things that commercial horses should have no issues with) and then as they progress through their training, showing them working together happily as a pair and gaining confidence in their work and their surroundings.
People often buy "ready-made" horses for commercial work - those that have been broken already or have worked in harness before - but as this video shows, it does not always mean they will be suitable for the intended job. Although this pair could be driven, and have no problem with simply being in harness, there are certain little problems that need working on before they could be trusted to work commercially on the roads and around members of the public.
These horses were not youngsters, and had plenty of driving "miles under their belts" but this did not mean that they were safe, confident and happy in harness. We needed to educate them further so that they became a better pair of horses all round.

This guy is amazing when he’s training the horses. He’s kind and fair but won’t take any nonsense. He exposes the animals to EVERYTHING. I wished he worked the horses in my neighbourhood! If you had an opportunity it would be an honour to learn from him.

I enjoyed seeing the end result of a pair of tails swinging along in a relaxed fashion. Such a difference to the start of the video. I can't believe these two were commercial. They were a danger to themselves and others. Nice singing, Barry. And even nicer driving!

Today, in my retired years, I'd love to carriage with a brace of well-behaved lovelies. Such a pleasure to watch you handle this young team. It is so rewarding to watch you work with their energy and transform them into supple performers near the end of the outing. I'm so jealous to consider being near the end of the day to remove the harness, wash and brush them while making certain the family stores of vodka, olives stuffed with Bleau Cheese and maybe a cracker or two continue to meet standards. There's nothing like the sight and fragrance of horses to calm the spirit and encourage us to appreciate our blessings. I truly enjoy and appreciate your channel.

The progression of watching Barry's videos...admiring as obstacles come up and recognition of more (as of different colored painted areas), laughing at the one horses horror of suddenly being asked to go into water, noting the temper tantrum at being asked to stand-still at an intersection, the horses starting to trot in matched timing and calming as they travel... a tail swish on the right and definitely not on the left and then progress...a whole transforming view.

nice work with them, i can see one is allot more shy etc, i know they are a pair but to help the one who is more shy with standing still etc do you do individual work with that horse or would you work on it with a pair at all times?

you have such wonderful places to drive... you don't find the concussion of trotting on pavement hard on them???? EVER USE BOOTS ??? I am partial to the Cavello boot, sturdy, long lasting and very easy to put on and off... the road crews around here are too free with rough stone
All the horses in for training are shod.
However, all Rhi's personal horses are barefoot (and do plenty of driving and riding) and occasionally use Scoot boots.
That's why my family decided to get 2 horses

I've noticed horses leaving 'trail markers', does no one complain ? or do you pick them up ???
They are generally gone fairly quickly with the weather we have! Nobody complains, although we are aware they can be a safety hazard for motorcyclists. On the plus side, seeing droppings on the road can alert drivers that horses frequent the area and remind them to check their speed around corners and keep an eye out for us!
On the very first obstacle, the painted circle, I would have stopped or slowed my team until the car was not opposite us at that point. The near horse pushed the off horse into the other lane. Could have caused a crash between team and car. I always look ahead for cars and spooks, but then I drive a team of Arabians.
What does the fact that they're Arabians have to do with spooking? Arabians are much more aware of their surroundings, certainly, but it's a lack of confidence in or trust of their handler that causes them to be reactive. Don't blame any issues you have on the fact that they're Arabians - any failure on the part of a horse is in response to how they're handled.

Did one of those horse make a mess on the road? In other drop manure. Was it pick up. It should be horse manure is alkaline and not good for roads.
Hi, we do not pick up horse manure from the road, it would be more dangerous to keep stopping to pick its up and it quickly gets dispersed and washes away.

Never understood the whole thing about 'riding bits' and 'driving bits' and blah blah blah. If you can ride in a snaffle, you can drive in a snaffle, and if you can't ride in a snaffle, why not?
Golden if you were to drive in a curb, a western curb bit, With the shanks and leverage. The horse would become confused because it would pull evenly on BOOTH side of his mouth because you can't neck reign while driving. That's really the only difference. You can't brive with a bit meant for neck reigning because it confuses the horse.
A snaffle bit will pull through the mouth on a driving horse. A driving bit has solid shanks on both sides just to prevent that from happening. The reins are not attached to the shanks. Driving and riding is very different and involves different training for the horse. I have both riding and driving horses and they are trained differently. A driving horse is trained to move into pressure in order to move the shanks of the cart to make turns. A riding horse is taught to move away from pressure so you can guide the horse with your legs.
@@HobbyHillsVideos true. I cut my teeth w/ Standardbreds, and they're usually driven w/ a half-cheek snaffle to keep the bit from pulling thru the mouth. Bet that's why Barry usually rigs them with cheek guards, to keep the plain snaffle in place.
