    It never occurred to me that there were any VFX shots in this film. Subtle and well done!

      Same here, but good job. Fincher normally doesn’t use that much, CGI in his films I think. Or he does a mixture of practical, and visual.

      @@mariopuyat7582 Fincher actually uses CGI a lot, it's just for things you wouldn't expect to be CG.

    Fincher productions remain the best examples of subtle VFX. Must've been nice dealing with all the dark shadows to hide potential imperfections.

    00:03 So, because they were shooting in black&white, they used a white screen instead of a blue screen. Is that so, or it's a blue screen just looking like white in the black&white format?

    • @thefincheranalyst
      @thefincheranalyst 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      You are absolutely correct. They used native black&white sensor cameras so they couldn't use blue or green screens. In this case, they use white screens to have the contrast that allowed rotoscoping. In other cases, they used LED videowalls displaying images.

      @@thefincheranalyst That's a... strange decision. Why not film in color, then post-process to B/W just for the added flexibility?

    • @thatdesignerguy0
      @thatdesignerguy0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@solaris5303 It could be because the DP wanted to shoot and light the scenes so that they remain similar to the source material's dramatic lighting. It was shot on digital so they have all the flexibility they need.

    • @thefincheranalyst
      @thefincheranalyst 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@solaris5303 They thought of that, being able to key certain colors and adjust their individual tone, and use blue/green screens... And they tested the camera with the regular color sensor. But when they tested the one with the same 8K resolution but monochrome, they were blown away by its superior sharpness and quality in the tonal gradation of the greys. Because the effective resolution isn't split in three, with a Bayer filter, for the RGB colors. You just get a much richer black and white than desaturating a color image. No color filtering also makes the sensor much faster (more sensitive to light), and they needed that extra sensitivity because most of the time they were going to shoot with a closed down iris in the lenses (allowing less light in), for a higher depth of field, reflecting the deep-focus photography of "Citizen Kane".

Especially the animals, fireplace etc. I think they would have benefited from traditional matte paintings, more projections, real animals. But Fincher has made it clear that he prefers to be able to manipulate as much as possible in post so I guess that's the trade off he has to make.
