- What is Morphology? Morpheme and its types
What is Morphology :
It is the study of structure of the words and word formation.
Morpheme:
A morpheme is the smallest meaningful unit in a language.A morpheme is not identical to a word. A morpheme sometimes does not stand alone, but a word always stands alone.
Types Of Morphemes:
1.Free Morphemes
2.Bound Morphemes
1.Free Morphemes
The type of morphemes that can stand alone as words by themselves.
Free morphemes has two types
1.Lexical Morphemes
2. Functional Morphemes
A.Lexical Morphemes
Referred also as
OPEN CLASS
because we can add morphemes to these words.
Examples: Nouns, Verbs and Adjectives.Home, cup, beauty
B.Functional Morphemes :
Referred also as
CLOSED CLASS
Words that have grammatical functions
Examples: conjunctions,
prepositions, articles,
auxiliaries and pronouns.
A, an, the, of, to, from
2.Bound Morphemes :
These are AFFIXES that must
be attached to the word.Bound Morphemes has two types.
Examples : s, er , esy, ier, ed
1.Derivational Morphemes
2.Inflectional Morphemes
A. Derivational Morphemes :
It changes the category of the word when it is added to the free morpheme but there are some exceptions.
There are two categories of derivational morphemes:
1.Class Changing
2.Class Maintaining
B. Inflectional Morphemes :
Morphemes that are used to indicate the aspects of the grammatical function of a word.
Difference between Morphemes and Morph:
Morphemes :
The smallest unit of a word that has meaning. It is the abstract unit of a word.
Morph:
The phonetic realization of a morpheme. It is the physical manifestation of the morphemes.
Difference between Suntax and Morphology :
Morphology :
How words are formed
. What is the internal structure of the word.
Suntax:
It studies how words are combined into phrases and sentences.

Hello:) hope this gets answered in time. I am studying for an upcoming exam. According to the solutions of a worksheet, the morpheme {except} in the word is a free, functional. I cannot fathom why tho, because isn’t {except} a verb? Therefore shouldn’t it be free, lexical? I know it might be used as a preposition but in this case isn’t it kind of verblike?
Excellent sir!
Lots of love for you, sir. It's quite clear after, i listen to your lecture.
