    "Leave him! That's my brother! He's trained better than to be killed by that!"
    Compare that to earlier when Olivier arrived at Central and said "I don't consider him my brother, not since he abandoned his post in Ishval."
    Alex has clearly redeemed himself in her eyes after saving her several times and fighting this hard. His character arc has been so minor and understated but I love it all the same.

    • @Heegaherger
      @Heegaherger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      It was Alex’s refusal to run from a fight when they were given the chance that redeemed himself in his sister eyes. “I swear on my life it will never happen again!”
      Armstrongs. Don’t. Back. Down.

    • @sunnydraws2513
      @sunnydraws2513 2 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Some people hate Olivier for scolding Alex for abandoning his post because they see it as her saying something like "Refusing genocide? Couldn't be me." But it was way more than that. Alex *did* run. Instead of trying to do something to stop the senseless killing and genocide, he ran away. He ran away and did nothing about it.
      This is why I like their relationship, because Alex really did grow a lot and prove that he's changed from the person Olivier used to know.

    • @cas2762
      @cas2762 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      This fight is literally him doing the exact opposite of what he did in Ishval.
      In Ishval, Alex saw wrongdoings committed against the people of his country, things that clashed with his beliefs and moral code ordered to him by his superiors, and instead of objecting and fighting against it (he did try to smuggle people out once, but Kimblee caught him and killed them all) he lowered his head and ran away, allowing the atrocities with his compliance.
      Here, Alex heard his superiors are planning to hurt his countryman, and have actually been doing it for years. Instead of fleeing or keeping quiet, he dedicated his strength to fighting against that, even if it would turn him into a criminal against his country. Even if it would cost his life. He would fight against injustice and for the good of his people.
      We saw in briggs that Olivier cares more about her people than she does about the government. She turned on the government as soon as she was presented with evidence of what they’d been doing to people. I think even before they understood the transmutation circle. So now that she sees Alex do the same, turn his back on the government for his countrymen and not backing out of the fight, she has actual respect for him.
      In a world where Alex fought against the government’s actions in Ishval, Olivier is definitely proud to see him as her brother, despite the fact that he is scorned and hated by everyone else as a traitor.

    To fully understand why everyone wouldn't let Roy be the one to kill Envy, we need to look back at when Roy killed Lust. I'm sure he did enjoy it and felt satisfied while killing her, but this way primarily for the good of others, not his personal revenge. He was calm, collected, and was completely in control of his own emotions. He was anything but those things in this episode. He was enraged, blinded by his own emotions and wanted to kill Envy *primarily* so that he could get revenge. He made a promise after the war to only use his alchemy and abilities for the good of others, and once you break a promise once, it's very difficult to not break it again.

    30:25 It helps if you think of Lust in terms of more than just carnal desire. She was the all encompassing version, including lust for control, and bloodlust. Remember how ready she was to resort to lethal force against Mustang and Alphonse, despite knowing how vital they were to Father's plan? She wasn't explored hugely due to her early exit, but she was more than just a hot bod.

    • @AStrangeWindmill

      My read, it's also due to lust as "consumption" or "use" rather than "love" of something. Lust uses people, and discards them when they can be of no further use. That's why she's so bloodthirsty - she's not eager to kill, she's efficient. "I don't need you alive, so why do you still need to be here?". As opposed to Al, who is willing to protect people even after they've been shown to be a burden.
      That's why the only time we saw her _really_ angry in 19 was during Al's speech to Hawkeye. She hates the idea that someone could have no intention of using someone and still care about them. But in her heart, she respects it - which is why she was so impressed by mustang when she died. He literally dragged himself back from the grave to kill her out of love for Hawkeye and Havoc.

    I think the saddest thing about Envy and the homunculi is how much they can't understand the whole breadth of humanity. They're just one part of a person, and they can only understand that part. Wrath was angry at Elesia crying because he can't understand grief. Envy can't understand cooperation because emvy by its very nature means you're alone. Greed, even attached to Ling, only understands emotions through a filter of wants and selfishness. And it's such an incomprehensible thought to the homunculi that one would prefer death to living in a world that doesn't make sense

      The feeling bad for Envy is a complicated thing. Because while he does 'deserve' everything that comes his way. A quick death would have been fine, but we were basically seeing Envy being -tortured- before brutal execution. Does any sort of human actually -deserve- that kind of treatment, even if they did wrong? I don't think it's in our place as humans to really put out that kind of punishment because at that point we're trying to rationalize a horrible deed. But that's just how I feel about it

      31:14 To add to your conversation topic, Mustang's entire character arc revolves around becoming the Führer in order to redeem himself for the massacre in Ishval.
      By following through on his revenge, he'd essentially be justifying the desire for revenge that all Ishvalans have against Amestris-more importantly, Scar's murdering of state alchemists. After all, Mustang murdered THOUSANDS of Ishvalans, yet he himself feels wronged after losing only ONE friend. Killing Envy in front of Scar would basically be a slap in the face of all the Ishvalans Mustang killed, saying that only he (Mustang) gets a free pass for vengeance simply because it's convenient for him.
      This is the "chain of hatred" that Scar has learned to break, and that's why Scar's internal monologue is focused on very prominently. Being from Ishval, Scar represented the hatred and grudges of all the people that Mustang killed in the past. Now imagine if this person-someone YOU YOURSELF very deeply wronged, and whose plight is 10x GREATER THAN YOURS-calmly takes the higher moral ground to talk you down from your heated emotions. Scar's snide remark is his way of reminding Mustang that in the grand scheme of things, Mustang’s quest for vengeance is not as important as his promise to restore Ishval-that it is Mustang’s turn to show that he is capable of breaking the "cycle of vengeance".
      Scar stopped going down the path of vengeance because he believed that he could "change Amestris". In this instance, he wants to see ACTUAL PROOF that Amestrians are willing to change, and what better way for him to get some evidence than to see how the "future führer" of the county handles his vengeance problem.

      Looking back there is a parallel between Lust and Envy's death that we could point out. Lust sin is not related to sexual desire. Many people think of her sin as bloodlust(it is shown many times in the anime how she kills without any regrets). Mustang was full of hatred when he was trying to kill Envy. Instead, he was trying to protect his people when he killed Lust, showing the difference between himself(not driven by bloodlust)and the homunculus.

    On lust being inaccurate: yes, in English it means sexual desire. But the Greek word used in the New Testament translates more closely to "covetousness"--the desire to possess, own, control. So in that sense Lust works as someone who manipulates and controls people, treats them as things rather than people--which also adds a layer to Mr Chess Metaphor Mustang being the one to kill her.

    It's true that Lust herself wasn't really lascivious in the series, it was mostly others who lusted after her which was a more external portrayal of her sin. However, I always assumed that the way how she expressed her own sin during her screentime was through her bloodlust, not any actual sexual lust. Back when she was still alive, Lust was very much a sadistic character who enjoyed watching humans make fools of themselves, and equally enjoyed partaking in causing the conundrum as well. She also took pleasure in watching humans kill each other off, validating her own perceptions of them as being barbaric, predictable, and idiotic. But she, of course, fancied the act of killing humans herself too.
    Another interpretation of how she might've evoked her sin in the series was how she lusted after the successful completion of her group's plans. After all, lust itself is defined as a strong and visceral desire for something. And seeing how she practically came from Father, it makes sense that Lust would harbor the desire to see her creator succeed in obtaining what he himself desired most.
    It's pretty unclear exactly how fitting Lust's death is when tying back to her sin. Most would cheekily propose the notion that it's the fact that Lust was killed by a womanizer, for which Mustang was known for being. Others would claim that she as the embodiment of her sin was defeated by it's antithesis, that being geniune love, which was expressed between Roy, Riza, and Al (it isn't just romantic, guys 😅). And of course there's the ironic hypothetics that Lust was made to actually care about somebody else, but obviously not in a romantic way. In this case, it was Lust giving her full attention to Mustang as a man to take seriously, as well as being the only man she ever gave the courtesy of geniunely complimenting (besides maybe Hughes of course). Lust's compliment even had hints of her subtly lusting after Mustang, which very much is a backwards interpretation of how her sin was usually and blatantly portrayed in the series.

    Kinda surprised you guys didnt think of this. One of the reasons they didnt let Mustang kill Envy has to be, that Bradley is WRATH and also the "king" of the country. Mustang would, in a sense, just become another Wrath, if he would have killed Envy in his blind rage state, no? Now, that he has perspective from everyone, he can be the one thing Wrath never could, because it is was he is. Mustang can hold back, reconsider and show Mercy. If you remind yourself, Wrath has NEVER shown mercy to any enemy he fought with or otherwise.

    Ed gave a great speech in this episode about envy and jealousy. At one point or another he kind of analyzes all the sins, except lust. You guys mentioned that Lust seems to have less depth then the others. That seems to be intentionally omitted. She is explored much less and gone way sooner then any of the other sins/homoculus which is odd since several of the others effectively come back from death and are even remade by Father. Getting a bit meta and examining the author's intentions - it seems obvious she was removed from the story quickly specifically to avoid the racy storylines that would come from such a character.

    I'm just going to say it: Envy being envious of humans has been obvious since the beginning because they have been talking constantly about the fact that humans are simplistic and lowly creatures consistently and, more importantly, VERY LOUDLY. Even in this episode when Envy tries to assert themselves in front of Mustang (saying how dare a lowly human look down on them) it's very clear that it's a desperate shtick that Envy taught themselves. That's usually a sign of people who want to convince themselves of how they DON'T need something to cover up the fact that they very clearly want what the other people they are sh*ttalking actually have. Not to mention that Envy throughout the show felt most comfortable taking on the form of what they consider to be beautiful (a HUMAN person), which connects to the fact that they hate their true form (be it the big lizard or the tiny lizard) and they prefer to not assume that form in front of others unless they have to because they in fact secretly want to be human. However, since they were created to be envious by Father and since as a homunculus they can never be human, there is no way to solve their existential crisis, which leads to their despair and they then decide to take their self-hatred out on the people they can never truly be. They can only ever try to play up the fact that they do not need to be envious of creatures that are so 'obviously' inferior to them. Envy was lying to themselves this entire time so that they didn't have to think about and confront the fact that they can never be what they obviously wanted to be. Doesn't excuse anything Envy did but it makes the situation a bit sadder when they kill themselves because they are clearly meant to be a counterpart to Edward Elric in a lot of ways and throughout the show they would tease Edward like an older sibling might so they at least feel that they have a clear connection to Edward. That's why they address Edward by his real name as they die.

    This episode is the best display of vengeance in any media that I've seen.
    Mostly in media (in action movies and such), when the hero takes revenge it's usually presented as cool and satisfying thing.
    Here, this show doesn't glorifying the vengeance. despite us being on Mustang's side and heating Envy, we can't help but feel that something wrong when we see mustang toy with Envy and torture him. Just like Riza, We feel bad, and we want Mustang to stop behaving so cruel. That is because in real life, revenge is not a positive thing. It's scary and wrong, and it's making people do bad things for this cause.
    Such a smart presentation.

    So far, all the Homunculus have died in ironic ways.
    Lust died on her knees to a man (she may have been attracted to) despite her whole 'thing' is being able to bring men to her knees as a dominating force of lust (if that made sense).
    Envy died after realising what he was truly envious of, humans and their relationships and connections. Always looking down on humans and calling them weak, just to rip his own philosphers stone out causing his own death. Full of self pitty dies. Also managaes to just release the one thing he has that humans don't, a philosopher's stone and immortality (though the stone doesn't last).
    Gluttony, so far the most ironic of them all, he died to someone being gluttonous for his powers.
    Greed technically survives so not including him.

    It's not just because he was doing it for revenge. They stopped him because he was starting to take sadistic pleasure in what he was doing which I think was the biggest red flag for them. And sure, you can argue the envy needed to die, but what's to stop him from going up far again when someone killed Hawkeye? Perhaps for the argument say this person was human and not some immortal monster, how can you guarantee that mustang won't just go that far again?Anytime someone takes pleasure in killing another creature is generally when you've crossed a line.

    People always talk about the symbolism of Mustang giving into his wrath to kill Envy but people VERY often ignore what would PHYSICALLY occur if Mustang killed Envy when he wanted to. We saw how enormous his full power giant blasts are. But here’s the sad truth of Alchemists. They have no built in resistance to what they do. They aren’t immune to bullets or big attacks. They are glass cannons. BIG ones but glass nonetheless. And that’s where his final snap comes in. Envy wouldn’t have just mentally and emotionally broken Mustang with that move. But Mustang would’ve inadvertently burned himself at the stake. Burning himself alive RIGHT along with Envy. And I have no doubt that’s another reason Hawkeye stopped him. She was watching him destroy himself and he was about to do so COMPLETELY.
    We also talk about how unhealthy it is Hawkeye holds her life over Mustang like she did. But I don’t see it in the traditional sense. It’s all about flame alchemy. I’ve spoken about my SEVERE dislike of weapons that are too easy to use. And Mustang’s flame alchemy is frankly near the top of the list. He’s not burning off ANY steam using this weapon and it’ll eventually destroy him. I feel the same way about guns BECAUSE death is such a tremendous shockwave for so many. And the fact things like that can fall from consideration with such easy to use weapons is what terrifies me.
    There’s a reason so many consider THIS fight and not the finale fight to be the best in the series/franchise. There’s only one other non finale fight people consider but we’ll get to that later.
    Also the fact this is the same episode as “My shoulder is back” is insane. The fact they found a way to properly fit half an episode of what is essentially a comic relief battle at this point is amazing. For crying out loud, Olivier Armstrong just turned to her firing squad and said “You work for me now” and they LISTENED. That is just outstanding both in the urgency and the comedic value of “I’m here to kill you and- never mind lets fight monsters side by side.”

    I love Envy's character, probably the Homunculus/sin I relate to the most. As you said, acting hostile and masking yourself in a supposed superiority is very often just a cover for deep-seated fear and insecurity.
    The real evil in this show is Father, since he created the Homunculi specifically with those sins in mind, giving them essentially no choice but to become slaves of said sins. The only exception is Greed, but even his betrayal is motivated by his overbearing desire to own everything for himself.
