Both oboe and bassoon are super underrated. Double reed instruments get no love... For woodwinds, all of it goes to saxophones and maybe clarinets. That and the bassoon can't project over the rest of the band/orchestra and you can never hear it. I'm a tenor saxophonist now also playing oboe and I really want to at least try bassoon, but it's so hard to find good content about it, yet it's easy to find stuff on violin, Saxophone, piano, and especially guitar.
Every section in the orchestra has an underrated instrument. For woodwinds, I agree that bassoons are underrated (alongside contrabassoon, oboe, and Cor Anglais). Brass? Easily the euphonium. Strings? Obviously the viola.
I miss playing the bassoon. I started out as a child playing the clarinet, and then learned to play the saxophone at the request of my junior high school band director. Specifically, alto sax - all of his alto players were moving on to high school, and he had nobody to play alto sax in the jazz band. So since I was the 1st-chair clarinet player, he tagged me to be his new 1st alto player in the next year's jazz band. Being a pretty good clarinet player (as far as being a 13-year-old clarinet player), I learned to play the sax in about three days. (Dear God, can there be another instrument easier to play than the saxophone? I could have just bent my clarinet and called it a saxophone, the sax was so easy to learn!) Then, one day, toward the end of my 8th-grade year, I was poking around in the school instrument room, and decided to open an odd-looking instrument case. That case was long and wide and flat. I popped it open, and found an odd assortment of instrument parts. Already being a woodwind player, it was plain to me that this was a woodwind instrument, but I had no idea what it was. So I called my band teacher over and asked, "Mr. Ager, what IS this?" Mr. Ager said, "That's a bassoon." I'd never heard of a bassoon before, but I said, "Can I learn to play this?" Mr. Ager's eyes lit up like he was suddenly on fire! "Oh yes!" he said. "You take that home, and we'll get you signed up for summer band lessons!" Of course, this being junior high school time, I still had to pretty much teach myself how to play the thing. Summer band teachers don't tend to know how to play every instrument. Mr. Ager was a clarinet/woodwind guy, but both of my high school band directors were brass players. But I spent 9th grade playing bassoon in the junior high "concert band" and alto sax in the "stage band". I'd abandoned the clarinet by this point (though, thanks to my now-advanced age and the benefit of TH-cam, I've seen enough of Benny Goodman to wish I had stuck with the clarinet) Then I got to high school, now playing only alto sax and bassoon. Under my first high school band teacher, I ended up quitting the bassoon for a year. That band director was obsessed with marches, and almost all of my bassoon parts consisted of either playing whole notes or playing I-IV "oom-pah " lines, basically doubling the tuba player. Boooorrrring! The only good bassoon part that band teacher ever gave me was John Philip Sousa's "Black Horse Troop" march. The bassoon part on that one rocked. The summer before my senior year in HS, my family relocated to a new town. And the high school had the standard "wind ensemble" band (which was entirely separate from the marching band, thank God), where I ended up playing alto sax. And I ended up playing guitar in the jazz ensemble. And ... I started out as 2nd bassoon in the school orchestra! Yes, this was a high school orchestra that actually had TWO bassoon players! Second semester, the 1st bassoonist quit the orchestra to concentrate on academics (he ended up class valedictorian), which left me as 1st (and only) bassoonist. Our conductor introduced a song, the name of which I can't remember (this was 30 years ago), but I remember that Copland was the composer. The song had an absolutely amazing bassoon part. I used that bassoon part to earn a music scholarship at Washington State University. Where I got hooked up with a bassoon professor with a massive beard (I've noticed that beards are thing with male bassoonists. Curse my testosterone, I can't grow a beard worth !@#$). And that's where all the trouble started. My bassoon professor wanted to spend all of our time teaching me to carve a reed, instead of teaching me how to play the damned instrument. I only lasted a single semester at university. I'd spent my entire bassoon-playing "career" playing school-owned instruments, so once I was out of school, I had no bassoon to play. Even in 1984, a good bassoon still cost $3000. which I clearly didn't have laying around. I learned to play the bassoon at the same time that I was learning to play the guitar, and I think that's a large part of the reason I ended up becoming a bass guitarist. I've always loved the low end.

Such was the sound of the Bassoon at the beginning of the the Rite of Spring that it caused composer Camille Saint-Saëns to declare: "If that's a Bassoon, then I am a Baboon!"
The Bassoon is an amazing instrument with great range and emotion and I love it to bits.Its such a shame that composers rarely write for the Bassoon as much as they do for other instruments. If you want to see what the Bassoon is truly capable of listen to Vivaldi's Bassoon concerti.He wrote 40 of them with great variety. People need to write more music for the solo bassoon.
***** Horn is used actually a lot more than Bassoon. More composers write these beautiful lines for the horn, just because of how beautiful of an instrument it is. But a Bassoon is typically written with the Trombones, Tubas, or the Clarinets, and they usually have the base line, they do get some melody, but in all the pieces I've heard, Horn has had more melody than Bassoon..
Sax, Trombone, and Trumpets get a lot of the melody in songs, so... Lol. In my personal experience, Trumpet, Clarinet, and Flute get a majority of the melody.
When my band director brought her bassoon to school last year and some kid came in from weights to blow his nose and goes "is that a bass clarinet" WHILE I was putting my bass clarinet together

There is something sensual about the bassoon. I've always loved the double reed instruments; bassoon and oboe. I find them to be fascinating instruments of an orchestra.
I didn't expect the bassoon to have a somewhat violin-like sound in the top range. The air going through the reed at this range produced a sound which was a little bit the sound of the bow rubbing on the string. And the lower range is deep yet "soft" (I apologize for my lack of vocabulary), which is great for a beautiful low end without the abrasiveness of the brass section (which is wonderful too but in a different context).
The bassoon is amazing. Out of all three instruments I've played (Trombone, Bassoon, Flute) Bassoon is 100% my favorite, and this video was very informative and helpful! I definitely learned tons that I didn't even know! Also, Amy is an amazing Bassoonist, in all my years, I've never heard a Bassoon who sounds as perfect as her! But she is principal Bassoon, so it makes sense that she is great! :>

I'm on my 6th year of bassoon and I've loved every moment. More often then not I have similar parts to the tenor saxophone and then trombone/euphonium/baritone. It's very interesting to see a video all about bassoons because I'm the only one in my school district who plays. Even though I've played for so long I don't actually know much about the bassoon.

Marcos Torres Most orchestras don't have baritone or euphonium either, those are more band instruments. We actually have a saxophone player in our orchestra, but we're playing more modern pieces this year so he's more needed.

Geez. I never, NEVER, NEVER, never knew that bassoons could do high notes. But that's just because I have never, NEVER, NEVER, never heard a bassoon doing high notes before.
Very common misconception about bassoons, most concert band composers just stick the bassoon on the Bassline because they think that it Just plays low notes, but it’s a bit of a pain as the fingering is quite strenuous in the low register
@@nyancs7098 I knew they weren't as low as tubas. But it still surprised me nonetheless. Since up until then, I had only heard bassoon players that concentrated on the lower notes of the bassoon range. Never the higher notes.
C. Syde65 ye, the bassoon for me often roughly plays in the same pitch as tenor sax and euphonium in band, but in orchestra, the role is a lot different
@@nyancs7098 I don't know about that. I mean the tenor saxophone and the bassoon are still quite different as far as range goes. The trombone can go quite a bit lower than the tenor saxophone, although it can go as high. While the bassoon is very similar to a trombone in their range and pitch. Except the bassoon is slightly lower.

Syde65 depends on the arrangement really, trombones can go even lower than bassoons can, but if you look at some of the stuff on Hal Leonard, tenor saxes, bassoons and euphoniums often play quite similar parts, but the trombone part of a concert band Is a little different, and bassoon can go as high as trombones/tenor sax depending on the ability of the player, I can manage a g (one and a half octaves above middle c)
My school band director is planning to get a school bassoon and I get first dibs. I want to learn how to play it for about a year and try out for the orchestra. (I already play the tenor sax so I mainly just be learning the mouth placement for a double reed.) I also want to learn percussion I my last year of school band and decided which one I like more. I am really excited about it and really hope I have fun.
I went from marching Tenor Sax to playing Bassoon during concert season. I absolutely loved playing the bassoon. Being a bass singer in choir, I was more than happy following with the tubas and bass clarinets. Sadly, I never got the hang of playing above an Eb above the bass clef.

We have like no bassoon players in my school, so my band director had to call one of her old senior's to come play at the concert. ;-; I just started getting interested with the bassoon but lucky me I'm poor. I play alto sax which is way too common in my school so I want to be different. Saxophone is just not my instrument and I'm hoping to change it. Somewhere in the future at least.. *P.S. I have terrible trouble understanding music. I don't understand even the most frequently mentioned concepts like note, octive, tone or chord. I do, however, love music, and this was a fascinating chat and much of it was easy enough even for me to understand, thank you.

So I’m heading into 6th grade and today was instrument selection day so I picked bassoon because I loved it and I was really good at it for someone who hasn’t picked up and instrument
I’ve played the clarinet, bass clarinet, E flat contra clarinet, and the piano. At the moment the clarinet in my community band I’ve been wanting to expand my instrument horizon and was thinking the oboe, BUT my instructor said he would love to hear a bassoon sound in his band again. At that moment I instantly agreed to it, next week I’ll be trying out a bassoon and seeing how it will fit me and then I’ll be renting the instrument! Therefore I’ll be doing a lot of research on the instrument and and music sheet! I’m absolutely excited to try it out!
Prepare for the best and worst years of your life lol. Tips: Always have a few reeds, which are expensive, and if you buy 10 for 100 dollars, it's possible none of them will work. Also, prepare for your thumb constantly hurting
After learning saxophone and all the other woodwinds, I got a bassoon and learned it. It is so much fun to play! This was a nice video. I would like to see a demonstration of the differences between the German and French bassoons.

The bassoon is one of the most beautiful woodwind instruments. Bach and Vivaldi's concerto's are its best exhibitions.
Also Mozart wrote beautiful parts for the bassoon in his symphonies

Vivaldi's concerto is incredible. Worth playing up to grade 7 to get there..

I'm on my 6th year of bassoon and I've loved every moment. More often then not I have similar parts to the tenor saxophone and then trombone/euphonium/baritone. It's very interesting to see a video all about bassoons because I'm the only one in my school district who plays. Even though I've played for so long I don't actually know much about the bassoon.

I play sax and My school is too broke for a bassoon :( it’s my dream to learn how to play so I’m renting one from a music store. My music teacher won’t let me play it in the level 4-5 wind ensemble so Im gunna play it in a lower level group.

It also looks so 'cool' as an instrument and for me it is a 'must have' instrument for most of my classical pieces. Marcos Torres Most orchestras don't have baritone or euphonium either, those are more band instruments. We actually have a saxophone player in our orchestra, but we're playing more modern pieces this year so he's more needed.
These introductory videos on each instrument are so great for someone who is trying to learn a bit more about orchestras.
I find them richer when there is a sample of the instrument playing.

Came here from playing SWAM instruments. Its great to learn more about the instruments. I used in on a modern digital track and it sounded awesome.
Geez. I never, NEVER, NEVER, never knew that bassoons could do high notes. But that's just because I have never, NEVER, NEVER, never heard a bassoon doing high notes before.
Very common misconception about bassoons, most concert band composers just stick the bassoon on the Bassline because they think that it Just plays low notes, but it’s a bit of a pain as the fingering is quite strenuous in the low register
@@nyancs7098 I knew they weren't as low as tubas. But it still surprised me nonetheless. Since up until then, I had only heard bassoon players that concentrated on the lower notes of the bassoon range. Never the higher notes.
C. Syde65 ye, the bassoon for me often roughly plays in the same pitch as tenor sax and euphonium in band, but in orchestra, the role is a lot different
@@nyancs7098 I don't know about that. I mean the tenor saxophone and the bassoon are still quite different as far as range goes. The trombone can go quite a bit lower than the tenor saxophone, although it can go as high. While the bassoon is very similar to a trombone in their range and pitch. Except the bassoon is slightly lower.
C. Syde65 depends on the arrangement really, trombones can go even lower than bassoons can, but if you look at some of the stuff on Hal Leonard, tenor saxes, bassoons and euphoniums often play quite similar parts, but the trombone part of a concert band Is a little different, and bassoon can go as high as trombones/tenor sax depending on the ability of the player, I can manage a g (one and a half octaves above middle c)

My school band director is planning to get a school bassoon and I get first dibs. I want to learn how to play it for about a year and try out for the orchestra. (I already play the tenor sax so I mainly just be learning the mouth placement for a double reed.) I also want to learn percussion I my last year of school band and decided which one I like more. I am really excited about it and really hope I have fun.

I went from marching Tenor Sax to playing Bassoon during concert season. I absolutely loved playing the bassoon. Being a bass singer in choir, I was more than happy following with the tubas and bass clarinets. Sadly, I never got the hang of playing above an Eb above the bass clef.

So I’m heading into 6th grade and today was instrument selection day so I picked bassoon because I loved it and I was really good at it for someone who hasn’t picked up and instrument
i love this instrument because i play it and i am the only one that plays it my school
I’ve played the clarinet, bass clarinet, E flat contra clarinet, and the piano. At the moment the clarinet in my community band I’ve been wanting to expand my instrument horizon and was thinking the oboe, BUT my instructor said he would love to hear a bassoon sound in his band again. At that moment I instantly agreed to it, next week I’ll be trying out a bassoon and seeing how it will fit me and then I’ll be renting the instrument! Therefore I’ll be doing a lot of research on the instrument and and music sheet! I’m absolutely excited to try it out!

Prepare for the best and worst years of your life lol. Tips: Always have a few reeds, which are expensive, and if you buy 10 for 100 dollars, it's possible none of them will work. Also, prepare for your thumb constantly hurting
