I own the actual jumper that captain is wearing on the cover of the first album. He gave it to me when they got back together in late 78 and were playing the pound club as the doomed.
HaHa. I had to get my mum to repair all the holes he had cut in the front of it. He wrote me a letter in pencil saying he would bring it over on the tour but over the years the pencil faded away and it's virtually invisible now except for the side note by Johnny Moped which is in pen. So, kinda hard to prove it's the real deal now.
All three of those top three were good, but no one touched the damned for the absolute no limits. Sod convention. Wild, weird, amazing. Till the day I die they will be number one in my book
Im a lifelong damned fan, and i think music for pleasure is a great album,, i play it regularly in my work van along with the other albums, brilliant i have to say,, i know the captain isn't too fond of it because its not produced the way he wanted it to be, but i think its a classic
In Punky Reggae Party, released in 1977, Bob Marley mentions The Damned, The Jam, The Clash and Dr Feel good. That gives a fairly good impression of what was though at the time. One could easily include The Stranglers, I saw them and the others in 1970s. Apart from Dr Feelgood, unfortunately I never got to see them. I'm 61 this year and occasionally see people I'm still friends with from that time. If I think of them I don't see them as they are now, but how they were when 17.
As a professional lead guitarist and drummer into several genres from metal to jazz I found your opinions right on point and your views well educated and refreshing. The damn had more chops and sensibilities than their peers. They weren't just ignorant punks like the Germs or Circle jerks they had another gear they could shift into.
Love The Damned, so your comment is cringingly embarrassing. Most small children are taught that there is no such concept as the best because every person's perspective is different! If you are going to leave comments, try to leave ones that don't make people think you are a retard!!!
The Damned were to the punk movement what Bad Manners and Madness were to the 2 Tone/Ska movement. The fun side not in it for awards but still an integral part of the whole scene and having longevity and success beyond their initial roots.
I like your dialogue. I was handed the album and ordered to record it onto cassette for a party in 1977, my dad had a good hifi. Those VU meters worked hard. I had never heard anything like it. It was constant. The party was a milestone in our lives, pogoing, strobe lights, spitting beer, string vests bin liners, lots of booze, and a problem teddy boy.
You forgot one thing. They wrote the best pre acid trip wait song ever. We all had home tapes of this song repeated throughout. Let's wait for the blackout. Absolute gold.
Great Job! My favorite band. like you, seen em more times than I can remember. And I'll see them every time they're around. I've got a soft spot for the 2nd album, as it was my 1st one of theirs, when it had just come out and I was just a kid :)
The Clash sold themselves out , the Sex Pistols came and went, Only the Damed have stood the test of time even though they changed their line up a few times , probably one the best punk band from the UK
1:59 And I salute. Also, this (the series) might be the best Damned retrospective on TH-cam. I'm planting my flag there. You nailed the philosophy perfectly.
Interesting overview! At the time, the rivalry and outright animosity between the bands was mainly encouraged by the managers, McClaren (Pistols), Jake Riviera (Damned) and Bernie Rhodes (Clash), all squabbling for Supremacy among each other and using the bands as a means to an end. Not good. It's arguably why the whole 'movement', if you could call it that and keep a straight face, fell apart so quickly. I'm reminded of the Howard Devoto quote upon leaving Buzzcocks; "What was once frighteningly new had become a clean old hat..." Ok, Howard. Point taken. I think. But all that aside, the Damned were always my band of choice; they did what it said on the tin! No pretence, no political posturing (although politics Were there, in a very veiled and personal way) and no real slavish following of what came to be seen as 'Punk Fashion'. None of the early bands looked like each other. The Pistols didn't look like the Clash, the Clash didn't look like the Stranglers, the Stranglers didn't look like Buzzcocks, Buzzcocks didn't look like the Jam... The Damned didn't look like each other! That's why they'll always be THE Punk band to me. And if anybody doesn't agree, fuck 'em...😡😂✊👍👍👍
Thanks for your work in an enjoyable review. I've played the drums since 1978 and I can still learn from Scabies drumming on the first and second albums. You mentioned Filthy Animal Taylor as an equal but Scabies is on a higher level. An outstanding drummer.
Addendum: Sensible didn't really come into his own until he started playing guitar. Listen to the solo on the Strawberries track 'Under the Floor', it sounds like Dave Gilmour being buggered in a doorless toilet cubicle by an amphetamine crazed lunatic. Just saying...😏👍
Excellent video. A Labour of love and all the better for it. 'Damned Damned Damned" is simply perfecr. Me too, I was expecting "Music for pleasure" to be shite, and it just isn't. At all. Not a classic as the first record maybe, but most bands would sell their mothers to make a record like that. Respect to your work in any case, I thoroughly enjoyed it....
In terms of commercial success though, The Stranglers outdid the Clash and The Damned in the UK anyway, during 1977, in the UK, though they never had big success in the US and long term, The Clash outdid them internationally. They were often cold shouldered by some pink purists and you could debate whether they were really "punk". (Though the Damned to some extent were also considered punk pariahs to some extent and not considered "cool" by some, just like The Stranglers. I think the two bands had a certain affinity with each other and got on fairly well, partially because they were shunned by the self appointed arbiters of cool!) I'm a fan of all the bands I've mentioned by the way!
Great overview , I was 14 when it all kicked off with DDD and have followed them faithfully ever since. I’m a Music for Pleasure lover and can’t understand the distain for it
First punk single in the UK was the Damned. But if you go to France or Belgium that a different matter. Damned Flame/Blast from Belgium is proto punk metal from 1972 and Strike Up Strike Up from France from Nov' 76 but started in '74, stuff is mental. Way ahead of the game. British always thought they were first. No way! No one wants to believe or even write the history books again. These two tracks are integral to any collection and or documentary.

Idiot box is one of my favourite Damned songs. It's about the band Television and the traitorous shit that they put the band through on that American tour. Thank goodness for The Dickies ❤. Like deployed 👍 2nd comment saying the same thing 😊, 2 full views though, it's fun being addled 😂
Any time you're feeling sh1t put New Rose on as loud as you can and if that doesn't work do the same with Neat Neat Neat. If that doesn't cheer you up then you're already dead.
@@jeanlongsden1696Not really, the real band got together in 77. Long after the others had been well established. I mean, The Damned had New Rose out before McKay & Morris got together with Siouxsie & Severin.

This is good work, like all good criticism sent me back to the source material to listen again. Why'd you stop after two? I think Music for Pleasure fails because they seem to want to be rock, not punk rock - too much musicianship for its own sake, too many solo's, virtuosity covering for lack of imagination. It's boring. I think the cover art's fantastic, though.
Yep, they were the main three bands of that time. I’d say the only other band that comes close to being part of that original scene is Buzzcocks, just because they played their first show at the Pistols’ second Manchester show in 76. I love all their stuff up to the Friday The 13th ep, although I only got into that recently. Before that I stopped at The Black Album/There Ain’t No Sanity Claus ep.
I own the actual jumper that captain is wearing on the cover of the first album. He gave it to me when they got back together in late 78 and were playing the pound club as the doomed.

The Stranglers and the Damned were open at each others throats . The Strangers were a fantastic band in there time 👍
I got to see Lords of the New Church live in New Orleans and even met the band in a record store. Stiv was very warm and friendly.
Rat's drums are a huge part of the sound on this album , he's absolutely nuts on the drums

What on earth is arrogant about the Circle Jerks ?
those bands you mentioned were not ignorant in any way.
LOL Germs and Circle Jerks ignorant punks??? Only GI and Group Sex are two of the 25 greatest punk albums of all time.

Talk about volatile, iIve been to their last ever show ...twice

The most fun gigs I`ve ever been to in London 1978-1985 was this lot, they were amazing

Excellent work sir !!!
The Damned should be recognized 💪💥🎸
"One Way Love," and "Your Eyes," are awesome tracks from the "Music For Pleasure" album.
I didn’t want to pay to see the official documentary. So thanks for this.
Lar's Ulrich named the Damned as one of the band's that Metallica loved. He was sitting with Hetfield & Burton, being interviewed.
they are the kings... hand down.
I like your critique which is SPOT ON.
You can definitely pull some tracks from MFP for the ultimate Damned compilation
saw a video of capt playing guitar naked on a floor 4 about 8 minutes 1 of the best guitar ?? solos?? imo i wish i could find it
They also had the best name, love them to death, seen them twice in S.F. CA.
The Clash sold themselves out , the Sex Pistols came and went, Only the Damed have stood the test of time even though they changed their line up a few times , probably one the best punk band from the UK
Indeed.
And their new album, Darkadelic proves it.
It kicks ass!

I still have music for pleasure and still play it.
I love it too
Captain did some really cool things on the first 2 albums if you closely listen to the bass
There’s an LP by The Doomed, which is The Damned with Lemmy.
"Alone" is a killer track on music for pleasure!
Nice overview, I’ll even forgive the pronunciation of “Bollocks” as “Bullocks” 🤭
A great punk rock primer. Well done.
From one who was there, you describe it well.

The best Stooges cover ever, No Fun by Sex Pistols.
In 1977 the Stranglers were the most popular after the Pistols. Basically it was the big four.
Damned are the shit you can't fuck with.
Spot on mate I'm subbed 🍀🇬🇧👍
Good stuff.
Let's be clear. The big 4 were: The Stranglers, The Damned, The Clash, and Sex Pistols.
Crass not Clash
You forgot Buzzcocks. So initially it was a big 5.
Their first lp is legend. Then they did unbelievable commercial stuff. Listen to an album like Anything......wtf is that?
What about MGE, Strawberries, Friday 13th EP
Anything has some good tunes.
Hi pls go on to 1979 and beyond, pls.
You got it bud, working on that video right now. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I agree, Music for Pleasure wouldn't be bad if they left off Idiot Box and Your Eyes. The guitar riff on Idiot Box is just so uninspired.
Crass crass crass
Rift Riff Rafter?
Stiff Little Fingers were not part of the first wave punk bands. The Jam should have been listed here!!
Problem Child, Politics, and Stretcher case are the only ones I don't hit "skip" on when listening to Music for Pleasure. The rest are crap.

Why do Americans do that big three big four shit , what about the clash
The Clash were posers. I mean London's Calling, pathetic, a mishmash of every form of music with rubbish lyrics... that was not Punk Rock.

The Heartbreakers were.
The Clash were bottom of the bill.
UK-wise, it's hard not to have the Clash in the top 3. They also didn't implode as suddenly and as meekly as the Heartbreakers.
