I think his musical tastes have changed so much because he is such a progressive and self indulgent musician that I bet it may have been better then he says........For example the riff of chimera on oceania was a kick ass riff that sounded like a nod the his 90s style, the only reason why he put the song on the album is because of mike the drummer who was in his 20s said he loved that riff. And Billy didn't really think much of the riff, which I was super surprised of hearing. I guess thats what happens when you are such an intense and prolific song writer like him.
NosferatuNite , in 2000 after Machina II it looked as though Billy would get more avant-guard/cyber-metal/whatever, but instead he evolved a more Bob Dylan/Niel Diamond kind of approach, so we just have to accept it and enjoy it, if we can.
