    The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, lifeboat crews around the UK and Ireland are ready to launch to help those in need. Whether you're stuck on a sinking ship, cut off by a rapidly rising tide, or in the water and close to drowning, RNLI crew members will drop everything to come to your rescue. 95% of RNLI lifeboat crews and station staff are volunteers.
    But it’s not just lifeboats. RNLI lifeguards patrol 248 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands, keeping people safe, providing safety advice and rescuing those in trouble. Education volunteers visit schools and swimming clubs to help teach the next generation how to enjoy the water safely. And volunteer fundraisers and shop workers give up their time to generate vital funds. The RNLI is also working to help communities around the world that are most at risk of drowning.
    If you spot someone in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

    I can agree with your comment that the Coastguard and RNLI are a really excellent. I got into difficulties near Dover this summer and contacted the coast guard. Within twenty minutes a wind farm support vessel had been diverted to keep an eye on me before the Margate Lifeboat came. This was all at 12 'o' clock at night one Saturday. I took round the next day the best bottle of whiskey I could buy. A great service from a very motivated group of people.

    Fully agree with the splendid action & services of Dover Coast Guard.
    In 1992 we blew up the engine before Hastings. No wind. We hoisted sails and returned to Dover, informing DCG about or problems. They called up every hour till we reached Dover where the pilot boat awaited us and brought us to the Wellington dock.
    Splendid guys!!!!!

    Its the 10th anniversary of my channel crossing in our newly purchased 1903 Dutch Tjalk Barge, Herman Wyns/Tessie.
    We were very lucky considering the conditions thanks to the efforts of the Coastguard & RNLI.
    Over the years there has been a lot of misinformation about the crossing and this is my own account of what happended on 26th Oct 2010:
    Purchased in Ghent in July it wasnt until late October the barge sale was finally completed and was available to be piloted up past Bruges and onto Newport in Belgium to wait for a break in the weather to make our crossing. Initially it proved straightforward until after passing Calais and we crossed the first of the two main shipping lanes. The swell turned from 1.5m waves into choppy mixed 5-6m waves & the winds got up to force 8 or 9.
    Pushing against the 5 knot current at 4 to 6 knots it was slow progress, and with my lift and transport setup to go on from Dover, we kept on heading on the same bearing. At times I felt we were effectively going backwards and losing the battle especially as the prop was mostly out of the water due to the waves.
    Upon checking what fuel/time we had left, we also checked the large engine room only to find that it's 3 cylinder 2-stroke ex American tank engine had come detached from its coolant pipe, and this pipe was continuing to pump in fresh seawater into its own engine room. The engine room was already 1/3rd full and in order to attempt a fix the engine was shut off and our unrestrained drift towards Bideford Sands was duly noted by the volunteer coastguard, who raised the alarm.
    The Dover life boat crew were soon heading towards us & it was a relief to hear their cheery voices asking if we 'fancied a tow'..'its going to be bouncy'..
    4hrs later we arrived back in Dover harbour. The Crew were amazing and took turns to film their rescue, I went up to their offices afterwards as they all wanted copies made of the resulting video to keep. A short clip of which can be seen on youtube :
    th-cam.com/video/-kg_QweiLy0/w-d-xo.html
    The 20m barge was now flooded with 1 foot of seawater & I spent the next few days pumping it all out in readiness for its onward journey across the country.
    Its strong design & construction (I later learnt that it was a sailing estuary delivery Tjalk, so had been built with double the usual number of spars & when converted had been balasted with poured concrete.)
    The following week it was lifted out & taken by truck to Portishead, along the way the trailer had 4 punctures and blocked the M4 services for many hours, we then took it under the Severn bridges to the Sharpness entrance to the Gloucester and Sharpness canal.. But thats all another story..
    Tessie is today still moored on the Sharpness canal close to the Purton Hulks.

      If that’s a three inch nylon warp it will have a breaking strain of around 80 tons and a SWL of about 6 tons. The Cox’n of the lifeboat will be keeping his load well under that (assuming his boat has anywhere near that amount of tug). Between the SWL and the breaking load the warp will stretch by 40%. In this case the tow is very close to 60 metres so that’s over 20 metres of stretch available. In practice, I doubt they use more than 1 or possibly 2 metres of stretch. A three inch nylon rope could lift that entire lifeboat.

      Yes and no, flat bottom barge powered for canal and near coastal waters, huge surface area on the bow, low freeboard and bilges not designed for green water over the deck is a recipe for disaster. Sure the hull can do it - if kitted out properly. The simple equation in the case of these hulls is they have to be able to disperse and pump more water than a high sea state will bring. Most will not, they're simply not designed to.

    • @kevins2684
      @kevins2684 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve just come across this and I’m thinking about barge like this for coast hopping and inland waterways. Looking at how the barge performs under tow, if it had say, a 500 hp engine, could it ‘punch’ its way through the heavy sea?

    • @stevebarlow3154
      @stevebarlow3154 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevins2684 I'm a yachtie, so I don't know a great deal about barges, but I assume it is a displacement vessel. The speed of a displacement vessel is constrained by the hull length ie the longer the length the faster it can go. But there will be a maximum hull speed for that length, no matter how powerful the engine, it won't be able to go any faster.

    • @kevins2684
      @kevins2684 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Barlow I understand that, but I was talking more about the power than the speed. In my scenario the barge doesn’t have to go much faster, just be able to maintain speed going into heavy seas. I’m probably not understanding it properly.

    • @stevebarlow3154
      @stevebarlow3154 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevins2684 Up to a certain point the more powerful the engine the closer you are going to get to the maximum theoretical hull speed and to being able to maintain that speed. But a barge isn't designed for choppy waters. With its flat bottom it is going to roll like a pig and be in danger of capsizing. And as mentioned above, a barge would have trouble dealing with the amount of water coming aboard. You would be in serious danger of being swamped.
      If you take something like a traditional fishing boat, they are displacement vessels. They may travel slowly, but can carry on fishing in all but the most extreme weather. The reason being that they are designed with keels and with all the heavy equipment, such as engines and generators, as close to the keel as possible. They also have a high freeboard and the ability to get rid of any water coming aboard quickly.

    Why the canal narrow boat navigate at open sea? Do UK Maritime Coast Guard Agency have any regulations to limit narrow boat leave the canal and steaming at sea in such weather condition?

    What the hell this barge was doing in such heavy seas ???…
    It is not designed for this type of sea : it can do coastal sailing, but in calmer weather…
    I fail to see how she got caught : was not this avoidable ?…

    • @Joe90V
      @Joe90V 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Completely avoidable, but the RNLI will rescue the stupid as well as the unfortunate. They don't judge, they just save lives.

    • @keytesofessex
      @keytesofessex 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joe90v I know the guy on the barge, he waited 10 days in Calais, for the weather to be suitable and the French coast guard gave him the green light to go.
      Their forecast was wrong and even the RNLI said it wasn’t his fault.

      @@keytesofessex you don't go to sea on either one single weather forecast or a "green light". Bad luck if the meteofrance forecast was poor, bad seamanship to not have checked synoptic charts, other forecasts etc. Especially in a boat that cannot run from the weather.

      because it was filmed in 2010, and also because the camera has to be running for so long, it used up far too much memory space.

Came across as lacking appreciation & respect, least they could do is fund raise for RNLI to cover what their stupidity cost the charity.
