Well, Jordan Mailata on Philly was just resigned and was drafted in the 7th round, he did not play any football at all, Canadian or otherwise. You had 16 NFL Teams show up to Manu's pro day. The guy is 6' 7", 352 lbs. and runs a 5 second 40.... They are going to play him at RG next to Sewell, at worst he is a backup and succession plan for Zeitler, at best he is part of a dynamic right side that gives the Lions options if they have to move on from Decker. It was a smart move for the team, especially a team that does not only what is best for now, but also what is best for three years from now. This guy is a prospect with elite athletic traits, he can be a special player, the ceiling alone justifies the 3rd round pick if the Lions had conviction on him. Oh, BTW, dude played Rugby and basketball in his past as well, he is a hell of an athlete for Hank Fraley to mold! I can say that chances are there will not be a better round 3 prospect in next years draft class when the Lions would pick. Not for next year, nor the year after. And I don't have to be right on that, it just has to be plausible for the Lions to be justified, and that sure sounds plausible to me.
I would say arrogant was a harsh word but there is some validity to what this GM is saying. This move is eerily similar to us taking Brodric Martin last year which wasn't smart nor necessary. No other GM was going to take him in that round. Holmes continues to say that he was a hot commodity around that area and that simply isn't true. No other GM was taking him in that round. Brodric was going to be around much later in the daft. Brodric had a bad college career. High probability the same thing happens with Giovanni Manu, which would be disappointing especially because Holmes is pretty darn good at drafting. I believe Holmes is beginning to get ahead of himself slightly and I don't know why he's doing it. He makes multiple smart decisions by drafting players who produce in college and then in the 3rd round takes players who have zero tape or stats and then claims that the player was highly coveted by other teams even though that wasn't the case at all! He enjoys saying that so that the Detroit and National media don't jump down his throat. It is possible that other teams were interested but they definitely weren't taking Brodric Martin or Giovanni Manu in the 3rd round. 🤣😂 It is pretty comical when you think about it though because Holmes is great at drafting. He is so far ahead of the other GM's when it comes to drafting but he has these odd picks where he goes away from his philosophy (which has worked) and drafts a player high; who will probably never have a long term career in the NFL. These are players who may never even play or start a full season in the NFL. This is where the issue lies. All the players that Holmes has drafted that have done absolutely nothing (stat wise) or have been injury prone coming in have all been flops under Holmes. Martin, Onwuzurike and Manu (most likely). With Holmes track record, if he would've just stuck to his philosophy with these picks...they probably would be starters by now and not massive flops. By the way, I am a huge Lions fan. I know people aren't big on honest takes these days but I am a Lions fan LOL.
