Hey folks! Let me know in the comments if you’ve taken time out for yourself to try a mindful photo walk - even if it’s just for a 10 minute mindful stroll 🚶‍♂️

I already do this, in a way. But no lists, no schedule, just when I want. I'm not accomplishing much in my life but photographing gives me a sense of accomplishment.

That’s great - photography does give a lot back I find.

Apparently, I've been doing this for a long time and didn't even realize it!! I would like to add a second part to this: For me, spending time photographing like you are suggesting is an absolutely wonderful experience, and I HIGHLY recommend doing this! I get absolutely lost in walking around and looking at the details of everything around me, looking at bark on a tree, or maybe cracks in the sidewalk, or rust on a car bumper. But the second part, for me, is in the editing process. I love to put my headphones on to close out any distractions, turn on whatever music suits my mood at the time, and dig deep into editing. Sometimes I listen to deep dark heavy metal, or it maybe tai-chi type of music, or classic rock, maybe electronic, maybe classical music....whatever I am feeling at the time. I then scan through my images and grab one that catches my attention and do a deep dive into editing. Sometimes I create something amazing, and sometimes I just can't get anything out of an image, at which point, I just move on to the next. I truly believe that photography has a lot of healing properties.....thanks for posting this video!

Thanks for recommending this video. I found it very interesting. I work as a Graphic Designer by day and a hobby photographer off the clock. I like to escape the office whenever I can even if it is only to the gym on a lunchtime or out for a walk with the camera if I'm working from home (in lockdown). You are correct it is essential to devote some personal time to your day.

Photowalks, especially in the woods, along trails and rivers are the best ”shutter therapy” (as Robin Wong calls it). Just one camera, and 1 or 2 lenses. Make the walk as unplanned as possible… just go and enjoy! 😎

This was a much-needed reminder to take a moment to appreciate the environment around us. Not only is this a useful exercise to help with easing stress and anxiety - and a reminder that walking for me should not always be about burning calories(!) but I see parallels with the practice of 'walking ethnographies'. From an academic perspective, your video is an excellent practical application of the walking ethnographic method - how to 'see' and make the 'familiar strange'. It also provides us with ways in which we can take steps to protect our mental health and connect with the natural environment around us. I will be recommending this to friends, colleagues, and my students. Great to see Hilly Fields take a starring role here too! Thanks Phil!

Took a mindful photo walk this morning. I had a moment with the smallest fox cub I have ever seen. We stayed with each other’s gaze for 30secs. My attempt to get the phone out to snap a pick broke the spell. Great video Phil. That voice was made for radio and tv!

Hey Jane, loved reading that - thank you for sharing! And actually we don't even really need a camera to get the most from this, as long as we see what you're supposed to and let it percolate and inform us. That's the essence for me.

Such a great video! I'd love to see a video centered around smartphone cameras and how to take advantage of them.
I've always been the type of person to go from from point A to point B, and I think photography might help me discover my wandering side. This video has inspired to go out without much in mind, aside from being aware of my surroundings and experiencing the moment.
    Thanks!

    • @LuminousLives
      @LuminousLives  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That’s great - thank you for your thoughts. You don’t need to think too much about the camera you use, maybe in just slowing down, going half the speed from your point A to point B, consciously slowing down your breathing will open up your awareness to lots more in-between, stuff that you’d otherwise not have seen.

I would add that this routine can be also used for creating art with substance, however you are right to point out that at the moment of shooting we should not think about it. Great video👍
Most of these issues arise due to many Caucasians in many countries who insist in chasing after the dream of “working from home”….behind a screen. Thats where the issues start.
Lack of human interaction, unlike working inside an office where you converse much more with others and experience busy interactions the entire day.
At home, its totally the opposite unless you are in a senior mgmt position handling lots of phone calls, video conferences, and really loaded with office work at home until at night. Thats REAL work done from home.
In reality, many marooned at home doing bit and pieces of ad hoc work are actually unemployed. Unemployment and/or retirement in seclusion cause severe depression and high levels of anxiety due to a sense of fear…fear of the future.
Even well-paid employees in high powered corporate offices forced to work from home are under high anxiety (esp in Asia) because they end up working for even longer hours…up until 9pm, when their colleagues and superiors are calling them. The sudden lack of face-to-face interaction for long periods can also cause the superiors to feel a sense of “lost of control” because they are no longer in the office and they cannot fully trust their employees working from home.
The way out for unemployed ones stuck at home in isolation is to “embrace the situation” and accept their current lives. Or to see part-time jobs where they are kept busy for many hours doing REAL work in a REAL place of business.
Once a person is very busy doing real work, with a bit of consistent income coming in (building confidence and reassurance), he/she simply wont have time for depression and anxiety. The mind is pre-occupied with productive matters. This is the situation in Asia.
